Hey! Just a quick note, while laundry sheets are good for the environment in some ways (easier to transport because of no water therefore less pollution ect) they can have the downfall of producing microplastics when used! I noticed your dryer vent tube is a little long. You might want to trim it so there are no big bends where lint will accumulate. A straight shot is the most efficient way to vent and the clothes will actually dry faster too.

@Val-rv3rq
@Val-rv3rq Год назад
It would also have been great to see Graham or you use the vacuum to clean out the dryer vent tube during this renovation, as it is so hard to reach and is a common cause of house fires. They also make a special tool for you to push down below the filter to get some lint out of there, s well. You could have used it and made room for it on the shelves. Your videos often cover safety issues; I wish you'd done it here. Everything is lovely, but safety comes first!

They make a long plastic or wood wand that you can attach to the end bracket so that your hands are not touching the drape fabric each time your opening/closing them .. also helps to keep the white drapes clean.. the drape is a bit sheer, maybe add drapery liner to the back so that you don’t see the appliances behind..

I’ll put my two cents in re the laundry lint ~ I used to keep a clear plastic produce bag hanging on a cup hook. When full, I tied off the top and put it in the outdoor garbage. Now I use the smallest white solid plastic bathroom garbage can I could find (I found the size I wanted at Walmart) and I line it with the same produce bags I used to use. It sits on the floor next to the dryer. The opening is larger so it’s much easier for me to drop and toss instead of wrestling open the twisted shut bag. 🦋

@@TamarLitvot Especially if you have ADHD, it's really important to make it as easy as possible to do something appropriate with the lint. So despite the outside garbage being literally right outside the door to the laundry-entryway - opening that door is too much of a barrier. So I guess I'm going to get myself a weird lint basket because right now I'm just leaving it on top of the dryer until my housekeeper comes and throws it out.

I have a ‘lint bin’ in my laundry closet- not a basket, just a small bin that hangs on the wall near my dryer. I empty the lint tray each time I use the dryer and stick it in there. Sometimes that is discarded, but I save a good portion for the Spring. I put lint and yarn scraps in a wire box outside for birds to use for nesting material. People use lint for dif things, but consider this: if your clothes have polyester or lycra in them, poly is made from plastic which is made from petroleum and lycra is made from rubber. If you burn these, noxious gasses release into the air. Just a thought. Cotton and linen are fine to use, they are natural and burnable. Wash them separately and save that lint. Also, lint left in the dryer vent can cause a fire, always clean it out each load and even vacuum the vent run with a hose periodically. Also growing up with an appliance builder, it was drilled into us that big appliances need some air circulation around them, do not crowd them or put things too packed around them. They have motors and motors can get hot 🔥. Just a little air and room around them. Just a thought. The laundry closet looks fab.

I immediately trash the lint, although I’ve wanted to put it in a wire basket outside for the birds to take for nesting (I haven’t yet for fear my neighbors will think me too weird 🤪) Really love the way this turned out - the fresh look from new paint (and I salute you for thoroughly cleaning everything first), the pretty scalloped edges on the shelves, everything put back in decorative containers, and enclosed in a crisp white curtain. Brilliant!! I would love to do laundry there too. Thanks for taking us along!

unfortunately lint is no good for wild birds, the fibers are extremely sort so it doesn’t have structure and it falls apart when wet so it’s not a good lining material either.
@janetwalker3541
@janetwalker3541 Год назад
Sylvia it's funny that you say the birds won't use lint for their nests cause guess what? They built nests in our dryer vent at the back of our condo. They pulled the mesh covering off it and built their nest there. The condo board won't replace the cover, so we gently removed the birds nest and replaced the cover with a new securer one ourselves.
@Pandamomentum
@Pandamomentum Год назад
@@janetwalker3541 I didn't say they won't use it, I said it's not good nesting material. I think we agree that a dryer vent is not an appropriate place for a bird to nest, but they don't know that, since dryer vents, like dryer lint, don't occur in nature. Just like you removed those birds and secured your vent to keep them safe, we should not put out a poor nesting material such as lint.

Seeing Alexandra struggling with the laundry detergent jug confirms yet again how much more convenient laundry detergent sheets are. A cardboard box of sheets for almost a hundred loads takes up less space than a DVD case and weighs much the same. There are at least two Canadian brands that are also vegan (uses no animal ingredients) and cruelty free (not tested on animals). They're also plastic free like her deodorant. The brand I use cleans great too! I'm never going back. Though for Alexandra to switch would mean SO MUCH empty space on those shelves! Storage for outdoor furniture covers? BTW, I'm on Team Toss the Lint Every Time. Who needs the clutter?
@TamarLitvot

I want to look into those. I use a good, non-polluting and no-fragrance detergent, but there are still the plastic bottles. Do the sheets totally dissolve in the wash -- and do they work as well with cold water as warm? I wash most of my clothes in cold water.

