How about doing this in a foundation wall? With an existing window that’s installed sitting in a steel window buck?
@AceEverett
@AceEverett 6 месяцев назад
Brick or concrete isn't really that hard. You'll just need to rent a large wet saw and account for the wood framing you're going to put in before cutting, tapcon the framing in, then the rest besides aesthetics is just like doing it on a stick house.

Gutting the interior of my 1900’s house and 1 out of 15 studs might be a solid piece top to bottom. The majority so far are scrap pieces they nailed together. Doorways? We just cut the studs and added no support of any kind. Even on load bearing walls. Bent over nails holding electrical wires to studs. How this house has stood this long without burning down is a mystery

I've read that metals don't "bounce the radiation back". But they emit very little infrared, compared to other materials, when heated to the same temperature.
@fgbhrl4907
@fgbhrl4907 6 месяцев назад
They absolutely do. Think of them as a mirror across a wide spectrum, including deep infrared (heat). In thermal equillibrium, the amount you absorb is equal to the amount you emit. Your piece of shiny metal absorbs very little energy (because it reflects a bunch), and therefore it also emits very little (emissivity).
@weekendwarrior3420
@weekendwarrior3420 6 месяцев назад
But the aluminum foil on the back side of a board doesn't get any radiation. it only gets the heat from the board heated by sun or air on the other side. So it doesn't "bounce radiation back", but emits much less into the house than a naked board would. I think this is the use case for Florida. @@fgbhrl4907

I would use blocks onto studs so you can nail straight into and not toenail alot stronger and it looks like a professional framer did it because you cut blocks to go all the way up and down so it's strong

This is DIY, but most of the time there will be headers with jack studs, which are not DIY for people not knowing how to rebuild structural framing for windows.

@@tristanmartinez2667 the age of the house is irrelevant to proper window installation. The rough opening is oversized to allow for adjustments because of bad framing. All window manufacturers state in the warranty that a window must be hung plumb, level, and square, or the warranty is void.

I saw another utuber put butyl tape along the window flange before screwing it to the window hole. Might be overkill, but windows are a key source of water leaks in a mobile home. Easier than silicone and will last longer than the window.
@TheSeriesofTubes
@TheSeriesofTubes 5 месяцев назад
Every exterior wall is absolutely structural, that’s why the original windows are so narrow, so they fit in between the studs. You also don’t attach framing members with screws you need nails, nails don’t shear when there is a racking force.

A bathroom window that needs to be changed... that brings me back (trauma). Seriously, listen to the advice about leaving the sledge away unless you have no other choice. They built the bathroom like a bank vault, I wasn't able to tell the wall was cinderblock (but the screwdriver did gently go through the 2 by 6 that framed the window), and by the time I was able to know what the walls were made of, it was already too late. Concrete and steel mesh everywhere. x_x I definitely would have done things differently had I known then what I know now... would have saved me from taking a pickaxe to the walls for 2 weeks after my college classes. A small circular saw with a diamond blade would have been ugly (window was being filled in), but way less work. Needed to cut into the tile to remove the old wood. And, again, I was expecting a wood framed wall so I thought taking force to it was an okay idea. Turned into a full bathroom reno... I feel good that I was able to do it and make it look nice thanks to this channel's videos, but that was such a pain since we had no shower and I only barely passed my college classes. Keep in mind, I'm dizzy 24/7 so it takes me way longer to do that stuff.
@DeanMeilken

Ok, so here it is, when i tile a bathroom shower, i always lay the floor down along with the bench tile down first......then the wall tile, so when water/moisture runs down the wall to the tile floor/bench tile itll hit the tile and run off to drain. With modern systems, is that still needed? I noticed you ran the wall first an butted the floor and bench to the wall. My only thing is; that if that grout or silicone line fails.....the water/moisture has an easier route to go underneath/behing the tile. How good are the new waterproof systems? I lay the durock down mud tape seams then roll and paint the rubber waterproof membrane on, never tried the newer systems.

In these mobile homes they use the thinnest - lightest products possible to construct due to weight limits when transporting over the roadways - especially on the older ones. Hence - all the thin cheap stuff you are running into. We remodeled our 1982 double wide after the tenants we had for 5 yrs trashed it. We had to take the whole thing down to the studs and sub-floor. We had no choice - still had a mortgage on the thing and our state now has a law that you cannot move a mobile after a certain age - you can only tear it down or remodel it. We needed to sell - so remodel it was.

Your $200 window is USD $253/m2 30 inches x 52 inches. Which is interesting for me because in Australia rooftop solar PV 6.6kw system covers 32m2 of roof. And can cost as little as AUD$3,600 installed on the roof with the inverter and wiring and fixings and paperwork..... That is AUD$112/m2 = USD$74/m2 Rooftop solar is cheaper than windows $/m2. The State governments do not want to spend money on the old fossil fueled generation plants. Or garrentee private owners cash flows to do maintenance that the owners know will not have enough time to payback the investment. State governments and private investors are building big batteries and encouraging home owners to go independent on electricity generation and feed into the grid with cheap electricity for others. You made me think, Hahaha 😊
