How To Make An Automated Chicken Water Trough

I make an automated drinker for my backyard hens.
I used a float valve I purchased from eBay and some basic plumbing supplies I picked up from my local hardware store. The water is collected in rain barrels and fed to the automated system by a regular garden hose.

Best and cheapest waterer I’ve seen yet. Can service any bird from ducks to turkeys and chooks. Well done.

Drywall mud pan with swamp cooler float valve thru end of pan done easy. A lot less drama. Stainless steel lasts a long long time.

I am gonna use float valve from a broken toilet cistern for a dog trough after watching this

So I did make your watering system. Your videos are on fast forward which made it difficult to see the detail in what you did. I used 65 mm polypipe. All up the consumables cost me $70.00. the float didn't work as I thought it would and it leaked from to much pressure on the chamber. I think your video speeds need to be normal speed. I feel like I have wasted $70.00 based on your video. All up a fail.
@lnz971
@lnz971 Год назад
@@robatkinson4222 1. You spend too much 2. the leaking is due to high preasure... or bad jointure. Try " GQF 4020 Pressure Reducing Valve" i raise around 3000 quail, this system never fails me
@bigdogdazza

Bit of silicone would fix any leak. Don’t hook up to mains pressure this is perfect for gravity fed low flow low pressure feed

How is thw watere holding up? Would be interested in seeing it after some of use particular, whether the water stays clean.
@UrbanSelfSufficiency
@UrbanSelfSufficiency 2 года назад
Lasted about 3 years or so. The chickens make the water pretty dirty within a few days. Even the one with a cage on top to stop them from standing on the waterer didn't stop them from making the water dirty.
@philippinesgoodlife
@philippinesgoodlife 2 года назад
@@UrbanSelfSufficiency Yeh, I think having a means of stopping them getting in to the water and a flush system to clean are the challenges. Thanks for the video 😃👍

I’m having trouble finding the piece your fixing the float valve to. The one that connects the two pieces of 3.5” pipe. Any idea the name of that piece or where I can order one?

I will say that it’s a great idea except that all animals need clean water and this allows too much junk to get into their water supply plus they really need Bragg’s organic cider vinegar in their water. Just a thought but thanks for the video.

No other brand of cider vinegar? These can easily be raised off the ground ...

@@clintang8432 Nope, Braggs Organic is the only kind of vinegar any animal can have. It's a wonder animals are still alive at this point!

I need something like this for ducks, but need to have a drain at other end, that periodically flushes dirty water out. The ducks backflush dirt, feed , and mud out of their nose and mouth. Water is dirty within 15 minutes.
@UrbanSelfSufficiency
@UrbanSelfSufficiency 5 лет назад
You could just put a tap on the end and drain it manually for an easy solution, but I guess that negates the nature of the contraption.

I'm wondering if the hose can be connect to a water barrel or if more water pressure is needed...?🤔
@UrbanSelfSufficiency
@UrbanSelfSufficiency 2 года назад
A water barrel would be fine.
@terapiu

Good job, I don't understand why you didn't put the hose directly on the float valve...why complicate with a separate water compartment?!
@UrbanSelfSufficiency
@UrbanSelfSufficiency 5 лет назад
The thread on the float valve was unique. There was no adaptor that would fit it whereby I could connect the hose directly to it... this was the best way around it with what I had available to me.
@terapiu
@terapiu 5 лет назад
@@UrbanSelfSufficiency Ah, I understand.A good workaround, you could also use a metalic fitting, heat it a bit and thread the plastic valve onto it :)

what"s the purpose of the hole at 3:05 !?
@UrbanSelfSufficiency
@UrbanSelfSufficiency 7 лет назад
The float has a screw on the arm that allows you to adjust the angle (or height) of the float to change when the water shuts off; the hole allows me access to that screw so I can adjust as needed. You can see the screw and arm assembly that I'm referring to at 0:18 Jim

Hi. I've watched this a couple of times now! The water line I'm assuming is going to a faucet? Can the waterer work the same way if connected to a big rain barrel?? Thanks.
@UrbanSelfSufficiency
@UrbanSelfSufficiency 7 лет назад
+linda silver Yep. Infact, that's what this one is actually connected to! As long as it's positioned below the rain barrel, as to provide enough gravitational pressure too work the float valve.
@theresmore2learn516
@theresmore2learn516 7 лет назад
Can I bother you for one more question? Can holes be put in the pvc pipe instead of one whole trough type thing?
@UrbanSelfSufficiency
@UrbanSelfSufficiency 7 лет назад
+linda silver I'm sure you could. As long as the holes are large enough to allow the chickens to reach through comfortably, it should be fine. It would certainly help keep debris out of the water. Good idea.
