Brad point dowel bit 1/4 inch or Forstner bits
High speed drill set-small drills for screw pilots and 5/16 Inch drill bit for clearing the shaft of the T-nut.
Nail set or big nail for marking drill holes.
Spade bit, 3/4 inch to inset the flange of the tee nut.
4 inch belt sander (optional)
Sandpaper, 80 grit and 240 Grit
Circular saw with a plywood cutting blade

Also, if you don’t have a saw- Home Depot and a lot of wood shops will cut the wood for you. I’m glad you posted this! I get questions on my channel constantly about where I “bought” my sketch easel and I explain it is a “Gurney easel” and send them to your blog. I always try to avoid explaining how because I assumed that is proprietary to your tutorial you were selling. Thanks for this, James! :)

Furious Sterling hi! Shoot me an email- jared.cullum@gmail.com or through my channel. You’ll still need a drill to attach your hinges but I can cut the wood for you. If Home Depot is near you they cut wood for you too. Let me know what I can do for you!

One of your practices I really appreciate is your considerate, detailed, thorough listings and descriptions. In so many ways you're a model to us all. My wife is tired of me talking about how good you are and I think she is vigorously supporting me to go outside and paint.

If any students on here don’t have access to tools or history/friends with tools I’d be more than happy to cut the wood for you and ship it if you send me some scratch for shipping. Wood is pretty cheap. I have a compound miter that can snip it real fast and I wouldn’t want students to be held back by lack of access or tools. Granted everyone should own a drill and a saw at some point in their life ;)

I would seriously consider using SUGRU to bond these components together instead of drilling and metal hardware. It worked for me beautifully. I just had to wait for it to bond.

Where do I get the adjustable torque hinges and the quick release plates? I love his set up. I'm tried of bringing my oils supply for plein air painting.

Very cool project! That 1/4" bit is a brad point bit--not a forstner--but either should work fine for this project!

I've been using the Velbon 444 and the Amazon Basics tripod, both of which use the square quick release mount.

Medium should be big enough unless your easel is 11 x 14 or bigger.

question do you really need three torque hinges or can you use two?

Yeah, I know...they're expensive. If you don't build the gripper on top you can skip that third hinge.

Foerstner bits will need to be ordered online. Most stores no longer sell them.

I found Forstner bits at Home Depot in Sept. 2017.

C0raBr0wn I did not check that store because I did not live near it. I checked Lowes, Marvin's, and Ace hadware which all told me that nobody made these type bits anymore. It's good that you were able to find them.

actually a poor design. these hinges are not made to use this way,,,, one must cut a chunk out of the hinges (weaken) to get the contraption to reduce the 3-4 inch inch gap when closed. He is an incredible artist however $15 for a poor design and $20 for the two misused hinges is not so good.

That Gorilla glue is almost as good as any PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate - white glue) glue - it just costs a lot more and is more difficult to work with. The real shame is that you charge people to watch an hour long video for such a simple project. I suppose, though, that if you were a real artist with any talent you'd stop ripping off your fans and make liviing from selling your "art". Ya'll know what they say - those who do - do, and those who can't - teach. 😡
