I thought about doing this, but I was concerned about damaging my phone. Don't you need a chip that protects against overcharge?

the overcharging chip is usualy inside the phone or battery

prianshu bhatia Yes regulators set voltage to 5v but it also needs 7.5V at input pin at least to convert it down

No but you can get a 5V boost converter for $5 and that will boost the 3v from the battery's to 5V which can charge a phone! So yes if you get the boost converter

They will last from 7.6 hours on 2500mah rechargeable 1.2v aa batteries and 1.5 hours for 600 mah rechargeable batteries 1.2v aa and 9hours on alkaline battery but the alkaline will lose about of capacity for the head of the batteries

I guess that the amperage is so low (probably around 50 mA) that it would take nearly a whole day to recharge a smartphone.

+tech4 u Thank you so much for your comment :) V=IR, 4 batteries = 6 volt, and the resistance is 0.15Ω (OHM). So the current is 6/0.15 = 40 ampere :)

That's just way too much voltage that you would feed into your phone. If you multiply six by 1.5 volts you get nine volts! and you only need to feed five. You will end up toasting the phone or even blowing your battery!. In an emergency this seems OK but if you want to use this for everyday use just get a decent charger with proper circuitry.

Qadees Butt 1.2 v × 4 = 4.8 Volts is close enough, phone's battery is 3.7 V. Besides, AA rechargeable batteries are popular.

+Yashas gowda This will not as work like power bank to fill up the full charge of your phone. This will just help you on your Emergency situation when you don't have electricity for long time or you stacked somewhere to make emergency calls. or if you want to build up a good backup then go to aliexpress and search rechargeable aa battery per battery capacity is 3800 mAh 1.2v this will give you two times full back up power for your mobile phone :)

+Yashas gowda Your welcome bro :) You just need a AA 3800 mAh 1.2v battery cost around $2-$3 dollars. You have to buy a power bank voltage control chip cost around $1 dollar in local electric shop and connect it through the battery . If you want to increase the power then put two or three batteries to get 7600mAh Or 11400 mAh power depends on you :)
