How to make a vocal booth at home (5 min to set up)

How to build a DIY vocal booth at home for recording good vocals. You only need a blanket/duvet and a pair of acoustic walls.
Alternatively you can hang blankets on a door and create a space where the sound will not be reflected. The most important thing is to have something to absorb the sound in front of you and behind you.
All the things in the video can be bought at Thomann:
- Acoustic walls: www.thomann.de/dk/clearsonic_...
- Microphone: www.thomann.de/dk/neumann_tlm...
- Microphone tripod: www.thomann.de/dk/km_210-2.htm

A low budget solution for beginner artists is a closet with clothes in it!! Not only is it considered free (given you already own a closet and some clothes), but it doesnt take extra storage. Hang blankets or curtains over any doors/opened space (maybe you dont have a door and have an archway instead for example), and if the floor isnt carpet, cover that with blankets too! It may sound crazy, but it gives the same affect when theres a budget. Unfortunately, a big issue with this setup is vocalists cant always stand up when singing due to shelving or general closet layout. If its too constricting, it can always be the temporary solution until you can upgraded. Other than that, hope this helps!! 😁

FYI everyone, there's a MUCH cheaper version of this that involves a "skeleton" made from PVC tubing and ceiling/walls made from a single mover's blanket. Whole booth should be less than $200.

Even a thin blanket over the top will do wonders, brilliant touch. If you can swing it, a second wall behind you, 3-4 inches of thickness is MAGIC, especially with mixing. Cool thing with that is you can move the wall behind you as far back as you need to control the "openess" of your sound, I personally start with the dampening 4ft behind me and move it back if it comes through boxing, bassy, etc. Sometimes purely tight clean takes aren't what the track needs. This wall is far better than gimmicky vocal shields.

Great microphone, but those panels, or some kind of room treatment, is the real secret here. You could pair those panels (and another, suspended from the ceiling to allow for taller people under it) and a $150 Audio Technica AT2035 and it would sound incredibly professional. That mic you have is a lot of people’s “dream microphone.” Show some details of the panels you are using for everybody. Great setup.

Great idea... If you have the space. Plenty others barely have the room for a mic stand, nevermind the tiny home you call a vocal booth

How well do those walls work, in terms of sound dampening, compared to a closet full of clothes, blankets, and foam?
@christine_bulow
@christine_bulow Год назад
If you have a closet where you are able to stand inside it, then that will be as good I believe. But many people forget to have sound dampening behind themselves and this is where these acoustic walls are really effective :-)
@truecrimereaction

No, just use software in 2024. OBS is free and it cuts out all room noise. That Neumann mic is still bringing in every noise for 2 houses down the road with that set up.

So did you need to buy 2 of these jointed wall panels? I see one goes for $205 but am guessing you had to spend twice in order to make the booth? Thanks!

Yes I had to buy Two😅 they were quite expensive but not compared to renting a studio
@hawkeshiphop
@hawkeshiphop Год назад
@@christine_bulow no definitely not! how do you like the quality you’re getting? I also use a TLM103 with an iso vox 2. But the acoustics are so dead and muffled that it’s hard to get a natural recording :/ Way too much low end build up
@hawkeshiphop
@hawkeshiphop Год назад
@@christine_bulow it’s like everyone suggest recording in a room and not a booth but a lot of people need the booth to isolate from neighbors, as well as the vibe it’s just better with a booth haha

@@christine_bulow Awesome! And it seems like behind you is still all open. Like the boy is a U shape? Are you still getting a pretty dry vocal? I do hip hop stuff & like it to sound dry / upfront & prefer to add light reverb w/ plugins

When I record vocals by myself, I run back and forth between the daw and the booth. No ideal aha. But otherwise my producer will be there.
