In this video you'll learn how to find the radius to make any size arch. Using this method is the fastest and most accurate way to find the radius of a circle so you can make an arch. With only a couple simple steps you'll understand the Intersecting Chord Theorem and how the radius formula works so you never have to forget it again!!

Thank you! This is the exact info I have been needing for years. No more laying out arcs hit and miss with strings and / or any round object that is close to what I need.

Thank you. You stepped that out in an orderly manner making the geometry relate to the formula. One thing though...last formula shown should have brackets [(W/2)^2/ H + H]/2 because “the order of operations” would change your intended result.

Great breakdown, saved me from having to ask my smarty pants engineer wife. Only thing is at 6:30 it should divide everything by 2, not just H.

Thanks I am making a curved railing for my porch. A friend suggested a template made out of card board but still doesn't seem right. So I decided to use math and with your help I'm confident it will turn out nicely! But now I'm having thoughts that this equation will take me to the edge of the porch floor. A1=4.5' AND A2=4.5'. B1 is from center of cord to edge of porch floor. B1=35" I really don't want railing at the edge. I would prefer railing to be back some. So, Im going to revise B1 to 32" and make my template out of plywood.

I’m assuming you already have a curve in your deck. The first step would be to chalk a line between the start and end of the curve, mark the center, measure from center to top of curve and find the radius to draw your arch. If you want to move the railing in a little shorten the arm your using to draw the arch but don’t change the original radius point.

4:30 Is there ANYWHERE you can just get arch patterns in various sizes or a kit of a range of sizes like shown? I'm looking for a range of sizes to determine the different sizes of trees in my yard & the best fitting arch to fit against them to build off of

It's suggest fixing the equation when written out for proper order of operation, if you punch that into a calculator that takes full equations you'll get ( (W/2)^2 / H + H) / 2 If I use W = 72, H = 6, the correct result comes out at 111, but without the extra parenthesis it comes out to 219.

Say the arch in your video is a door header. How do I find the angle to cut header and jamb to match?
@thebuilditchannel8609
@thebuilditchannel8609 2 года назад
The simplest way would probably be to lay it out on the floor and mark the angle.
@mikej2029
@mikej2029 2 года назад
I was hoping you could give me a more exact way with square or angle finder. Your suggestion is what I was taught and only way I’ve seen.
@thebuilditchannel8609
@thebuilditchannel8609 2 года назад
@@mikej2029There is a formula to find the tangent angle of the curve but then you still have to mark it and that is easiest done with a level in the opening or laying it out Then you have to cut it which is also done easiest by lining it up with the blade and using a glide fence.