ITS AMAZING HOW MUCH STORAGE YOU GOT AND HOT AWESOME IT LOOKS, when i did my laundry area i built a counter that completely covered the washer and dry, it was such a game changer no more lost items falling behind, and i did loads (no pun intended) of shelves above so much storage) mine is a side by side in a closet as well and i took door off and use curtain

Hear me out here... Build a folding table that attaches to the banister hand rail via a channel that drops over it. The table top attaches with a piano hinge to the channel. The table top folds down towards the spindles with the two table legs folding up under the tabletop (use locking hardware). Line the channel that goes over the railing with leather to protect the banister. Now you have a fold away folding table! PS - I have a garbage can just for lint disposal and a small brush to really clean the screen. In the US that flexible dryer hose is not recommended for use due to the amount of lint that builds up in the little folds. Dryers cause a large percentage of home fires. The laundry closet is really cute - and those waves totally made it!

Also, it is my understanding that the dryer sheets also cause some of the dryer fires - don't keep reusing them

We clean the deywr lint container and immediately put the lint in the trash can. Lint is very combustible and not a good idea to store next to a dryer or closed area. When re-doing an area, if someone doesn't first clean, patch up the area, and prep it, I'd wonder about their experience, integrity, and true understanding of remolding. Also, this would have been a great opportunity to clean out the backs of the washer and dryer, and dryer vents and tubing. When it comes to built-in shelves, I always make the shelves adjustable as time changes things, and adjustable shelves can be moved. Also, shelves that have a drawers that can roll out really helps especially for when the shelf is deep. Cute Curtain rod and good that it leans out some. Glad to see the Curtain is just a little off the ground that way, it doesn't turn into a potential step on and trip on situation. Best to wash the curtain and give it a good ironing. That way, it looks fresh and crisp. Putting a shelf in when the washer and dryer is out is safer for the Employee. It also shows thoughtfulness on Management's side. I'm surprised no one has been hurt as in every video there seems to be an awkward or unnecessary challenging situation for an employee.

Ok cleaning lint out right away is normal but when we did a project for an animal shelter we would collect lint to stuff the dog and cat beds along with off cut scrap fabric. Technically it’s all just fibre. Also I know some shelters would take it for filling for baby animals. Lint can be sustainable

What an improvement! The wavy edges for the shelves were definitely worth Graham’s time! They really upped the glamor of this utilitarian work space, making laundry cleaning a bit more pleasant. Because you have much deeper storage shelves, I recommend storing refills behind the same products. For example, take that large bottle of more detergent off the top shelf and put it behind your drink dispenser of detergent. Then you might be able to fit your neatly folded outdoor furniture covers in bins up above. Or on the floor under the first pretty shelf. Just an idea. Finally love the curtain!

I have a lint bin that literally says, "Lint Bin" on the front of it. It came with a magnet attached, and it sticks to the front of my dryer. It could go on the side of someone's dryer, if they prefer. I clean my lint catcher every time I use the dryer, but I don't run to the trash can every time. I just empty the bin on the dryer from time to time. It is a time saver. Some people use the clean lint to stuff throw pillows and other things, too. Your lint basket is bigger than any I've ever seen, but hey, whatever works for you. Everything looks great, too.

BTW ... The question of "where do I put the patio furniture covers"? 1. Fold them so they are compact and all one size. 2. Find a tub with those flip-up locks on all four sides 3. Tie a tag, on a LONG string, to one of the flip locks, put the covers inside, and Lock The Box! 4. Slide the box onto the top shelf, as far back as possible. Bring the tag forward, so it dangles off the front of the shelf and reminds you where they are. Et Voila!

Since this is sponsored by a plastic free product, you might want to use Dropps laundry detergent / softener / oxi boost pods. The pods are more aesthetic too -- no big plastic bottle(s) to look at or try to lift. And no mix of different types of bottles for laundry, softener, and bleach. Just pods in cardboard boxes that will be way easier to style on a regular basis - no liquid or plastic bottle mess. I love, love, love Dropps. I now use their dishwashing detergent & spray too. I totally recommend their products.

I’ve seen a RU-vid hack ( sorry I can’t find the link) for catching the drips from detergent spigots. Take an old plastic bottle that is a bit wider than your detergent cup. Cut around the front and both sides of the bottom (leaving a rim to contain your detergent cup). At the back of this bottle cut a long tab, tall enough to fit from just above the spigot to below the detergent bottle (allowing space for your cup to sit in the rim). In the tab, cut a hole to fit around the spigot. Now the hack fits over the spigot, hangs down below the bottom of the detergent container and the measuring cup sits in the rim to catch any drips. (You’ve created sort of a short handle ladle.)
