How To Make Alcohol Ink Pendants - Brand New!

A completely new video on how to use my crushed tin foil method to make alcohol ink pendants that have the look of dichroic glass pendants that you could sell at craft fairs.
Last year I made my first How To Make Alcohol Ink Pendants video and it has been extremely popular - but a few people asked if I could show some steps I left out and some also found the sound levels a bit extreme. I don't want to make anyone jump while listening :-) - so I made this new film with more info and new colors.
Thanks for watching. People also asked about supplies so I have made to lists of links on my blog, one for US and one for UK. There is a link to the post on the end screen of the film. Thanks for watching. www.funcraftstodoathome.com

Hello Debbie, thank you for watching and for your lovely comment. Alcohol inks are definitely very colorful - have you seen any of the videos by people using them to create art on Yupo paper? If you do a search on RU-vid you’ll see quite a few. Have fun making pendants and thanks again for watching.😍

Thanks Melinda - it's my dad - it's hard to even write that down. We are saying goodbye to him tomorrow and then we have to get used to a different life. My mum is 90 and he died 11 days short of their 70th wedding anniversary. He was 92 but it's still hard to deal with. Will be back in the blogosphere before long - I haven't forgotten you. xox

@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 5 лет назад
Thank you very much - I appreciate you watching and commenting. You may be right - all you can do is try and see what happens. These are reasonably quick to make if you create a large piece of inked foil from which to cut lots of circles from one inking session. Anything that is quick to make while still managing to look really pretty is a very good thing to make for craft fairs. Nothing worse than a product that costs you hours and hours in time that you cannot reflect in the price people are willing to pay. Let me know how you get on and good luck with your sales.

Hello in 2023... :) I'm curious to ask what the difference between this super fun technique and actual dichroic glass?
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 7 месяцев назад
Hi Kelley, this fun way of getting a dichroic like effect is totally different to the actual dichroic process. The dichroic process requires much more skill, equipment and knowledge. You would be using metal oxides and glass which would need to be fired in a kiln to fuse them. So it's a much more expensive hobby than the effect you can get with what I've done here. I have never tried it - I don't have a kiln. Hope that answers your question. Many thanks for watching!🙏❤️

What a clever way to use bottle caps! The pendants turned out very nice. I've been seeing a lot of stuff on alcohol inks and many foil projects lately and am wondering, what makes them different from other paints &/or Sharpies? I would have thought the foil is what lends the crinkle & shiny effect, therefore the source of color would be irrelevant, but I do not have first-hand ink experience yet. And I am also curiou is alcohol inks can be used to paint glass, have you ever used them on glass? Just a curious newbie here, any info you share is greatly appreciated, and,, THANKS for the lovely video.
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 5 лет назад
Hi Andrea - many thanks for watching and engaging. The question of what mediums could be used on foil is a good one. For me, the magic of using alcohol inks is the addition of the blending agent which makes your chosen ink colors do unpredictable things and I love watching what happens when I spray alcohol onto the colors. But you could experiment with any medium that would stick to foil really. And no, I haven’t used them on glass (as far as I can remember!) but as the alcohol inks are made for non-porous surfaces such as ceramics, then glass should be perfect. When I did used to paint on glass, I used special glass paints but maybe they were alcohol based and I didn’t realise. I’ll have to look that up because they were cheaper than alcohol inks! Thanks again and I hope that helps - feel free to ask any further questions - I’m always here.

@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 4 месяца назад
Hi Brenda, thank you and I’m glad you liked it. Yes, alcohol ink does require health and safety measures taken. I’m not sure if acrylic ink would work because I haven’t tried it. Do you have any of these that are a few years old? I've found resin domes like you're using tend to yellow. Obviously this is simple to replace jewelry, but just wondering if any yellowing is visible, or would be. Great video, watched both, thank you for the idea :)
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 7 лет назад
+Aeryn Kelly I have some that are about 3 or maybe 4 years old and I haven't noticed any yellowing but then I haven't really looked. I will have to dig some old ones out and look! It might depend what you are sticking them to, photo based images could easily go yellow and maybe any substrate that isn't acid free? Thanks for your comment and the tip about yellowing - maybe others will see it and tell us if it's happened to them.
@khione8044
@khione8044 4 года назад
@@RainbowLane All Resin eventually begins to Yellow over time, as it is exposed to UV Light. Depends on the Brand of Resin it was made out of, will determine how much UV Resistance that it has, before it will start to Yellow.

