I really like the way you have done this video, instead of just telling people you can do it by hand you did half by hand and showed it's really possible. It puts things into perspective for people and makes your creation much more achievable

Andrew, let an old machinist suggest that you use longer, slower strokes to utilize the whole length of your hacksaw. Also, your files will last longer if you apply cutting pressure only on the forward stroke instead of scrubbing like sandpaper. Good looking ring, BTW!

+Dominic Yes, you can resharpen a dull file, to a certain extent, by immersing it in nitric or sulfuric acid for half an hour or up to overnight, depending on the strength of the acid. I've done this, and the file was improved, but still not quite good as new. It went dull again quickly and I bought a new one anyway.

Good video, nice editing with the music, very bold, not many people would be confident enough to play music for 2 seconds then talk, another few seconds of music & some fancy visuals of you turning the "ring" around followed by a few more seconds of music, top notch work sir.

I always cringe when I see a file being pushed and dragged. These files are meant to be pushed, lift up, pull back, push, lift up, pull back, push. Your files will last longer and you won't waste the effort. With that said, I like what you did and the production value is great.

A tip for grinding and polishing rings, get some small screwdrivers, and just friction fit the ring over the plastic handle, put the scewwdriver in your drill, and spin it while you sand or polish the ring.

We used to make those when out to see when I was in the Navy. We'd use stainless steel nuts that were supposed to be used on the piping in the nuclear propulsion plant of the ship. We'd only use a file and those nuts were hard so it took a long time... but we had nothing but time on our hands so it worked out.

for anybody wanting to make 1 of these. here are alternative plans. 1. simply drill out threads using a drill bit the same diameter of your finger 2. either takes the sides to a bandsaw to create the contours or simply use a handheld orbital or vibratory sander (you know. the one in your tool box you used for that drywall patch) lay it on its side and start sanding the contours in. it'll take about 3 minutes per side. 3. polish using a 8" buffing pad on your bench grinder

The nut will anneal better if you cool it down by covering it in sand. This slows the cooling down but will make the nut softer for working.

Great basic vid for newbie ring makers. IMHO it's better to make mistakes on a 50 cent bolt instead of a block of 18K chunk of gold. You may want to mask off some of the bright areas & wire brush other areas. Once you've textured w/ the brush, you may need to touch up the bright areas. This kicks up your designs a bit. You may also want to work w/ with Brass & Bronze nuts. The masking techniques can be used on those metals to create patinas. There are a number patina liquids on the market that can make your pieces awesome.

Hey man, great video. Good on you for using a mask too when grinding metal, the dust and particulates you can't see from that stuff are nasty. People don't usually stress enough how bad metal dust is for your lungs. Just a tip: I think you'll find that you get a much better usable life from your files if you only file in a "push" motion and clean them regularly (every 10-15 strokes) with a file card. Keep up the good work, man.

Great job! I'm sure you already noticed this, but you should set your camera to manual focus so every time you move something in the frame,it doesn't go out of focus. It takes a little more fiddling around and more time each time you change the shot, but in the end, it really makes a difference.

You can flip the inserts in your vise. Unscrew them and flip them over, the other side should be smooth. I use the smooth side most of the time. This should help with speeding up work as you will not need to protect your material as much.
@BachClarinet
@BachClarinet 2 года назад
Another suggestion: drill and ream? Find out what the major diameter of your thread is, then find a suitable sized drill, slightly smaller than your desired size (i.e. your finger width), then ream it to size. Drill press should do. Lots of lubricant.

You can use vinegar to remove galvanization in safe manner. Just drop the nut into vinegar and let it sit down. Depending on thickness of the galvanization this might take from 45minutes to several hours, but at least its clean and then just rinse it out with hot water and dry it up.

The nut would stay pretty clean and shiny whilst it's being worn I'd say. Stainless doesn't get stained, but does it stain other objects? Or does it work both ways?
@raymondo162
@raymondo162 8 лет назад
ss ss If the nut isn't stainless, the sweat from your hands will corrode it quite quickly. 'Stainless' is nothing to do with 'stains'.....!! Stainless steel is a steel alloy that won't corrode in water. Stainless steel is an alloy - a mix of metals, so the recipe for SS can be changed in many many ways. I'd suggest you Google or Wiki stainless steel - it's a big big subject. Good luck
