Agree, here in the U.K. we don’t have harbour freight and we don’t have garages the same size in US so we’re in a back foot to start with. I’m discovering these problems trying to make a luthiers workbench

If you think you can't build the same things they do, but with basic hand tools, you are an idiot. The only difference is that it takes longer. $500 thickness Planer = $ 50 Wood Plane off ebay $2000 Jointer = $50 wood plane off ebay $1000 Table saw = $20 hand saw $150 Router (because anything you buy for less is probably garbage) = $150 chisel set new or maybe more for vintage off of ebay (UK made Marples or US made vintage Stanley). A Drill. corded or cordless doesn't matter. As with anything, you buy cheap, you get cheap. While you can get a chisel set for under $20 brand new, it's going to be garbage that you will need to sharpen constantly because of the cheap chinese crap it's made out of. You will also need a good sharpening stone set and a good quality square. The funny thing is, the good wood workers with all the expensive power tools still have these hand tools too, because there are still things you simply cannot do easily with a standard power tool.

@@MAGAMAN At first it looked like yet another comment by an American who can find A-10 Warthogs and Wärtsilä RT-flex96C container ship engines for $0.05 on e-bay and has enough extra garage space to store them . Lol. Yeah, beginners should learn fundamentals with time-tested hand tools. It's not worth losing fingers on a jointer or a table saw before they even learn to make their first simple box

Just made one of these to kill time on a very slow saturday. took less than 2 hours and I have an entire day to go! Edit: for folks making this using imperial units, approximate measurements as I used, are as follows: seat: 11.5" x 20" center support: 7" x 20" legs: 11.5" x 11.5" My board had cupped and subsequently began to split the legs when I was working on it, so I glued scrap pieces across the legs and clamped them down. works just fine.

You can certainly do good work with limited tools keep making furniture and your skills will improve fast. keep it within your capabilities as you improve try the next skill, time is important, decide on your daily rate and price work by daily rate plus materials and then add any relevant taxes that may exist . Make a plan for each project just a sketch understand how you will carry it out before you start working have to go good luck

One of the changes I made to make it easier for me to make is, instead of doing all the cutting on the support brace, I cut it straight and added on blocks to hold the seat. To add strength to these blocks I glued and dowel pin them in place. Thank you, I enjoy your videos stay healthy and have a great day.

Great detailed step by step. Could you provide any more insight to how you evaluate proportions during manufacturing? Is it just from experience or any general guidelines (except from knowing how existing furniture looks of course). Not always easy to picture the end result when you're standing there with separate pieces.

I just subscribed today, seen almost all of your videos, they are awesome and you are a great teacher. I just got into wood working and have so far built a raised bed and a work bench, but only used screws, could you possibly do a video on when to use nails and when to use screws?

Hi Ceven ,Thank you. I will try to address your question in a video ,in short though screws have superior holding capabilities especially when used with pilot holes .nails can hold well when hammered in at opposing angles, there’s more to it than that I guess a video is indeed in order!!! Btw is your name Welsh? Happy Woodworking David

Hallo David. Would you suggest making an angled cut on the bottoms of the legs to make them coplanar (apologies if this is the wrong word) to the floor? Would such a modification make a difference? Thank you.
@RusticDavid
@RusticDavid 7 месяцев назад
Hi if you cut the bottom of the legs level with the floor it will be an improvement just remember to bevel the corners to prevent bottom of legs from getting chipped .Have a great weekend David

Amazing design, will definitely do it! Would you recommend this design for a higher bar stool? What do you reckon?
@RusticDavid
@RusticDavid 3 года назад
Hi I wouldn’t recommend making this tall there would be a lot of leverage by the legs causing the joint to fail even with , 2”hard wood I would go no taller than30 cm Best wishes David

I'm just here looking for the comments that say "That's easy if you have $10,000 worth of tools" that always seem to pop up on the woodworking channels.

Hello Dave, love the videos, I was wondering if you know anywhere I could take a beginners course in North Wales on carpentry so I could one day be like you. Thanks from Maltese Patrick.

Hi David, I just finished cutting out all except for the top and have made my cuts in the stretcher slightly oversized and the legs are a little loose, do you have any recommendations for that or should I just remake the stretcher, thanks
@RusticDavid
@RusticDavid 2 года назад
Hi if the legs are loose you can add 2 wedges for each leg , 1 wedge from the left 1 from the right as you squeeze them together they will tighten up the legs Hope that helps good luck Happy Woodworking David
