Just built this last week. Actually puts out a lot of heat, and if a breeze is blowing, the heat will head in that direction. Had people moving to or away from heat depending on what they preferred! Very relaxing watching the flames dance and flicker. I also used wood for base. DIYPete is correct in protecting from fire danger but the correct type of wood and plenty of space underneath to keep pan cool. This is not wood fired, so no sparks or embers to deal with. Thank again DIYPete.
man you look like you have a lot of friends, you lucky guy. nice looking vibe you were able to make from scratch, now i wanna make one for my pals and have the same, cheers for the idea
@@DIYPETE your welcome, I'm looking at trying to get a channel on the go myself but feels weird initially, how did you get over that feeling if you don't mind me asking and do you have any tips? If you don't want this post here feel free to delete it BTW don't wish to be rude and intrude 👍🏻
@@johnsdiy6085 Hey John! Everyone feels a little weird about posting to the world, but you'll overcome it and people will resonate with you and your personality. If you are looking for a good resource I'd check out Tim's channel ru-vid.com/show-UCcB3bcWy0_QK7uPQvTD0LwQ - I've learned a lot from him over the years and met him about 7 years ago at a youtube conference.
Oh cool! Sorry I wasn't interpreting it right. Joe, if you ever have any questions when you start working with concrete please let me know! Cheers man - Pete
I know this video is very old, but I have watched several of your videos on concrete counters and tables. Have you ever thought of making a video showing how to make a vibration table? Thanks for your posts. They are informative and entertaining.
bjørnar magnussen yes i was kind of familiar with the principal i have friends from Iceland but i wasn't totally sure i thought the last name changed with every father lol in retrospect that does seem kind of crazy how could that work. thats cool so you are kind of a viking awesome. i myself have Scandinavian roots somewhere in my lineage i find it very cool. thanks for the informative conversation sir
cj c Well that is how it worked back then. So my son would be named Bjørnarson for example. Would be cool to have that today, but that would be confusing like you say :)
Yea, great Diy channel. Everyone has the tools at home you need for this. Nothing in this vid is Diy for a normal person, with relativ little tools. But Nice work, i realy like it.
Thanks for watching. I have a wide range of projects and this is certainly more advanced, and for someone who has built up their tool inventory. Thanks for watching!
I find doing projects like this give me an excuse to buy more tools. For this project alone I bought a Kreg pocket hole jig, a Kreg clamp and a rubber mallet. Make so.ething nice and no one complains about the tool purchases!
Good video. Makes the project look achievable for those without experience. I have look up the definition of concrete because I've always thought concrete is cement with stone, but everyone is calling these projects concrete.
I think i will actually use this method to create mine, however i am forgoing the concrete base for one with a wood construction so i can house the tank underneath. I was trying to find something to use for a table top, and until now was considering tile. Also, as a tip to anyone else doing this, you can create different effects in your concrete by adding colored sand to your mix.
great project Pete, I want to do a similar project with a water tank bath where the gas flows through the water causing bubbles and flames to come out of the water Alan Sheffield, England, UK
I’m going to use this great video to do a log burning version fire pit. Best instructional video I’ve found on YT. Subbed. Look forward to seeing more .. thanks
Hey Pete this is a great video and well done! Do you mind telling me how much cost you have invested in the materials, including the gas components, rocks, etc? Thanks!
Have you considered using recycled plastic lumber for the forms? It comes in dimensional lumber, 2x4, 2x6, etc, and sheets like plywood. The thickest sheet I have seen is 3/4 but 1 inch may be available. The concrete will not stick as much and deforming should go better.
Hi Michael! Are you talking like the composite type decking materials? I'm not sure I've seen plastic lumber. What brand are you looking at and where do you buy it?
+Valdimar Tjørnudal Hi and thanks for watching. I've been to Copenhagen and love it over there! This is called fire glass and I've only found it available online. Very cool stuff though. I hope all is well over in Denmark!
+DIY PETE yah its getting warm now. and finally my projects are gonna be fullfilled... currently building my porch. and got some plans on how to build a bed for my 2 daughters.. thought about a "bed box" where u can pull out both the built-in-beds. oki awsome.. the flame really gets the colour out on those stones..
