The Born Maker - Wooden USB Drives
Step by step instructions for three different styles
In this video I will show you how to make a set of wooden USB flash drives. I used scrap pieces of walnut and white oak with a couple of modified USB drives I picked up at a trade show.
If you'd like to build one for yourself, you can find blank USB drives online or you can always try tearing apart an old one you don't care about like I did.

I've made my own 16 GB one with just a scroll saw, a pencil, hot glue, and Titebond. The cap did stay on, but wasn't very good. It was very durable, a good throw at my concrete floor didn't even make a scratch.

Only issue I see is that the wooden casing might be a little to wide for many USB ports that are side by side or on top of each other when other devices are also plugged in. But.. cool idea :)

I made one from those big pink erasers that you get in schools. And it even had a cap so that it would look like a normal eraser again.

Does anyone know where to buy the actual USB components? I would like to be able to make my own custom USBs but need to be able to buy the parts instead of taking them from others already made as I go through about 200/year.

+The Born Maker These are awesome, and you're probably safe because they came from HP, but tradeshow drives are not a smart thing to plug into your computer. You never know what is on them and what it could be doing to your PC.

really lucky you didn't get kick back cutting that tiny piece of wood on the tablesaw, anything inside the blade length is for sure dangerous

You're absolutely right. I'm going to favorite your comment so it pops to the top. I was pretty new to working around a table saw (to make things even worse) but I'd recommend anyone either use a bandsaw for some of the tight cuts or to look into a sled with zero clearance that you can utilize some hold downs to be a lot safer. Thanks for the feedback.

I made one of these with a metal hacksaw on wood and blunted chisels. First world problems. To be honest it actaully came out alright, just a little large being i dont have a machine to make it smaller

I don't have any of this equipment, but I'd buy a bunch of these if I could. Maybe I could get a SanDisk 8-16GB and 3d print a case at a hackerspace.

put a magnet in the end and one in the cap. then you can stick the cap to the drive when not in use.