Hello Ellie, thanks for watching and your lovely comment. Obviously I don’t know where you live but as long as you have access to the internet you can get resin or glass domes online. Just Google 1 inch round glass cabochons or 1 inch round resin stickers. If you get stuck, go to my craft website (there is usually a link to it at the very end of all my film so) and look for the links to my Amazon shops (.com or .co.uk) and have a browse though. You will find the glass domes and resin stickers there. But just Googling using the terms I said above will get you to lots of people selling them. Good luck and thanks again.😍

What does PVA stand for? I wonder if it's like Elmer's Glue or Mod Podge in the States?
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane Год назад
Hi Ginny, it's Polyvinyl Acetate - and yes, it's like Elmers (or maybe School Glue?). And yes Mod Podge too but I think Mod Podge has different qualities depending on which type you use - there are so many different sorts of Mod Podge but it is basically the same as PVA - just higher quality and more expensive. I have not tried the diamond glaze yet but I use mod podge as well as jewelry glue and it made the alcohol ink lift off the foil under the glass and it warped the coverage of the ink and mixed some of the colors to look muddy a little. Do you possibly know why that happened? Is it something that I should be able to avoid using the diamond glaze do you think? I really love these pendants and a lot of people are really wanting to buy some from me, I just don’t want to sell them if they are going to turn out funny. Lol thanks!

Hi Sarah, you definitely need something like Diamond glaze, Glossy Accents or Anita's Clear Gloss. All I can say is, I have a few of these pendants that I made years and years ago - and I've worn them a lot! They are still going strong with no problems. You should be fine selling them - I mean, nothing lasts forever does it? If people want jewellery that is going to last for decades then they need to buy diamonds! 😎 Not sure where you live but here in the UK, I found some teeny little bottles of Diamond Glaze - 10ml - that were around £3.50. Maybe you could get one of those to just try it out. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I dont have clear gloss and my diamond glaze wont stick to my glass domes. What else can i use to get the tin foil to adhere to my glass domes?
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 3 года назад
Sorry for late reply! Did you solve your problem? What other products have you got? I've never known Diamond Glaze to not stick - are you in a very cold or a very hot climate? Sometimes extreme temperatures will affect glues and glazes. Hope you've found a solution.🙏

Can you use the regular Tim Holtz alcohol ink, not the botanical

Yes, I have used regular Tim Holtz inks this way but I have also used some less expensive alcohol inks too. Many thanks for watching. 🙏💕

Hello and good morning! I would be grateful for your help please. Great video, very precise! I followed your instructions and thought that everything looked fine. But sadly, the ink in my pendants seems to have gone blotchy and in most cases I am left with the silver foil showing and the ink in clumps around the edges. Help please! Where have I gone wrong?
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 6 лет назад
Oh dear that's not good! You must be very disappointed. What brand of inks did you use and in particular, what colors? Based on an experience I had the other day, it seems that some colors take ages to dry and don't blend nicely like the colors I used in my videos. I use the Tim Holtz inks by ranger and they have never let me down - however, cheaper inks in certain colors seem to not work so well.

