May I add a little something? Not to step on your toes Bill... If you are starting out and you are using the cheap canvas boards that some craft stores sell, you will notice that sometimes the canvas boards will curve slightly. This is due to the canvas shrinking slightly and pulls the boards inwards. For the first layer especially, it is possible to pin the corners down, and then let it dry completely, then remove the pins and give it a couple more thin layers, and smooth to a nice finish, by using a smooth 800-1000grit sandpaper. Also if you don't have or can't get the spreader like Bill has, a squeegee will give you a good coverage. 😉 The more expensive canvases still shrink but just tighten, but don't buckle due to the frame. So i f you can use the framed ones to save you a bit more work, and sometimes frustration😉☺

Yes a squeegee works well too, although I found them harder to clean the residue :0 Canvas boards are definitely prone to warping. unfortunately ive seen them warp just over time. I cant even remember the last time I used a canvas board... been a while I do have some canvas pad ive done work on. but myself if im working that small.. well ill go to a synthetic like terraslate. Or i like the small clayboards a lot. Good to hear from you buddy! Tossed this one in even though I once said I wouldn't make a video about it.. yet i get that question enough I finally did. Got a HUGE painting to do right now .. we got a couple weeks to the 100 Day mark for Ava i expect to finally be back to weekly content.. we shall see its been a couple years :)

Before adding extra layers of gesso, I always put a pva sealer like matte acrylic medium, or even elmers glue, on the back side of my canvas boards as well as the front. Same with MDF boards. Ive found just one layer on the back makes them more rigid and less prone to warping. The extra layer of sealant in front also helps especially when working in oils.

When I Gessoed my canvas panels they warp somewhat, after the Gessoed panel is complete and sanded is there any way to flatten it?

I see you also paint on aluminum composite panels how do you prep them for painting (Gesso ) or do you? Thank you😊

On ACP I usually sand them with a grey or maroon scotchbrite pad designed for automotive paint sanding. Then i clean them with Sprayaway glass cleaner to remove any oils or dust residue. They will accept Oil, acrylics or airbrushing with either acrylics or urethane paint like that. I suspect they would do well with alchohol inks as well but I haven't used them for that as of yet. That is of course on the coated ACPs. Raw aluminum is a bit different. You're welcome!

Yes its definitely something to plan on prepping several in advance. That's why i just don't have time to get them done during the busy end of year season. But I do them for some paintings.. If I need it fast, and smooth and it needs to be canvas, I start looking at linen which is very pricey. Of course gessoboard, clayboard Aluminum comp and metal panels are all options as well. But by and large for "fine" art most customers expect canvas since custom framing for panels can add a lot to the end cost. Again often i paint on canvas as it comes, it just requires a bit more though on discipline controlling overspray, and understand erasing or removal techniques are difficult to achieve a clean look on them with :)

well clearly i dont always gesso mine. But it can make a significant difference. I tend not to tape and mask on canvas much. But sometimes I do want a super smooth canvas.
