In this video tutorial I teach you how to sew a yarn cozy using stretch knit fabric. These are a handy accessory for anyone who knits and/or crochets. Yarn cozies help keep unruly yarn cakes and balls in place until you finish it up! They take just a few minutes to make and your crafty friends will love to receive them as a gift!
I share my tips and sewing machine settings with you and this is a beginner friendly sewing project. Have fun with it!

Thank you! I am a knitter and had purchased a couple of knit remnants to sew cozies. But have had some difficulty figuring out a great way to make them your tutorial and as perfect and easy to follow. I was able to understand it and adjust slightly to whip them up on my serger.

I got one as a gift and I have thrown it in with my knits when I was them. I use a no rinse detergent for my knits so I just let it soak for a few and then air dry. The one I was gifted I believe is cotton spandex and hasn’t shrunk this far (9 months).

OMG!! Crochet alot of dish cloths. I could of used this.I usually have my yarn in a bag so it doesn't run across the floor. was going to make a yarn bowl out of clay.. this would be better, doesn't take up slot of room or have to worry about it getti g broke and easy to travel with. don't sew much with stretchy material, ribbing I know I have. with our fabric stores closed :( I'll try one with that. THANK YOU DO MUCH. also like the way you attached the one end of yarn to the wrapper so can pull from center. I always have a mess trying to find center of yarn. Any tips on finding center of yarn when not rewinding a skein? THANKS AGAIN.. :)

How would cotton Lycra work?

Beautifully. The cotton spandex ones shown are the same as Lycra and Spandex are the same fiber but spandex is the generic name whereas Lycra is trademarked.

You are such a good teacher. Even a new sewist can make these! I was overthinking a project bag, thinking I needed to add a removable divider for yarn balls. These are much better, and will work perfectly! My daughter has a knit fabric habit, I sew with cottons. These are perfect to use up scraps and keep our yarn neat in storage and when knitting or crocheting. A million thanks!

Thanks for this great idea, Vanessa. I knit and crochet a lot and use thread nets on my yarn cakes, but these yarn cozies will be much more economical as I can make quite a few with a yard of fabric.

If the fabric is cotton spandex I use the cotton setting. If it’s a poly spandex I set it a little lower.

Perfect tutorial! I’m finally learning how to use my sewing machine. This is perfect for beginners to make something that isn’t too hard but useful. I found some stretchy remnants on sale so for under $5 I have made 4 so far. Super handy for knitters and crocheters because the yarn cake stays wound in the project bags.
