This is really good from someone who really loves J-pop/rock. I have some feedback, I’ve listened to J-pop/rock for over 6 years so i kinda know a lot of it. I think the build up is perfect, the idea of tempo changing, and having the piano just play freely with emotion is a very japanese thing to do. As a bass player that bass coming in is pretty sick, but I have more to talk about it. The first chorus sounds amazing, only thing is it’s pretty repetitive, and in japanese type of music, something always changes. Mainly the bass and drums, adding unexpected instruments like strings to add in with the melody. But you did a great job with changing the drums fill, but i wish you did something different with the synchronizing where the drums do one hit with every chord progression (0:45 of the song). Like adding a snare hit on the off beat, which you did before coming in full set again. But im talking about snare fills or even toms fills after like the third time doing that synchronizing hit throughout the song. Now for bass, going to be blunt, but it’s also very repetitive. Bass is one of the most important instruments to add flavor to the music in jpop/rock. You cannot sleep on it and just make one cool lick/fill and use it for the rest of the song. It just sounds like american rock music at that point 😂. And imo during the chorus, bass should be 8th notes most of the time, with also hitting the synchronizing spots with the guitar where it does its rhythmic patterns, and the drum. Bass should always have a fill going into the second time of the chorus, and a small fill at the drum hit synchronized part. either a slide into the resolving part where it would restart the chorus again, or a fill in between the synchronized hit with the drums. kinda like responding with the drums if it’s doing fills in between those hits. But usually they only do this during the second time through the chorus, 2nd chorus, and last chorus if there is one. And each time it’s always different, and unique. Sometimes instead of landing on the root note, the bass would sometimes land on the third, or fifth note instead of the root chord. which imo is the coolest thing to do on bass, it’s very unexpected, and adds in a lot to the music. And the rule is to only do it on the last chorus of the song, because that’s where the energy is the highest. Sometimes they also play the melody line, or the harmony of the melody line. Moving onto the verse, same thing with bass, dont make it repetitive. In verse that’s where the bass shine the most, in a lot of Japanese song that’s where the bass is usually the busiest, while also keeping the rhythmic pattern and not get in the way of the main melody. The drum beat is perfect, keeping the energy with no bass or guitar. The bass coming in and the drum leading out is very cool, but the bass should have at least a ninth in there before hitting the III chord, since it’s basically a small solo. The second build up part, i dont think the bass should keep playing the rhythmic part, since there is no drums, i dont see the need of it doing the rhythmic part, instead that’s the perfect spot to change rhythm and play a long high note throughout the chord progression, to make the part stand out. Instead of that descending fill into the synchronizing chord progression, change it to an ascending and land back on the low note. that bass fill leading the drum coming in was prefect. The rest of the build up sounds amazing with the rudiments in the background. And the drums leading into the second chorus is the most Japanese thing, perfect. The second chorus is the same as i talked about on the first chorhs, love that drums part where everything drops out and coming back in on the off beat with the snare. That’s pretty much all with the feedback, quality sounds amazing. I’d give this a 7.5 or 8/10, as a Jpop/rock listener, there are a lot of good things in here and some that can definitely be worked on to make it even better.
@@Stinger21 Most definitely ! The tempo automation , and how to program drum patterns like you've done with the chorus.. !! 👌 also, this reminded me how important sound selection is..thanks man ! 👊
Absolutely loved the video, the tutorial was really complete and even went over the VSTs that you chose, which is always better!! Please do more for other genres if you can!
