"Stove Secrets" - Alcohol stove builds, tips, tricks, and secrets for the true DIY gear junkie. No fancy or expensive tools & machinery required! In this project we tackle a very simple, yet innovative alcohol stove build... "The Zero Stove". With no jets to drill, no separate pot stand needed, and no inner core, this stove is the sheer essence of simplicity... hence the name "Zero". All that is needed to make this non-pressurized, double-walled alcohol stove is a couple of aluminum beer cans and a few common household tools. This lightweight alcohol stove is super easy to make and works like a champ... a definite step up from the ol' "cat can" stoves that most of us DIY hacks have thrown together. All-in-all, the Zero Stove's no-frills design makes for a sturdy and efficient little alcohol stove for ultralight and lightweight backpacking. Best of all... it's free!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stats:
Weight - 14 grams
Fuel Capacity - 3/4 oz.
Boil Time - 5 minutes (controlled environment)
Total Burn Time - 9.5 - 10 minutes
Special Considerations:
- JB Weld recommended for joining components
- Priming of stove greatly enhances performance
- Burn time can be extended by adding 1/8" to outer wall
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Due to the interest in the previous "Stove Secrets" giveaways, I will be giving away yet another alcohol stove for this video (you can see it via the link below). To enter simply leave a comment as usual and then include a line at the end that says "Count me in". I'll pick a winner in the next episode of "Stove Secrets" and get one of these cool little alcohol stove out to someone. Thanks for playin' along ;-)

@IntenseAngler Nice minimalist stove that I have a need for (a couple of small pots) time to boil? Under 5-6 minutes? Thanks I’ll make one ASAP but I’m calling mine “the door knob stove” what it looks like lol oh also is there room to put a wick in it?

Superb. I got nowhere drilling holes in beer cans then again I can't open a door without pulling it off it's hinges. Looks like even a ham fisted chump like me might be able to make this. If you hear a small village in herefordshire has burnt down it means I got it going.

Thanks for the good questions (I'll get the stats listed in the description area asap). I've tested it with 1 1/2 cups tap water using a 10cm Imusa pot and gotten consistent boil times around 5 minutes (controlled environment). A little JB Weld certainly wouldn't hurt to keep things solid (I'd actually recommend using it). I've been messing around with the first one that I made for a couple of months now and it is still holding up great without it though. Hope that helps... All the best!

Excellent craftsmanship my friend. I got one suggestion, and mind you, its just a suggestion, but the aluminum bottles for the soft drinks, Pepsi, Coke, ect only come in the 8 ounce size. Not sure what you are working with there, but I had an idea. Use another can over the outer one to fuel the stove. I don't know what mods should be made, nor do I have an idea on how to affix the can to the reservoir Could be either a tin can or an aluminum can, and also would add some more stability to the stove itself as well as lengthening the full use time of the stove / heater if needed. Love your craftsmanship on this vid. Keep up the good work.

It works well however the narrowness of the center support stand makes it inherently unstable so the user would need to be careful that the stove is on very stable/level ground as the margin of error is small. Nice design though. I'm inclined to use it with a caldera cone-style system which provides both support and a windscreen in one.

If you can use 99.9% methanol which I think you can is the cheapest flammable you can get around here. I live in Hamilton Ontario and at Canadian Tire stores they have four liters of 99.9% Methanol for 7 dollars and 99 cents. Usually it is ten dollars. This is a very cheap source and it burns great. Is it more expensive other places, because that is what I was told?

Aren't there any problems with leaks after a time of using ? The bottom is not sealed, only by press fitting, but that can loose after the stove heats up? Potentially dangerous while someone selects bottles with a bit different diameters. However nice design, something other than all others.

I've been using this particular stove off and on for several years now and haven't had any issues with leaks personally. For added assurance against potential leakage I would recommend using a bit of JB Weld around the bottom where the two sections join. Thank you very much for your compliment on the stove design by the way, I really appreciate it. All the best.....

I had the same experience. What I did to fix it was cut about 1/4 inch off the outer ring to increase the gap size and distance from the pot which sits on the center ring. Mine is working ok at the moment, but I have noticed that it doesn't burn well like shown in the video until the pot is warmed up. I am going to build another one with slightly different dimensions tonight to test a few theories I have and see if I can improve upon the build.

