As someone who has shot on 16mm before and graded it in davinci, I think you guys are pushing the look a bit too far. It may come down to taste here, but if you want to actually emulate the film stock instead of created a final graded look you should tone down the entire thing by about 25%. You can tell in a lot of these clips the the colors are getting too saturated and clipping (probably because of the 8-bit footage) and the shadows feel lifted. Film CAN look like this, but in actual movies the look is not pushed this far so that it is easier on the audience's eyes. I see this a lot with digital emulations where the colorists push the look farther than it should go to overcompensate for it being DSLR/mirrorless footage.

Hey quick follow up is there a way to change the CST to the correct input for every single clip so i dont have to go in manually selecting each clip and changing my input color space along with input gamma. This would save me a ton of time and still my first day using davinci, thanks so much!
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios 2 года назад
Hey Jake, yes there is! If all the clips require the same CST you can save the node tree you’ve created with the CST settings you’ve chosen then save that as a powergrade in itself by using the powergrades tab in the Colour page. We’ve made a tutorial on how to do this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j-qRovmIDrU.html

@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios 2 года назад
It works in both studio and free but of course you won’t be able to use Denoise or film grain in the feee version. However you can download free grain overlays and import then into your timeline. We’re actually making a video asset class with free film grains which we’ll hopefully release by the end of the year which may be helpful!
@mychannel-vz8rv
@mychannel-vz8rv 2 года назад
amazing tutorial, just wondering why didn't you touched the halation part ? it plays one of the main role in this grading. like if the light on face is high the halation goes way to red and you should've showed how to adjust it less or high according to the requirement.
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios 2 года назад
Hey firstly thank you!! Also we completely forgot to go over halation until after we uploaded the video 😅 because as you say it’s v much key in film emulation. There’s halation that is automatically added using the powergrade but we just completely forgot to talk about it. We do apologise. We might make a RU-vid post just to show how to adjust the halation

This was very helpful, fantastic video. i have an issue when i use the cineprint, it completely destroys the footage, comes out looking like a grainy oversaturated mess. I'm a complete novice to davinci resolve and filmmaking hence i can't figure out how to solve this. i shoot in Blackmagic raw on my pocket 4k. what would be the inputs for the CST. would love any sort of advice. great tutorial
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios 2 года назад
Hey! Firstly thank you, we’re glad you found it helpful:) for your black magic 4 are you shooting on Gen 1,2, or 3 colour space. Dependedining on these put black magic design 4 Film Gen 1 or 2/3 into the input colour space. Then for input gamma select black magic designs 4K film. And this should give you a shoot base. Then use the exposure and WB to adjust the look to your liking. We hope this helps!

@meliorstudios 2 года назад
Hey Ryan! Cineprint 16 can work with any camera, Tom used GH5 as an example as that’s the camera he used. But for this tutorial we used clips from our Sony A7iii. You can even use cineprint16 on iPhone footage if you wanted too. The eos m is a great camera, especially for filming everyday things

You guys are simply so awesome!😌Quick question tho.....do you think itu709 matrix is better than s gamut?
@meliorstudios

For the A7iii yes, as the magenta tint is less harsh and so with ITU.709 it's easier to work with in post. But for cameras like the A7siii or Fx3 or better S-gammut is perfectly fine!

We’re glad you enjoyed it!! And for HLG profiles, for colour input use Rec.709 and colour gamma also use Rec.709

So i dont have the full version... Is there a way i can get rid of the overlay? Like which effects will i be forfieting due to not having the full version?
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios 2 года назад
Hey man! To get rid of the watermarks all you have to do is get rid of the Denoise and film grain nodes! You can always add film grain using film grain overlays that you add into your timeline on top Of your actual clips

Hi, how would you approach HLG3 footage shot in bt2020 color space?
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios 2 года назад
for both the input colour space and input gamma, use Rec.709. then leave the outputs as they are (Arri alexa & Arri log)

Hello! Nice work! I am soo thinking of buying the power grade. I already bought Juan Maleras Kodak Power grade and Film convert and I am still not achieving the look I am looking for. Maybe I am just bad 😂 I got a question: how did you change the magenta colour in the lips 😅?
@meliorstudios
@meliorstudios Год назад
Hey Yasemin, This is the only film emulation powergrade we've used and it's worked a treat for us in enabling us to create the look we wanted. And with lips usually being more saturated than the rest of the skin you can use the the qualifer to create a mask on the lips, selecting the magenta areas, then simply shift the hue towards the oranges. You can do this all when selecting the entire skin to shift the colours away from magenta. Another way is to use the colour warper and shift the red points towards the yellow

Hey. Your footage looks so good. Im a bit new to davinciresolve but I would like to know how to you get the so much space on your screen? I mean, when I open the color page, everything is so big and crammed I could hardly see all of the nodes. I'm new to this, what corrections can I do to make the node and the playback window space show up bigger?

You don’t need it! You just have to turn the film grain node off and it should work
