Cool man glad to here. Yeah an old time cabinet maker showed me this and taught it to me like this is the right way to do it and everyone does it this way but I don’t see to many people using it. Glad to hear you got something out of it. If you got time watch the Japanese toolbox video. I use this technique there too.
@@MaysWoodworking It is one of those things where once you see it done, you have that "Why didn't I think of doing it that way?!" moment. I don't use a lot of dowels because I'm not great with precision and trying to get everything lined up has historically been a problem. Your method solves that issue and pretty much everything I make is utilitarian so exposed dowels are not a problem. I liked and sub'd and I will check out the rest of your content when I have a minute.
Thanks man appreciate it. One of my favorite things about it is you don’t have to clamp it. And you aren’t stuck with screws which I just think look ugly. Make sure you use a good drill bit like a bradpoint or just a sharpe one so you don’t get tear out. Any way man Make some dust.
i noticed you screwed each side alternate rather than opposite - i dont know if that makes sense - ie so that each side has one set of screws / dowels rather than two / which would leave two sides with any screws / dowels ... does that improve strength? im not interested in how it looks - i need boxes like this for records which will be stacked perhaps four boxes high - so i need strong individual and weight stacked cabinets any advice would be appreciated i'm a total amateur tbh - was useless at woodwork - and have made cabinets that needed metal brackets and other botched requirements ... plus i want to do this on the cheap
Don't take this the wrong way but shaving things down multiple times rather than just accurately measuring and cutting is slightly bonkers but the dowel thing is interesting
I’m three years late, but I’m in. What happened next with this box? Did you make it into that gift, or start a new one? I definitely wanna see the hinge, clasp, and finish stages. going to look for the sequel now! 😎
