Children’s Day is an annual holiday held throughout Japan that takes place on May 5th. Traditionally it was held on the 5th day of the 5th moon on the Chinese calendar, but with the adoption of the western calendar it began being celebrated on its current spring date. The holiday celebrates children and their individual characteristics. It usually comes at the tail end of the weeklong worker holiday known as Golden Week. Until 1948 it was known as Boy’s Day but was then changed to Children’s Day to be more inclusive.
To celebrate the Tango no Sekku, Samurai warrior helmets and armor are displayed in houses with boys. Helmets and armor are tools for samurai warriors to protect themselves. Helmets and armor represent the desire to protect boys from illness and accidents and grow strong.
It's cool to fold it with red and gold double-sided origami! If you fold it with a large piece of paper like newspaper, you can actually wear it.