Hi Gilly, Thank you for responding to my call for help! The inks I used were Adirondack Raspberry and Purple Twilight. I also wondered if the Diamond Glaze wasn't the ideal glue. Would you say that ideally the colours you used would be worth a try?
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 6 лет назад
+Joyce Smart-Gill So those are the Tim Holtz Ranger inks then. I have recently had issues with the Raspberry taking ages to dry for some reason. Did you make sure that the inks were 100% dry before you put the Diamond Glaze on? A good way to gauge that is to have a scrap piece of tin foil that you can use as a tester to touch and see if it's dry. The other thing that can affect the successful gluing of the glass domes is possibly oil from our fingers. I found that out the other day when I made some pendants using images cut from photographs. I had tiny patches where the glass wasn't keeping contact and light patches were appearing. The only thing I could think of was oil on the glass or the image. So now I clean both with a soft cloth and lighter fluid before I stick the glass down. My next batch were fine. But of course, if you try that with scrunched tinfoil and inks, do a test piece first to make sure the lighter fluid won't damage the ink. Also, when you scrunch the foil, maybe wear clean thin rubber gloves to avoid finger oil from getting on there. Try not to touch the flat surface of the glass after you clean it. Make sure your tin foil is good quality and put the ink on the shiniest side. I also think the temperature can affect the action and drying of the inks. Don't know where you live - is it humid at the moment? And about the Diamond Glaze, I don't think that is the problem, I swear by it and have never had any issues. You only need a tiny blob, too much could cause problems. And by all means try the colours I used. Success probably depends on so many different factors like drying time in your climate and room temperature. Hope that helps and good luck!

This is a fantastic response and I thank you very, very much. I will take note of your recommendations as I am determined to succeed! I really love your pendants. So I will work through everything you have mentioned and see how I get on. Your video is brilliant, by the way! Thanks again for your time and thoughts, to try to get me on the right track. xx

+Joyce Smart-Gill you are most welcome Joyce - let me know how you get on and remember that having the silver ridges showing is fine, the inks will pool in the 'craters' - just let them dry really well.xx

Do you spray with an adhesive varnish or uv protectant? For normal AI paintings you are supposed to do that.

No Judy , I just use the adhesive that attaches the domes. My oldest necklaces done this way are really ancient now and have been worn loads but they still look vibrant. Thanks for watching and commenting by the way, much appreciated.

Beautiful! Can you use acrylic paints?
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 2 года назад
Hi Lorraine - the effect come from the way the ink runs and blends into the crevices created by the scrunching of the foil. And also from the reaction of the alcohol blending solution. So I’m not sure that you could get the same effect - but maybe a different one! 🤗Thanks for watching. 💕

Hello 👋 Thank for that information, the acrylic paint didn’t dry, so I took the sheet of foil and put the paint on cardboard light weight

Yeah - foil is funny stuff to work with but at least we figure out what doesn't work when we try these things. We never stop learning and it's all good fun! 💕

Hi Jackie - I think it stands for polyvinyl acetate - it's a water soluble glue also called white glue or school glue I believe.

Where can I find the bottle cap bezel?

Never mind 😳that was such a dumb question, I apologize...they are likely actual bottle caps from a wine or beer hobby shop...my head was thinking ‘specialized bezel’🙄😬
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 5 лет назад
No no no - not such a dumb question! The beer bottle caps you buy in the beer brewing supplies stores have plastic liners that you really don't want. You can burn or melt them out but it's such a hassle. If you go online and Google 1 inch bottle caps for crafts, you will get loads of options come up. Some have the glass domes with them as well. I do have them in my Amazon shops if you get stuck but really, if you just Google it you should find them really easily. You can get black, silver, gold and lots of pastel coloured ones too. So not a dumb question at all and no need to apologize! I appreciate you watching and taking time to comment. 😍

You definitely should have told each viewer early on gloves. That is wrong you did not. I am a mess with one try and no solution for my stained hands
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 5 лет назад
Hello Debra - I recommend using gloves and a mask right at the start of the film (0.58 seconds into the film - check it out) - this is clearly shown and I also tell you that if you don’t use gloves, you will end up with stained fingers. The recommendation to wear gloves comes before I begin using the inks. I also commend using a face mask because of the fumes. If you didn’t see my warning, then you must have only watched the video for 32 seconds. Thank you for watching.
