Making the mold of the original metal hatch lock mounting point and then making a fiberglass part out of that mold. This wasn't meant to be a teaching video but if you can learn something from this good for you. I just added some subtitles to explain what I'm working on currently.
By the way check out ru-vid.com for more in-depth awesome fiberglass videos. He really knows what he's doing.

Thank you for actually making steps obvious for people who have never worked with fiberglass before. I was looking up tutorials for working with molds to hopefully make a pair of hooves for a costume, and the ones that I had seen were going about without much instruction or detail. :)

Easy to understand and straightforward. Your work looks good! Thanks for the video. I needed a good quick video to send my brother because we live about 600 miles apart. This was perfect.

Cool video. Learned some good tips. I want to make a fiberglass bow for an inflatable boat. How many layers of fiberglass do you think I would need? What material could I use to make a mould for it? Thank you!

So I have a question... I'm trying to make fender flares for my car out of fiberglass, but the shape is really round. I'm thinking of using expanding foam and then shaping the foam the way that I want, then use body filler to smooth out imperfections, then primer it (gel coat??), wax, then layer the fiberglass over that... My question is is that a good process or what am I missing? I want to be able to reproduce them, so would I use the fiber glass as a mold or the foam shape as a mold? Thank you

i have been working over FRP pipes and tanks for installation n repair, after watching this video my work seems relatively easier. :)thanks for video and as others said for some details n gel n final products seem ok both ways. any idea how to calculte the strength of part in case using as structural element?

Hello professional, how many ml of hardener for every 200ml of resin? And what about cobalt, don't you add it to the mix? And on what ratio?

I made a mold for car door panel handles but when I casted the product in it it got stuck so badly in it I had to broke the mold unwillingly Off course I applied the release wax b/w them -what you were thinking

I've seen other videos that say you can use the resin without any hardner so you can have more time to shape your mold

In the UK it is now winter and I have a camper van roof to repair, do you recommend 15 centigrade for fibre glassing or very near 15.
@BIGMONSTERBLOCK
@BIGMONSTERBLOCK 9 лет назад
Hi Norman, it's possible for resin to harden even in temperatures as low as 10 centigrade. The hardening process will just take longer. You can speed it up a little by using 3% hardener instead of just 2%. For best results I still recommend temperatures between 15 and 20 centigrades.
@Great0ne2012

Just mix the resin hotter. by using more catalyst.

Nice vid, would have cut the glass in the final part in overlapping strips, instead of all small sections, it will make your part much stronger because the seams won't be on the same place for every layer. Maybe this part doesn't have to handle bigger loads??
@MatthieuLibeert
@MatthieuLibeert 10 лет назад
would be better to use a gelcoat, saving you time filling the little pinholes and sanding after demoulding... why not adding the finished product at the end of the video?
@BIGMONSTERBLOCK
@BIGMONSTERBLOCK 10 лет назад
Yes, gelcoat is definitely the way to go. Though sanding such a small part with that soft filler was very fast too. Definitely do things thoroughly with gelcoat if it's a large part or something that's gonna show. Mine is just hidden inside the trunk so didn't care too much. Just wanted to get a decent placeholder for my lock. There's no finished product shown because next morning I just grabbed my little mold and headed to another garage where my car is at and continued working there. Gonna do better videos in the future with gelcoat and finished products guaranteed. Like everyone these days, I'm just so damn busy.

Rollering the resin out, does this compact it and make it stronger.
@BIGMONSTERBLOCK
@BIGMONSTERBLOCK 9 лет назад
Rolling the resin out will indeed compact it. It will also be stronger because strength of the laminate isn't so much in the resin but in the fiberglass mat and excess resin will just make your laminate more brittle.

@MindDezign

My suggestion is to actually pull the mat, apart, into strands that will readily conform to sharp curves as you have here in the shut edge ,(Where you notice the roller is just pushing resin under air trapped mat. A manual ,human,chopper gun ,effect.The resin will still bind the glass strongly but it will confirm alot faster. Another point,always strive to make molds that are in sections. Even a simple Box mold like this, Should be build with the idea of ,dis assembling,the mold from the part. Instead of trying to pop ,or pry a part from the mold. Just takes one more step in design,to make parts that will ,more easily,removed with less harm of fatque . It takes alot of time to make "any video" I applaud your efforts.

Great video BIGMONSTERBLOCK I have bee making some jobs with glass fiber but i got a lot of tips, my level is very low but i will like to get some tips about cleaning the tools like the roll how you clean it and what you use to clean it I used som thinner to be able to use again the brush again but i am living in Norway and every thing is so expensive any tips ? I don't want to contaminate more than necessary ;-) I am planing to make a copy of a bumper i want to reproduce and i will like to test different materials like epoxy or plastic if i can get some think more flexible than glass fiber but that still strong enough to make a bumper thanks in advance Cheerse Clandestino

Personally, I appreciated the video. If everybody is so good, why are they bothering to watch 'how to' videos anyway? I did have some concerns, mainly I had to keep stopping and backing up to see the written explanations because they weren't up long enough to read. I was confused by why you filled the indents with wall filler, since I assumed you were trying to duplicate the original??? (But I've used plaster of Paris for filler myself, and it was reassuring to see that somebody who apparently knows what they are doing does something like that. Your video answered my main questions, mainly about laying up without using Gelcoat...thanks. (Oh yeah, I turned the sound off. :) )

I wouldn't use these guys for that. it seems to me that you don't have alot of experience in building molds. you've made this so much harder than it needed to be. although some of the basics are covered in this video, I would suggest people look elsewhere for proper mold building tutorials.
@dentalmanuk
@dentalmanuk 8 лет назад
rolling out resin seems ok but even if its not still it is good coz E glass is brittle and more resin would increas its toughness which is less in case of less resin to glass ratio. in case of repairing the parts it seems appropriate to roll out resin for better chemical bonding plus mechanical also on surface profile achieved by sanding. but as i said its a good video anyway
