How To Make A Roll Up Door

This probably looks complex and expensive to do, but it's as easy as routing the right size groove and mounting some salvaged rollers. The grove needs to match the roller in width and depth and is located near the top of the side panels. Two rollers are fastened to the side edges of the door at the top so that they can turn freely. Two more rollers are mounted inside the cabinet just below the groove and the same thickness as the door away from the front.
I salvaged the rollers from a used set of low cost drawer slides and used regular flat head wood screws as axles and washers as spacers.

Thanks for the reminder on this John, I remember watching the cabinet build and thinking that was a useful feature. I have a bunch of roller skate bearings which I'm sure would be about the same size and could be used in the same way.
@IBuildIt
@IBuildIt 4 года назад
Problem with the skate bearings is the 8mm hole. Need to use something as a bushing or possibly a dowel as the axle. The hole in these rollers is small enough for a regular #8 wood screw.

That's awesome dude! I was contemplating ordering a $60 folding door drawer slide mechanism and seeing this makes me want to do this 100%. I'm going to use skateboard bearings instead, which should work (my door will probably be about .75 to 1 inch thick), will probably need to get a thicker screw and might even do a threaded insert.

John thanks for sharing 🙌🏽 Your computer cabinet looks great! Hope it’s been severing you well over the years. Been thinking of doing flip up retractable doors for kitchen cabinets, as probably going to renovate the whole small kitchen this winter.. I tore off the upper cupboard doors years ago as was fed up with them swinging in the way whenever needed something especially if working in the galley with others was just annoying! Now thinking flip up retractable doors give the same freedom yet can also close the doors to make things look calmer. Even if I try to keep things neat inside the cupboards, still be nice to have the tidier ascetic of closed door fronts to cupboards especially with what have in mind with new renovations. I had thought instead of acquiring a router to make the tracks. I could just from the negative space that could be created by adding on additional lumber pieces thou except obviously where the track would be it be that negative space- if makes sense writing it out-lol I live in an apartment, so try to keep noise down and I don’t have lots of storage for tools. So when I design a project, I bring a cut list with me to get done at the store when purchasing the whole lumber pieces. Sure I spent some time before on the design measurements/math thou makes it super easy to put together at home for me, with way less noise, mess or tools. I’ve been looking all types of videos & different hardware slides ect thou this idea is exactly what I had in mind… simple like barrister bookcase I’ve been admiring yet are costly pieces to find the antique stacking style that allow individual pieces to be removed which I would fit into kitchen. Probably more work than just making my own cupboards with this method of flip up retractable doors. It’s getting lengthy, as I’m so excited full of ideas lol My last thought to share was that since in a kitchen the cupboards are to be secured in place for weight… can’t simply once installed from behind remove the door, if ever needed to do so with the type of rollers you’re using. So my thought was I would use the spring loaded pin style that is used on closet doors. This way could press down on the roller pin to recess it to remove the door incase that was ever needed. Thought I would share this idea as if my train of thought makes sense written out, might also be helpful to someone else’s needed as it’s a slightly modification. As believe this is still more cost effective than buying other hardware or sliders, it’s just a recessed track that stops just before the end to stop door from coming out all the way, with some rollers to guide the door along to go up away open or down. Brilliant;) www.amazon.ca/Products-9-1137S-Bi-Fold-Replacement-Primeline/dp/B082FN5VQN/ref=asc_df_B082FN5VQN/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=579086997057&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3875117797728435731&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9001599&hvtargid=pla-907139466649&psc=1

Ah but what you don't realize is that the rollers are actually made of polypropylene, so they will only last about 2 million times. Clearly John hasn't thought this through and needs to scrap the entire project.

Thank you for using old reused hardware. I can't seem to find too many flipper door plans that don't use new hardware. Just making you buy more stuff. I wish you showed more detail that you did. But I think I have a better idea how to make a flipper door without buying all that extra stuff.

I’m thinking of a way to build a pull out spice rack for an upper cabinet, that will pivot to vertical, so spices will be facing out and can then be raised to level and put back in the cabinet. I appreciate any input you can offer me
@katiedotson704
@katiedotson704 11 месяцев назад
Not what you are requesting but have you considered drop down drawers? Great for spice racks as well as knife keepers, measuring spoons and a safe place for a scale if you use one in the kitchen. The also work great in the shop for screwdrivers, chisels, bits, and you-name-it. You can do a RU-vid search for drop down drawers and find a way to build them that suits you or at least leads you in the right direction.

Hi John! Wanted to say I'm a newbie woodworker and LOVE your content. You are frickin amazing! I'm considering this method for a flipper door on a project I'm starting soon. I'm concerned about the initial action just before the door gets pushed in. Without something to prevent it, wouldn't the door rack pretty easily at that point and potentially come off track? Once its at least a quarter of the way in I'm guessing the door keeps itself straight, but how could I prevent the initial racking, if there is any?
