This tutorial will show you how to make a washable face mask that is water repellant, has snug fit around the nose and mouth, is comfortable to wear and has a shapeable nose wire.
When outbreaks occur and medical supplies are in short supply, we need to make our own from the materials we have available. I have drafted a custom pattern to make washable face masks in 2 sizes.
These masks use weather resistant upholstery fabric. They are also very close fitting and comfortable, allow minimal air to come in from the edges, unlike surgical masks. These are washable in warm soapy water and can be reused again. They are also fully adjustable and have a shapeable nose wire to ensure the best fit possible.
Make some for your friends, family and strangers in need.
Please note, these masks are diy and not guaranteed to fend off viruses. They are simply a way to better protect yourself when around other people who may be infected and to protect others if you are infected but do not know it yet.

Song: Complicate ya.

This is the quickest, easiest and best mask pattern...ever! I had to add a bit of length and a 1/4 inch around the pattern I for women...still the same shape and fits like a glove. For those of you wanting a child size, just decrease the women’s mask pattern by a quarter inch all the way around and in length...try it out. Thank you for creating this pattern👍🏼💗

Haven’t touch a sewing machine in years but I followed your instructions and it was really easy. I selected your pattern because I liked how it was snug to the face and comes below my chin. The female size worked for both myself and my daughter (12 years old). Now I’m going to work on my husbands. Thank you so much! May God bless you.

Nicole, I love your pattern and I use it, but I did tweak it a little, on the inside fabric where you put your wire, well I also placed a 21/2" X 4" piece of fabric so a filter could be slide in. It is big enough to cover the nose and mouth. And fit is the same very comfortable and easy to breathe through. I hope you don't mind that I added to your mask and hope you will try it and use it. I use the natural brown coffee filters because they haven't been chemically treated.

I suggest you fold the center seam allowances to the side - lining going one way and upper going the opposite way. This would prevent anything coming through the seam . The seams will nest together.
@JanineCeleste
@JanineCeleste 4 года назад
Thank You! This is the only comment I've seen that brings up the major problem with the seam going up the center of the masks. Most of these wonderful women who are donating their time to help others learn to make their own masks, are not health care professionals and do not understand the science behind a tight fitting mask, or one without holes. There are a lot of copy cats making the same useless masks, and I don't mean to say that this pattern is useless, it is one of the better patterns for sure, but yes, the seam is an issue. I've heard some people talk about sealing any holes from straight pins and sewing needle with hot glue, only the temp should be put on low, not hot. :)
@NicoleHerrickDIY
@NicoleHerrickDIY 4 года назад
I definitely agree. I’ve been doing this and also top stitching along the centre seam to lock everything in place. With all the layers, the top stitch doesn’t create extra holes.

If you plan on making a lot of these try zigzagging the wire to a few feet of the ribbon all in one piece then cutting the length you need for each mask. Then stitch as instructed or add with a big zigzag stitch to sew down in one go. Turn the ads under to keep the sire from sticking out with use.

I made a facemask using your template today, I am trying to figure out a good way to make a pocket for replaceable filters though. I have not used a sewingmachine in years so I need a bit of practice lol But for now I added an extra layer on the inside that don't go all the way to the sides, where I can add filters in halves from each side, also because of the extra layer I had to add the noseband last by sewing it on by hand otherwise the stitches would hinder insertion of filters. I wanted a full pocket instead of two half pockets. But that was all I could do with my half assed skills. Thank's to your pattern it fits perfectly though, so I'll propably make more. And eventhough I did not manage to add a filterpocket the way I wanted it still seems to work pretty well the way it ended up. But I am chronically ill and the pain got too intense to keep going after just one mask, so I'll have to rest a couple days before making another one. But if I keep making them one at a time whenever my health allows it, I still should have a decent amount eventually 😉 Thank's a lot for the template, it works fantastically well 👍

Thank you for this! I have yet to try it but the video instructions seem (or seam, get it? LOL) easy to follow. I've been looking for a tight fitting mask WITHOUT filter pocket. Air will take the path of less resistance and a filter will force air to enter through the sides, bottom, etc unless there is a tight seal. Thanks Nicole for taking the time to share this tutorial. It is definitely the best fitting mask pattern I have come across and your tutorial is easy to follow and understand. I'm just really tired of doctors and medical personnel here in Canada advising us NOT to wear any mask if you are well. I fail to understand how MY wearing a homemade mask is interfering or putting anyone else at risk. I go out once every 2 weeks to the grocery store and I am full of anxiety doing it. The mask for some strange reason seems to calm me down. I shop quickly, get out of the store and come home. Heaven help the next person that has something to say to me about wearing my mask. I'm done with stupid people. Thanks again for sharing your expertise.

Bonnie Weiss I agree. I honestly believe the only reason they are telling well people not to wear masks is because of the shortage of N95 masks. We need to make sure our healthcare workers and the infected have enough first, that’s why these masks are a great alternative for the assumed “well” but potentially infected. Actually Dr Fauci said yesterday that there is new evidence that wearing masks, even cotton ones can slow the spread of the virus.

Since you are using a coated fabric, I'd suggest no pins through the fabric. That leaves holes that organisms can pass through and is less protective.

You could add an inside pocket, like other patterns, to insert 2 cut pieces of vacuum cleaner bag paper and get close to N95 filtering with tight fit.

@@NicoleHerrickDIY yes, that would be awesome. I am really liking the mask pattern you made and the way it fits your face, however I am in need of adding a filter pocket as well. I don't have that water proof fabric. Can you breathe thru that fabric? It is still woven fabric so it may still let in a virus. I am going to put non woven interfacing in between layers. I heard that helps keep germs out.
@NicoleHerrickDIY
@NicoleHerrickDIY 4 года назад
Denise Winant I think of you used a non woven interfacing this would be a great help. That type of material is called polypropylene and it’s what is used in surgical masks, however the degree of filtration cannot be known on interfacing compared to the polypropylene used in surgical masks. You can try ordering water resistant online or you can also use hepa filter fabric found in vacuum bags and air vents. These can also be purchased online.

Make sure your print out is true to size. Some printer settings automatically adjust the size, i.e. reduce the size of the image. There is a scale at the bottom of the pattern page, so you can check with your own ruler.

I really like this pattern, thank you. I wouldn't use any pins to hold the material. A pinhole is a HUGE opening for a virus to be able to penetrate the mask. I'm also applying washable/dryer proof fabric glue to all my seams as these are also gateways for the virus to enter. If anyone wants to make a pocket on the inside of their mask, you can insert a 3M Filtrete HVAC 2200 Filtration Level filter. I have the statement from 3M stating that the filter does not contain any harmful materials. As added protection, soak all your material in citric acid and let air dry. This is actually a similar process used in making N95 masks.
@NicoleHerrickDIY
@NicoleHerrickDIY 4 года назад
SharaLee that definitely sounds like a much better protection level. 3M and hepa filter supplies are very short in some countries. Pin holes close as soon as the fabric is washed or pulled.

Rain Bow add an extra layer that is 2 cm shorter in width on both sides (4cm total). Hem the sides of that layer before sandwiching between the other 2 layers to stitch around the outside. When you turn it right side out, it should face you and have and opening at either side to slide the filter in. Make this from 100% cotton.

John Farrell gentle hand wash with soap or laundry detergent is what I have put in my wash instructions. This won’t remove the water repellant layer. The layer is actually a resin so it’s very tough.
