In this video, I'm explaining how I make a simple art journal sketchbook without the use of any bookbinding skills. I promise--it really is that easy. I hope you give it a try.

Love this video! I have seen the light, will not buy another journal! Thank you for showing me how to be even more independent from buying someone else's idea of a good journal when I can create exactly what I want!

What a brilliant and easy way to make your own journal. I got hooked into buying all the book binding stuff. I spent a day sewing and making my own books and was just exhausted never want to do that again. I am now going to do it this way. thank you for the idea

That was genius!!! I had been watching how to bind multiple signatures without sewing over and over trying to understand the stitch!! You definitely solved that!!! Thank you so much for this tutorial! And it lays flat!!! ❤❤😊

I’ll have to give this a try, as I just finished sewing my art journal with all kinds of paper scraps. Your videos are great Pam, when I started filming 18 months ago on my iPhone, I was really anxious, but then I just said to myself just talk as if you were surrounded by friends and boy did that make a difference 😊

I agree Marie-France, over time we do get better. Making videos isn't as easy as it looks (as you well know!) so I admire anyone who gives it a go. If you can stitch and bind an art journal you probably don't need this simplistic idea I shared but I appreciate your kind words all the same.

Lovely interesting video and this is a great way to make a no sew journal. The wrinkled pages wouldn't bother me that much tbh. I have come across people using wallpaper paste as an alternative to Yes paste, either on its own or with some PVA glue mixed into it. Haven't tried it myself but might be an option. Other alternatives could be Nori Paste or bookbinding glue.

I absolutely love your videos Pam. Your casual style is delightful and I love your work. I'm trying to lose my tendency to be too tight. I recently took CVP and got a tip on glues. Several artists use and love YES glue but it yellows over time. You may find that a little yellowing enhances your esthetic, I know it sometimes adds to mine, but, those who don't want that to happen should be warned. UHU glue seems to keep paper glued well and since it has very little moisture in it, it doesn't promote wrinkling as much when you use a heavy paper. None of the gels, mediums, or PVCs have stayed flat in my collages. Thank you for sharing your ideas and thoughtfulness...you make me smile every time.

Thanks Nancy for your kind words and the information about YES paste. I didn't realize it yellowed so I appreciate you mentioning it. I don't use glue sticks very often but may need to give the UHU stick a try--I know it's recommended by many collage artists. On a separate note, how did you like CVP? Or maybe the better question is--what did you find the most helpful about it? I like Nicholas Wilton's teaching style and took the SPARK class twice back when he offered that.

I loved CVP… I watched every video and all the live calls. I took the class very seriously. I had taken Louise Fletcher’s courses and I follow Judy Woods… both took CVP, and their classes are their version of the material in CVP. All were great, it always helps to hear the same message with a different voice several times. You are so successful just the way you are. These classes have so much to teach us but in the end it’s our journey and our way forward. You are a breath of fresh air and you keep everything fun, you love to explore ideas and experiment. Sometimes these classes make us too critical and feel like we’re barely making progress. Success comes from practice and our style emerges more from happy mistakes. There are times when the structure of a class keeps us motivated, but we seldom learn at such a fast pace. Just keep going, you’re a successful artist❤

@@nancystockmann7264 Nancy, thanks for taking the time to give me your impression of CVP. I have wavered for years trying to decide whether to invest in it or not--it seems that every artist I follow has taken it. Anyway, you are right--our style emerges from just keeping at it, trying new things, being curious and open. I forget that sometimes. I also follow Louise Fletcher & Judy Woods but have not taken a course from them--I like their approach to making art and the generous information they share. Thank you again for your thoughtful response and of course your encouragement to me--it means a lot.

Another question lol: is there a tried and true way to make a “shell” so you can reuse the outside with new pages inside? Kind of like a binder?
@pamhemmerling
@pamhemmerling 6 месяцев назад
That I do not know Nikki. I have only made a few simple art journals with the method described in the video. I would guess there are lots of ideas and options for doing that but you might need to do some research.

Would this work with lace doilies? My grandmother passed and we have tons of handmade pretty things we don’t know what to do with. I’m thinking of making everyone handmade photo albums 😊

I would think lace doilies would work Nikki. I think it would be worth giving it a try--maybe make one first and see how it works before making a bunch of them. What a great tribute to your grandmother! Love it!
