I made an ultrasonic cleaner out of some jars and an electric sander I found on a recent dumpster dive safari . Well,.. it's more of an "ultrasonic-ish" vibrating cleaner really .... and it works bad a$$ ! Perfect for carburetor and other delicate motorcycle parts as I continue to work on the café racer !
Send me stuff !
Yes- I actually do send stickers out to those who contribute bits, parts, stuff for my projects and pretty much everyone who I talk about or thank in my videos. If you want to send me bike stuff, things for potential use in videos or tools to review etc. (or even just cash donations ! )
mail them to me:
Ichiban Moto
PO Box 1362

USA
Yes- you can just buy Ichiban Moto stickers - they are on ebay. If you don't have ebay/ paypal, you may mail me a minimum donation of $1 per sticker- along with your self addressed and stamped envelope. Stickers and donations are how I fund this fun !

Two absolutely great ideas for us DIY people who no doubt will use the palm sander and CLR ideas when they need to clean one carburetor per year and don't want to spend $100 for an ultrasonic unit. Thanks a ton!

Hey I have few tips as far as energy transmission to your part. So you took the cleaner off the bench which is a good idea. However, if you were to turn it upside down and put the sander in a heavy vice you would get the best energy transfer and here's why. When you hang the sander your still allowing the energy to move the sander instead of the jar and the part. If it were in a Vice the sander wouldnt move as much causing the easiest energy path to be to the part. An example if this in action would be a blacksmith using a heavy anvil vs a light one because the heavy one won't be as effected by the kinetic energy of the hammer. That makes the blacksmiths energy go more into the metal piece and less into the anvil. If anyone understands what I'm saying and can help elaborate that would be great.

Nathan- Absolutely agree. Some of the energy is lost moving the sander back and forth, not the jar. I think of using a sawzall. When the blade starts to hang up in the material the saw body then just oscillated back and forth. The energy transferred from the blade to the body. Cheers.

I don't have an ultrasonic and there isn't one in my immediate future but I have a sander so I'm game to try this. 2 things I'd suggest: I think by hanging the sander and not bracing it in a vise or something you're losing vibration energy as some goes into vibrating the vibrator. Also, I saw somewhere the idea of filling an ultrasound with plain water and placing your parts in containers filled with the cleaning solution. That way you don't have to change out the liquid all the time as you clean different parts. In addition to that information it was found that glass will transmit energy much better than plastic. Wish I could give credit to the YTer who showed that but it makes sense to me. Thanks for the demo!
@denmartos6019
@denmartos6019 3 года назад
I believe that you can get maximum vibration if the sander was kept stationary on something like a vise. Suspended on strings wont be as effective because the strings can act like a shock absorber. This is still the best diy ultrasonic cleaner I have seen so far.

Those larger containers are a game-changer for everything! We get those filled with assorted nuts or cat treats (slightly smaller size), and use them for storing things, cleaning things, sorting things, etc. I must have more than a hundred containers like that around the house filled with screws, nuts, small parts, even computer cables and such. I wish I'd thought to start using those years earlier.

The agitation does help, a scrubbing action and getting into tiny passages. Just using a solvent or cleaner on it's own works, but agitating the solution does increases its effectiveness. I have used this method in the past for small engine carburetors, but I didn't use a caustic chemical like CLR because it's harsh aluminum & plastic. I have used Xylene, mineral spirits, water with some lemon juice, or Marvel mystery oil as the cleaning solution.

Suggestion: Instead of using velcro as your way of attaching the sander to the lid I'd probably use an adhesive instead. The velcro likely dampens a significant amount of the vibration transferred from the sander to the jar. Might sound trivial, but he sharper pressure wave should clean way better.

Something a little milder to try as a good parts cleaning solution is 'simple green' or 'Dettol original' here in th UK. Like me, I'm sure a lot of people are wondering if this would work with a belt sander. I have one of those big bench mounted dealies with about 18" of useable belt space. Well, I tried it. It's a *lot* more complicated: I had to keep starting and stopping the belt, then manually lifting the jar from the end of the belt to the start, giving the motor another little blast and so on. You need to be *very* careful. My first test was with a carburettor thingy and that went well (but exhausting!). The second test was with a flywheel and I didn't stop it in time - the bucket+flywheel went clear through the partition wall and into my wife's kitchen. Suffice to say she got a shock!

Secondly my local tool shop insists that cable ties they stock are the same as zip ties. Are they just trying to make a sale and would cable ties work as well?

Peter Huskins To the best of my knowledge, aluminum is only available in america and parts of Canada, so you certainly need to import it to the UK. Yes, cable ties and zip ties are very similar and may easily be confused . Your shop should have a conversion table to identify the correct type by application.

Ichiban Moto I'm certain cable ties are metric; zip ties are standard. If it falls off, just use the other type and it usually works great!

Pretty sure that that stuff is not an acid it's alkaline. Am I wrong?
@pixelpatter01
@pixelpatter01 3 года назад
@@GunFunZS It's acidic, but alkaline solutions will dissolve both zinc and aluminum too. It's acidic enough to eat up zinc, but then so are cola soft drinks. Anytime you see bubbles coming up from the metal, that's hydrogen being generated by the acid reacting with metal. Sometimes a little reaction isn't bad, but whatever is gone is gone forever. Active Ingredients: Water CAS 7732-18-5, Lactic Acid CAS 79-33-4, Gluconic Acid CAS 526-95-4, Lauramine Oxide CAS 1643-20-5, Tripropylene Glycol N-Butyl Ether CAS 55934-93-5, Blue 1 CAS 3844-45-9, Yellow 5 CAS 1934-21-0.

@@pixelpatter01 Thanks for the detailed explanation. I will I'm well aware of the danger of alkaline stuff reacting to aluminum. I've worked many years on an aluminum boat and it is very obvious which substances do a lot of damage. I know that things like Pine-Sol and super clean are alkaline but they make very good carburetor cleaners for an aluminum carb and you'll see a very slight discoloration from the reaction.

I wonder what the cleaning effect is without the vibration, perhaps you could do 2 more pieces over the same amount of time, one without the vibration & one with, it'd be interesting to see the outcome?

I will give this cleaning option a try for certain. I didn't expect, when I searched u/s cleaning tips, to come across a TX500 project in the background. I had one 45 years ago and loved the thing to death, even though I lunched the motor twice in a couple of years. I'm older, wiser and more gentle on my bikes these days, I hope the project worked out well for you....✌
