Film Riot focusing on a clear story, before overthinking visuals. Not that a short film has to have much of a “story” to it, but make sure the audience knows what’s going on through the pacing.

Feeding your cast and crew is the most underrated tip. My first short film, my co-producer (who had more experience) insisted we didn't need to feed people. I later found out she had to talk people out of walking out on me, and I don't know how much of that was because of me and how much was because they were hungry and tired and never got a lunch break. My second short I made sure to have all-you-can-eat snacks and meals and the vibe on set was awesome. Everyone was happy and getting along, and lunch breaks allowed cast and crew to talk and get to know each other better without the stress of working.

This, exactly. Especially if you’re the lead. It’s not every day you’re the lead of your own project (at least for me since I shot my film in a day). For sure treat your crew, since if you’re nonprofit, they’re there voluntarily being put through shit. I have some dope ass friends to be put through a 7 hour day out in the cold and rain. 40$ large supreme pizzas for everyone? Hell yeah, they deserve it.

It' honestly so sad to see that short movies dont get as much recognition as big movies. I personally feel like sometimes short movies can sometimes be way better than actual big movies. Judged by the cinematic photography, the actors, the editing, the story telling etc. Short movies deserve as much recognition as big movies.

I wanted to make a movie featuring a tornado scene. I made a test scene using miniatures and a fake background, but it inspired me to make a full movie featuring a similar clip. I decided on making a fake background with a smoke machine to create the funnel cloud. I then would use a fan to make the rotating cloud. I then put that on green screen background footage of miniature houses being blown apart with a reverse vacuum cleaner.

I love how open you are with your early work. Admitting that your villains don't quite look the part is super humbling to hear. My first short film was incredibly challenging for me and something that I feel a bit embarrassed about because I don't feel like I got it right. I cringe every time, but if I didn't do it, then I wouldn't have the wisdom to make the choices to avoid my previous mistakes. Great content, always love your work and advice 🙏

Either be the only character or use some kind of mix with toys (like legos) + green screen. If it’s a fan film (ex: star wars) maybe use archive footage from the original media

Yep. Me too. To combat that I taught myself stopmotion. Might wanna research it. There are good apps that you can use on your phone to make movies. I just use legos. You can make some super cool stuff!

During my first year of film school (about to start second), we were filming a documentary, and my friend picked me up at like 8AM, and we basically we worked all day (with light breaks) without eating, in the middle of the countryside with little to nowhere to eat and didn’t eat until like 6:30-7:00PM. It wasn’t overly torturous but I really don’t recommend it. Kinda why I’m looking into food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated to take on shoots.

Thanks! Really helpful! I am looking forward to make my short film based on A nightmare on Elm Street movie and I want to name it: The Elm Street Massacre. I will make it a private short movie(around 20-30 minutes) about me playing Freddy Krueger trying to chase and kill Louie(my real life brother) while he finds a weird street(Elm Street) and he doesn't know what is waiting for him there. And there will be some more secundary characters: like a policeman(my friend;he has the same age as me: 17; and my brother: 15) and a ..waitress from a nearby restaurant; near elm street? That will be my girlfriend! Edit: HA! JK! GET RECTD! JJKKKKKKK NO MOVIE!!! HAH!!!!

Just wrapped on a short film today. Got hired as the BTS camera but I impressed the director and DP so much I ended up running a B CAM the second and third day. This was also the first short I worked on that had a Hollywood actor as the main it was very fun and I’m glad our whole cast and crew meshed so well together

Me thinking about what I can do and what I have at my disposal. The one thing I don't have is people who can act (that I know of). Once I got to the part of the video about casting, I'm like "well, my friends might hate me". Lol. I mean, I do have a friend who is heavy into film making. He does more films on events and concerts so no one is acting in his videos but I'm sure he has contacts. lol. The one problem I have when I start is being to polite. I haven't started a big project yet because I just recently got a good camera. What I mean tho is I can tell that when I get a shot, I won't have the guts to say it's bad. I probably will say it was good even if I know it could be better. I need to be more transparent.

Giving it a day or two is THE best advice. I've lived with that as a rule unless it is absolutely not possible to do. It'll help you tackle problems quicker as well as realize something that felt like a big issue previously was mostly just dreamed up from your nit picking and viewing over and over hundreds of times.

Agree 100% on all parts except the vfx. If someone is interested in vfx or having vfx I think they should go for it. It likely won’t look good but that’s a useful skill new filmmakers should play with. If you’re more experienced or plan on showing your short to a large audience, then I definitely wouldnt go for it. I know from experience of showing my first attempt at green screen in a film festival 😬😂 Great video regardless!

Five years ago I so wanted to be in cinematography, failed to find proper teachers😕. Riotes didn't teach anything, ended up in finance. Been doing a lot of macro economic models and statistical graphs for quantitative analysis. Today I missed the creative field, I still can't find introductory course for a Noob 😢

Hey Ryan been following you for a long time but I need some advice. Can you make an episode on how to CGI someone in. We shot our actress from the middle of our short and the ending of the film but her Parkinson's got worse so she couldn't continue and there's a key scene her laying on the table between those scenes. Can you give some tips on how can I get her in that space on the table? Oh and an actor passes in front of her on the table.
