I admit that I had never heard the term “glut hammer” before. I would have thought of them as a large mallet. Seems like I am always learning something new on this channel. That is a part of the appeal that Mr. Mike Reed brings to RU-vid. He is informative and an excellent teacher. He always has a focus on the educational aspect of making the videos for his channel. He doesn’t hesitate to explain things in such a way that can be understood easily. He is willing to demonstrate the skills and techniques that he his discussing in his videos. Whether it is forging a tool in his blacksmith shop or cooking up some squirrel meat on the trail, Mr. Reed is going to take the time to show us how to do it by doing it himself. Today, he demonstrates how to make a large glut hammer. I appreciate his effort. - Tennessee Smoky
My parents called them a knot maul. Made from a knot on the side of a tree. When used with a metal wedge to split firewood it would never damage the wedge where a sledgehammer would ruin it. Brings back old memories.
Being that its July 23, 2023, happy belated birthday Mike... love the hammer...i wonder how well i could carve a handle hole into some hard wood like some hickory. I have some outback that i cut up with my 25 inch Stihl with a semi chisel chain on it. Cuts through hickory like butter.