So glad I found this! My 15 year old is the man of the house and we are hoping to do this together. I am debating doing this with natural gas or propane. I just like a cleaner look and it's sounds stupid but I don't want a propane tank hanging around. Is there a creative way to hide the propane tank? Did you attach the concrete top or is it just set in place? Maybe the propane tank could be set under the table top and just lift it off to change the tank? Does this sound possible? Just deciding if it's worth it to dig a trench and have a plumber run a gas line.
Hi Ivory! You and your son will do a great job :) It makes total sense to want to hide the tank. To be honest, I'd recommend building the top out of concrete like I did. You can do the sides, but it is a lot easier to do the sides out of wood. I've seen some pretty cool modifications by folks who've commented under the post on my website: www.diypete.com/outdoorgasfireplace The concrete top is just set in place, but you could use 100% silicon to help hold it if you'd like.
Those corners looking awfully sharp, but great job. Curious why you didn't just do a wood base and hide the propane tank inside it? I've done 2 concrete counters in my kitchen and am about to do a round patio table top. My 1st counter was a large T shaped pour in place bar height counter. What a job, very tricky and did not turn out like I wanted. The second was much easier and used a mold like yours. I used a diamond concrete polishing kit on both and look great (what I wanted for the kitchen), but for the patio top I think I'll leave it more natural like your with just a light sanding and sealant. Great video, thanks.
Thanks Mike! I think a wood base would look great and be quite a bit easier. Since lots of people see the video, I wanted to make sure it would be to code in as many places as possible by having the whole thing made out of non-combustible materials. Hence why it is all concrete. However, a lot of folks have modified it with a wood base. Cheers
+Matt Doll Thanks Matt! You guys make great products. It was a hit at the first barbecue this season. 3 of the guys at the bbq already are planning to build it as they had to add it to the honey do list after the wife saw it:)
Love this look and hope to make one some day. Dumb question - why can’t the propane tank be stored inside the table? It looked like you had it sitting outside of the table with hoses running in.
Hi! You would want to make sure the tank has plenty of clearance from the burner so that you didn't have any safety issues. But yes, many stores sell them with the ability to put a tank inside, so check out a few and see what to do to make sure it is done safely. Cheers!
Pete, you've inspired me to build more projects...but i hate working with concrete. I prefer tiling, what are your thoughts on building tables like this out of tiles?
Hi! You can absolutely build something similar and implement tile. Building a lower frame and then adding cement board and tile would be something that is definitely a possibility.
you mean, build frame out of wood. then put a thin cement board on top, then tile over top? Would something like this hold up over harsh winters you think? Also can u answer this question for me. PL3 construction adhesive, does it hold up in wet / winter areas if something is glued down with it on the exterior?
Hi! The T that you see is where the shutoff valve is built into the concrete base. The line from the propane tank does go directly to the burner, but the part that looks like a T is just where the valve junction is. Cheers!
Hey Pete, I just ran across your outdoor fire pit and I thought it was AWESOME!!! Have you ever seen a firepit like yours built with a wooden base, I'm looking to do a concrete top like yours but with a wooden base. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks
Sorry if you answered this question already but, can you recommend me an online store that sells that burner? Or something like that? That project looks awesome!
Hey Ragai! Mine wasn't quite high enough for a big tank, but I know a lot of people who have modified the height and put a tank inside. A lot of the ones you buy at stores have tanks inside as well. I am not sure on the exact code and would recommend doing some additional research to double check the best way to do it.
Thanks honestly not much water gets down there, if it rains though, the burner pan has drain holes. There is a deck underneath, so any water just goes between the cracks in the deck boards.
Hey Garrett! I want to get to an outdoor kitchen. It hasn't happened yet this year so it might not be until next summer. But if I can get one in I'll let ya know. Cheers!
+StetsonXD Hi! I have. I don't have a video using one yet, but I have some rubber strips to make the edges look like stone. I've done a few bars with the stone edges. Super easy to do.
Hey Pete, I am a Boy Scout in Birmingham, Alabama & I want to use your fireplace project as my Eagle Scout Project for a local non-profit nursing home/assisted living facility. Do you have any suggestions about "covering" the base with a stone facade? Would using a different type of base (instead of poured cement) be better if I am planning on covering with stones that will match an existing retaining wall that surrounds the outside area. And have you found any good looking covers for this, the location it's going is not covered & is surrounded by large trees. I am hoping to make it easy to clean/maintain for the seniors. Thanks. Jack
