How to Make a Vintage Inspired Vanity Table! 

I'm really loving these 1950's house Reno videos, Sage! Like you, I really don't like the style of homes today and these personal touches in a home make it feel so much warmer to me. I look forward to the next one!

Ooh, this takes me back to when I was a little girl. I loved my little vanity table with the skirt. Mine was white with a sky blue skirt and white polkadots, finished with 3 rows of yellow rickrack. My favourite colours. It was one of the first things my grandmother taught me to sew because it was all straight sewing. I was about 6 when I made it. I had forgotten all about it! I'm bingeing the last year of your uploads (many repeats :) ) as they make me happy. It is a trip down memory lane for me.💗

I think this is your most successful project to date! Not only did it turn out well, but it’s a fantastic idea to “upcycle” an old hall table into a vanity. I never would have thought of that! When I saw you struggling with the mirror height, I had several ideas: Add wood trim to the bottom to raise the mirror up higher, lower the height of the chair (which I don’t think is possible since it’s metal) - or (possibly easiest) raise the height of the entire vanity by adding a 2” knob to the bottom of each leg. All it would take is to drill a small pilot hole into each leg so you can screw in a knob for each. Of course you may wish to adjust the hem of your table skirt if you choose to do this. If the table top water marks are troubling you, you could purchase a piece of heavy, clear plastic from the fabric store and cut it to the shape of the vanity top. Then you could add a piece of fabric, lace, pretty paper, or anything you like and sandwich it between the plastic and the table. As a bonus, it’s water-proof so it will help preserve the quality of the wood top - and is super-easy to wipe down. I did this for a painted desk I owned, and it worked out very well! Regardless, I think it turned out brilliantly and looks lovely the way it is!

One of my favorites is from the “I Love Lucy” comedy that she had in her and Ricky’s bedroom. Lots of ribbons and lace with layers of veil fabric. How beautifully yours turned out to be! So feminine. Who wouldn’t love sitting there brushing her hair 100 strokes or applying lipstick? Some vintage perfume bottles would look fabulous too! Cute project! Thank you for being back!!!

Love your new dressing table! Idk if you can get it in Australia, but Formby's wood conditioner would be an easy way to recondition the top of your table without having to go to all of the trouble of refinishing it. Also, you can use cheap white toothpaste to remove water stains from wood. It works. I have a bread box my dad made for me. He has passed and it makes this bread box even more precious. I discovered too late that something wet had been left on the top of it. I really quick looked up what to do and decided to try the tooth paste. I was amazed, but it worked!

Ah you did such a beautiful job on your vanity table... Even the original owner would of been thrilled to see it. My late Mother sat at her dressing table every single morning and did her hair and make up. It one of my sweetest childhood memories with her. ❤️

Then my wonderful husband found a 2nd hand table from someone selling their antique vanity who lived in Hollywood, CA. He paid $85 dollars American and for a young married couple, that was a lot of money. Every time I sit at it, my mind wanders and I imagine any number of famous actresses from the 1940’s who may have owned it. So fun! Anyway, thanks so much for your videos. A lovely dressing table! I did something similar with mine, as the vintage ones available are all way too big - hall tables are the way to go if you lack the space.

I love the fabric you chose, and placing it in front of a large window is so helpful, because it's best to do your make-up by natural light. It's so lovely, the chair, everything. I put an old mirror in front of mine upstand mirror, to put the hand mirror ect on. I love the reflection of the items .also put all makeup and such on crystal plates and dishes. All from the charity store. It looks so glamorous ! Makes it easy for dusting.....

My Nana would always have a lace doily ( lace covering) on top of her vanity or beside tables. It might suit yours too. I have a vanity, waiting for a larger home , from the 1950s also. It has that old very light green tinted stain with a skinny dresser and bedside table to match. I can't wait to actually have an extra room for them. Great job on your new setup💗.

First, welcome back Sage!! It’s so nice to see you and hear your sweet voice. May I just say your hair looks so lovely in this video!!! The table you bought was made the year I was born. Vanity turned out so nice and that mirror was perfect. Impressed with how you did the curtain so that the drawer could still be opened and closed! I love textiles especially vintage so I would probably use a dresser or vanity embroidered linen to place on top of the vanity. Would also hide water marks etc. I’m sure you could find one at a second hand, thrift or antique store. ☺️

So nice, you picked the perfect material. I use to have one of those big old wooden vanities with the huge mirror. I never sat down to it much but used the storage and mirror all the time.

I have a actual vanity that I adore because it fits under the bedroom window so I can sit there and apply my makeup by natural sunlight.I also had a Clairol makeup mirror already when I found my vanity so I have it sitting beside the vanities mirror - it has a natural side and a magnified side, and it lights up.It also has an outlet on top so I can plug in my hair curler right at the mirror. The bad thing about my vanity is that we have a mission style bedroom set and the vanity is very Louis XVI so they don't go together. However, if I use your skirt idea all but the top of it would be covered - and I'll just paint that to match the bedroom. Looks like I need a trip to the fabric store for fabric & velcro. I don't have a vanity seat, I use a card table seat, which I had made a slip cover for. I think I'll look for two coordinating fabrics for the vanity & the chair, and make a new slip cover. Seems like a fun project. How much fabric did you need to go around your table?
