How to work out angle cuts on decking boards, this is a video on how to mark angle cuts on a decking board installation. this scribing method allows me to easily mark the correct angle that i need to cut, to give me a lovely joint where the decking meets an angled wall.
making angle cuts an be a pain especially if you don't have any sort of tool that allows you to set the right degree of cut then transfer this angle to the decking board, however this method just requires a few basic tools and little working out to get the perfect angle cut on the board. this works for many applications from laminate flooring to fitting a bespoke shelf against an angled wall.
in this video i am using composite decking boards but as already mentioned this will work for wooden decking.
note : there needs to be enough extra length on the board being cut, so that once its cut to the angle and slid into place against the wall, there is still enough length on the board to be able to make the straight cut at the other end so it fits the space correctly. or it will end up short ! . its often easier to start the run of boards from the angle cut side so that the length of this decking board is less important.

What about your starter board? How to find the original angle? Same trick?

Buy yourself a $5 angle finder, the least expensive at the store. It's a lifesaver.

i find there is always something new to learn to help speed up a job. if it was an angle on the deck like say the decking had a diagonal edge i would just put all the boards down long and string the edge and cut them all at once. but cos there was a wall here i used this method. thanks for watching and commenting.

Curious, why use a full width board against the abutment? You can use a 4' level n save 4-5" on all your boards

I guess it would depend on the angel

Was just what I had to hand and was thick enough to be against the wall whilst covering the part of the board that can't touch the wall.

Yeah but if you have angle cuts at both ends of board?
@RustyDIY
@RustyDIY 2 года назад
in that case i use a tape and measure it, i don't think i know an easy way for this. i would space the board gap out then mark a square centre line and measure from this line in both directions top and bottom of each cut. or if i had offcuts that was the same angle id use them, cut one end then measure to where the other angle cut needed to be. sorry if i explained this horribly its hard to describe i should make a video one day haha

Out of curiosity, why is the spacer required? Is it just the geometry?.. or due to the hidden fastener being in the way?
@RustyDIY
@RustyDIY Год назад
i used a bit of board as a spacer so the bit i wanted to cut would sit flat and parallel to the boards laid down so that when its cut it will be the right angle, if i laid it on top and didn't make sure it was nice and straight to the boards the angle might be wrong when i put it in place, if that makes sense
