Using screws on end grain is not a good option. Screws need to cross grain in order to hold securely. Better to use nails if possible or have inserts in your wood to which screws can grip properly.

awesome tutorial, where do you get the canvas rolls from ?
@Leon7Professional

I learned two new techniques from you that are invaluable. I thought I new everything about building a canvas from scratch for years, but I never actually thought of just cutting the wood at angle and adding an additional piece to make a corner-round.....I was nailing in corner rounds which is way inferior to what you just displayed. Your gridding in the back is interesting, because if I don't feel making a halflap cut on a larger piece, I can do just what you did and make smaller pieces and move up the center piece. Very good tutorial.

at some point you should be measuring that the diagonals are equal to insure that it is square before all these pieces are glued and screwed, perhaps making marks on the table to keep it square while working.

Would you do all of this same stuff with the wood parts if you were making a canvas half that size? If not, I'd like to make a video request to you because all the other canvas-making videos I've seen don't have nearly the same quality in structure and tension that yours has. Thank you for making this video, by the way!

Nicely built. The only thing I do differently is at the corners. I fold the canvas under so that no diagonal layer is visible, also no extra staples on the sides are required.
@roslynsavage836
@roslynsavage836 5 лет назад
Hate the break this to you, but do you see that little nub on your huge pliers? They rest against the wood/frame so you are using the tool, and not your arms to actually stretch the canvas. The way you are doing it, you are depending on your arm strength, and that will give you an uneven stretch. Also, use too many staples will overstretch your canvas and might eventually warp the frame. Staples should be tacked on from the thumb to pinky length apart. I paint very large and have never had a painting warp.

beutiful done! I would like to get hold on bigger canvases, also using the linen i prefer. really inspiring! a question, maybe a little late. do you not need to ree-stretch the canvas later? been impressed by this kind of custom frames but in my head, as you paint on it you will stretch the canvas a little. making it loose when your done. an easy reply to this comment could be “no”. haha. thanks for the inspiration.

I would have done that too, until he had timbers pulled into the corners with square ends.........that took care of that step. I more than likely still would have done a diagonal measure jsut for good measure :D.

Tip: Spend $60-80 and invest in a small air compressor and framing nail gun, preferably 18 gauge brad nailer, to make the joining process a breeze. I've been making canvases for years and it makes these processes a lot less work.

I’m surprised the screw didn’t split the centre aisles when u screwed it. Isn’t it safer to predrill a hole in that before screwing it in?

I've had better experience going corner inward than center outward, it's a shame so few seem to know about it. Google 'canvas preparation information sheets - just paint ' and you should find 7 very useful guides which explain the process.

@hughdismuke4703

Working from one center with three staples, going to the opposite end and stretching that center with three more staples. Now do the same process on each of the sides of the frame. Now start over again with the first side you started and put three more staples. Now go to the opposite side again, stretch and do the same thing. Now do the sides again. Do it all in the same order, working left and right, left and right, back and fort, back and forth as you work each side. The goal is to force the lack of the canvas into the corners evenly. It helps keep the canvas absolutely the same flat on all areas. I do like the way he made the frame. It's tough making perfect corners when it's just straight two flat ends connecting together. Good technique. Would be good also to check it with a corner square.
@runway12
@runway12 4 года назад
Wow, your video makes the process look so E-Z ... haha. To ensure my frames are square ... I use a square - I couldn't believe that you would just trust that your frame would com together squarely - because I use hand tools, regardless of how careful I am with my cutting - I still end up having to use a square - I got a " monster sized " metal one - the biggest I could find because I love huge frames. I always use framing brackets and gluing. I don't bevel the lumber. I don't do those support thingies on the ends. Building a frame actually takes up more of my time than the actual painting does - which is why I (when I can afford it) I buy professionally made frames like the one you've made here. This vid is loaded with useful info. for anyone who wants to take the plunge into building their own frames. The DIY feelings can be very rewarding. Thanks for sharing ....

Hi, excellent video demo. I need to know what you suggest to have the canvas not run over the edge with the image. They are with a black border. I do not want the image to be cut off or wrap around but show the edge accurately. The quality of one company I am using is good but they still tell me the accuracy is very difficult. I wonder if I should send them a file with a ¼" black border to the size required so that when they add the black border the stretching will pull up to the actual edge of the images. Will

Hello, thank you for the clear informative valuable video that you’ve made. I’m new to woodwork. *** Enquiries *** [1] Where to buy an accurate mitre box (timber- / plastic-type) or an accurate manual mitre saw (in Penang, Malaysia / at online websites that offer shipping to Penang, Malaysia)? # A few of hardware stores nearby my house do not sell mitre boxes. I have a backsaw only --- Characteristics of the backsaw:- Type: Gent’s saw (a.k.a. Gentleman’s saw) Length of the blade: 9.8 inches / 25 cm Width of the blade: 1.7 inches / 4.3 cm Thickness of the blade: less than 1 mm Made in: Germany [2] What type of hand plane (type, brand, size, …) would you recommend to make the bevel? [3] Do I have to sand a little bit on the slanting surface after the wood cutting by using backsaw (together with mitre box or so) before joint assembling? Or use a hand plane instead? Thank you very much.

yeah they would make it much easier, but would be way more expensive. He is in Australia and the cost for the wood used, would have only been about $30 tops. Pre-made stretcher bars would be a lot more than that for that size.