I will be giving this a go tonight. Before I start cutting.. it seems that the inner piece is wider at the bottom than the outer piece before you join them, but the outer piece is cut lower on the bottle. It seems that the lower/outer one would be wider or the same width as the widest part of the inner piece. Am I missing something? ...btw.. my alluminum bottles are smaller (11.5 oz), so I am estimating my dimensions based on where the bottles curve. love your vids!

@xenaguy01
@xenaguy01 4 года назад
So let me get this straight. 1) You drain all the alcohol from two beer cottles. 2) You cut the two cottles into random pieces. 3) You do, I don't know, *_magic._* 4) You put alcohol _back_ into the bottles. 5) Now you can boil water to make coffee. 6) *_COOL!_*
@SABjork
@SABjork 9 лет назад
Nice! No drilling little holes. Do you use any high-temp gasket seal or muffler sealant before merging the two parts? A leak at the bottom could be a major problem, but it looks like you have a pretty tight fit. The Svea stoves rage, but its nice to have the simplicity and light weight option. I have built a few, but am always looking to improve Thanks!

What happens if you elevate the stove off the table to allow air through the center? Have you tried 91% rubbing alcohol in that? Got any stats like boil times and such? Flame out times? Looks like a JACCS (Just Another Cat Can Stove) lol Without the cat can.
@IntenseAngler
@IntenseAngler 2 года назад
Elevating the stove won't really effect it's performance because it is a self-contained unit. I haven't personally tried using rubbing alcohol in this particular stove, however I'm sure that it would work great. As far as all of the stats, I have them listed in the description area below this video. I hope that helps my friend. Lovin' the JACCS reference too, lol. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment by the way... it's much appreciated!
@zolar1nonassumpsit219
@zolar1nonassumpsit219 2 года назад
@@IntenseAngler I was thinking about elevating the stove - it could allow more air to mix with fuel and increase combustion efficiency. It could also reduce thermal conduction between the stove and the relatively cold ground. Feel free to use the JACCS reference lolol Basically most stoves are a form of that. Biggest problem with rubbing alcohol is too rich a fuel to air ratio and then it creates soot. If you can solve that problem, such a stove can work with any alcohol and be 'soot-less'. Look up 'center draft' lamps to see how those work.
@zolar1nonassumpsit219
@zolar1nonassumpsit219 2 года назад
@@IntenseAngler I tried rubbing alcohol in my Trangia. I like to NEVER get all the soot off of it. Now I have to test the stove to make sure it works as intended with HEET in it this time.
@IntenseAngler
@IntenseAngler 2 года назад
@@zolar1nonassumpsit219 I definitely agree with you about how much better this (and pretty much all alcohol stoves) performs when it's elevated and insulated from the cold ground... makes a world of difference! I'll definitely be using the JACCS reference in the future as well, lol. Excellent point on the rubbing alcohol by the way... it can definitely create a bit of soot on these types of stoves. I've found it to be a much better alternative fuel for the good ol' simple cat can stoves (or JACCS, haha).
@IntenseAngler
@IntenseAngler 2 года назад
@@zolar1nonassumpsit219 Couldn't agree more my friend... HEET is definitely better that rubbing alcohol for use in the Trangia. In my humble opinion and experience of course. All the best....

(a) set up your marking 'stands' at the right heights - which you have to do anyhow - and you can skip the measuring/marking of the bottles. Just use a clamp (like a Jorgenson) on the bench, angle the marker against a ruler, and you're set. (b) just use a Dremel tool with cutoff disk! Cutting with hacksaw below cut-line, then using aviation snips (which most people don't have) is clumsy. Both distort metal (which is why you're hacksawing a cm away to begin with); and aviation snips are HARD to use well for a beginner. Especially given that they need to use the correct 'handed' snips...! If they have snips, and know how to use them, they have a Dremel -- and many more people have Dremels than snips. >;-)

I don't get why people would bother with alcohol stoves were you have to carry your fuel where a hobo stove made from a coffee can would work perfectly in any situation? And you don't have to carry any fuel with you. Just use twigs and try branches. You can find them anywhere even in a rain storm. Unless this is just to make stuff, it has no other value.
@thecma3
@thecma3 11 лет назад
Priming is a term used in the use of liquid fuel stoves. It refers to the period in which the stove is heating up before the fuel begins to vaporize at the intended rate. Once this is achieved, the stove is ready for use. You should not use a stove before it's primed, as the pot/pan may conduct away too much heat and cause the stove to perform below the standard.
