Android development can be a great way to turn your idea into reality or start a promising career as an app developer... and getting started is probably easier than you think.
These days Android Development is done with a tool called Android Studio. Android Studio is kind of like Microsoft Word for writing Android apps; it helps organize our projects and gives us a user-friendly way to create what we’re looking for.
In this video, we’ll walk through installing Android Studio and then make an app. Don’t worry if you don’t have any experience with Android or even programming in general; as long as you follow along we’ll all end up at the same place.

Thank you so much, TreeHouse. I installed Android Studio 3 years ago wanting to learn to build an app. I ended up uninstalling it without getting anything done probably after 2.5 years. Not a damn thing, seriously, because couldn't find a source or someone who could teach from basic. But with this video, I managed to get my first ever app done in my life in 2 hours, including re-installation of Android Studio.

Guys this doesnt work like that in newer versions of Android Studio, I get the Error: "Cannot create an instance of an abstract class>". There is really nothing to this on the web, but you need to remove those "()" behing Random, so not "val rand = Random().next..." instead "val rand = Random.nextIn..." Then it works

This has nothing to do with the Android Studio Version. Are you guys sure you are using the Java.util.Random class? This class is not abstract so there should be no problem with instantiating it... docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/api/index.html?java/util/Random.html

you went too far ahead too quick, and you didn't select which temple or layout, this was soo frustrating, it seems many of these videos are geared toward people who already have an understanding of android studio..I have knowledge of visual basic, but I wanted to start building apps for Android phones so I chose your video based on the title, I keep getting the feeling that many of these beginner videos are more about showing how proficient you are with android studio than actually teaching someone who is very new to it.

Good video. One suggestion I would make is to show the final application before demonstrating the development steps to create it. Doing so will provide context so that the audience knows why things are being added/modified/configured along the way. Another suggestion (for this video) would be to skip the section about installing/configuring Android Studio, especially when opting for a custom installation. This activity should be described in a separate video dedicated to that topic.

Aside from correcting the error in Random function for newer SDK versions, add "+1" after progress to avoid Force Closing when seekbar is at the left most option. So ' val rand = Random.nextInt(seekBar.progress+1) '

To add to this, in the newer API you have to pick the "Random" class that has java.util (the one with the blue 'C' icon when selecting). Fought with my code for a few min before realizing. But good tutorial for beginners.

A little tip: if like me when you go to compile gradle just hangs forever, then disable your virus checker. I use avast and it would not compile at all, until I disabled avast shield

At 14:35 when you automatically import the random method it may try to import the wrong one. You will get an abstract class error. Make sure you import " java.util.* " instead.

My app crashes if I move the seekbar to 0 and press the button. If you have the same problem you can solve this if you put the +1 inside the brackets instead outside (about 16:50 on the video): "val rand = Random().nextInt(seekBar.progress + 1)" Thanks for the video!

I'm going to make this when I go home right in my bed! It took me two damn years to find a video that ACTUALLY teaches HOW to make an app (hope I'm not the only one). Maybe it's because he goes straight to the point, his presence was very welcoming that made me stay, was easy to understand step by step and didn't run his mouth about something off topic like how he likes milk in coffee, what he did the morning other irrelevant b/s like most RU-vidrs and the half beginning in their videos. I know this doesn't explain everything about coding like some are mentioning and why he did certain things but I'm willing to learn more and this beats what I was trying to look for way before. I have a feeling when I following through this entire video again, it will worked and I'm still a neophyte in these kind of things though I'm someone that likes to draw and be creative. Thank you! I appreciate it this education and help! Splendid teacher!

Excellent Video clip! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you heard the talk about - Chiveard Creating Empire Framework (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for learning how to create and develop your own app minus the hard work. I'm not able to run the code. Random() needs to be Random and now I'm getting Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{com.myapp.randomizer/com.myapp.randomizer.MainActivity}: java.lang.NullPointerException: Attempt to invoke virtual method 'void android.widget.Button.setOnClickListener(android.view.View$OnClickListener)' on a null object reference. I'm using Studio 4 (which looks totally different from Studio 3).

Better solution is rollButton.setOnClickListener{ val max = seekBar.progress val result = (1..max).random() resultTextView.text = result.toString() } and add android:min="1" to your seekBar my previous suggestion would generate -1 when the seekbar value was zero.

You start by saying that one does not need to have experience with making apps or coding and then you zoom through 19 minutes that are more or less gibberish to someone who has no experience building apps or coding. I think you should change the intro and acknowledge that you should have some experience with coding in order to gain from this video.

Well, this isn't JavaScript, it would be either Kotlin or Java. You could develop an app using C# which is kinda similar to VB. But in the end it's worth it to develop using either Java or Kotlin. They're both great programming languages, and are much better than VB.

There's a comment above yours that might be helpful. It's by @Dekoeffizient. I'll quote the comment here: "Guys this doesnt work like that in newer versions of Android Studio, I get the Error: "Cannot create an instance of an abstract class>". There is really nothing to this on the web, but you need to remove those "()" behing Random, so not "val rand = Random().next..." instead "val rand = Random.nextIn..." Then it works"

There's a bug. The app crashes when you draw the slider to the left and press the button. Code should be val rand = Random().nextInt(seekBar.progress + 1)
