Sian says: "The answer to this is a bit subjective (sorry!) You'd need to take into consideration the shrinkage % of the silver clay paste you are using and the end thickness and weight of the pieces you'd like to create. Another important factor to consider is if the clay is fine silver or sterling silver as fine silver is much softer than sterling and would bend easier than the same piece made in sterling silver. Generally 3-4 thick layers of silver paste especially if you are adding findings, sometimes it's better to work with a thinner paste to get a smoother finish and build the layers up 6-8. It is really helpful if you can to try out a sample piece first and make a note of how much silver you use (perhaps by weighing it) and how durable the piece is for what you want. Keeping a record would mean you could refer back when you make more pieces."
