How to make any bike an AUTOMATIC

Are you trying to turn your bike into an automatic? An auto clutch might be the way to go. There are a couple of different companies that make auto clutches including EFM (which is what we used on this bike) and Rekluse. Do auto clutches ride the same though?
Did you know that your ape hangers handlebars might be illegal?

I remember as a little kid, 60 years ago, the first motorcycle my dad taught me to ride was a Honda 50 with no clutch but had 3 gears. I think that is where this type of setup started. Great to see someone finally did this with more bikes. Thanks for sharing. Take care and God bless you all.

One of my favorite channels to watch, I'm so looking forward to buying a bike again (when money presents itself). I used to ride off-road when I was younger, then bought a Honda Rebel 450 in my thirties as a starter but soon figured out down the line that I couldn't ride due to a work injuries sustained by wear and tear on my back. Now in my forties and have had spinal surgery, I feel that urge that never went away, that dream of just going for a rip.

Well, any motorcycle is perfect for packed city driving, but I can see how this makes it easier, especially for people that don't want to bother becoming experts with the clutch. It does give you that peace of mind that you're not going to stall, which is great to avoid dangerous situations.

@@Smart.Potato I think you missed the point. In southeast asia automatic scooters are a luxury. The majority of people there drive scooters with the style of transmission in this video. Its not exactly the same as the rekluse clutch, but no two manufacturers make the same transmissions regardless... The one used in Asia is a rip off of an old Honda semi automatic transmission from the 50's, so not the rekluse but close in principle.

For those wondering how it works and rides I have one in my (just stolen this week) 2018 sv650. The one I had was a rekluse. When you put it in gear it wont stall, engagement to shift is min 2500 rpm ideally in the 4500 or above. In order to shift you have to blip the throttle in order to get a smooth shift, it works the same on the down shifts. It takes a bit to get used to and get the timing right. I'm now looking at the efm because they dont make a rekluse for the bike I wanna get but others that I've talked that have used both say it's very similar. I have to use one since I lost the use of my left arm. Watch out for those false neutrals during break in. I'll try to post some vids sometime that show me riding with it.
@amp2amp800

Cool. But its not really automatic right? You're still shifting with the foot, right? I'm missing a left leg above the knee, so that would be an issue for me. I currently ride a Guzzi I-Convert (outfit) and have a Honda NC750X DCT as my two wheeler. I should consider myself blessed to still be riding, but I still drool over the new models every year and want to dream about having a wider choice. Hope you get/got your bike back.

@@amp2amp800 it's not like the dct, you still shift using your foot, just don't have to depress the clutch, or hold it in. Hey Sean, I had a Kawasaki KLR 650 that at the dealer I had them install a Rekluse clutch on it. The reason I had it installed is I had a brain tumor when I was 13 months old and it affected my right side. I can use my right arm but pulling in the front break was a no go. I used a hydraulic clutch leaver that I bought that was for a 2008 Goldwing for the front break and I removed the original clutch leaver all together and installed the goldwing clutch leaver on left handlebar and also put the twist grip for the gas on left handlebar. I rode it for eight years. I bought a new Honda CTX 700 DCT ABS in 2015. I moved the gas and front break leaver to the left side and I riding that to this day. I just wish it had a little bit more power and a shaft drive. So the people that are out there that an automatic motorcycle is stupid idea. I say your stupid there are people out there that want to ride like me, oh I forgot i've been riding since I was 10 yrs old.

When you are shifting this rig with out using the clutch lever, you need to synchronize the engine speed with the gear you are selecting. Shifting up, back off the throttle for a quick blip. Shifting down, rev the engine for a quick blip. Lower gears are harder to synchronize and higher gears are ultra easy. Put a little up pressure on the shift lever and when you back off the throttle the gear change is seamless and feels automatic. I like mine though they have become quite expensive!

It uses centrifugal action for the low end and first gear. Don't need the clutch for taking off, but absolutely recommended to use clutch at normal shift intervals, and certainly to downshift. However, as you shift down to first to stop (as you would naturally), you can let the clutch go and remain in gear, as you will not move until the centrifugal parts are engaged by faster revs. One big benefit, other than the complete lack of stall at a stop or taking off, is the clutch lever has a very lightweight pull now, as the plates will assist in shifting.
@ripley_redacted5188
@ripley_redacted5188 2 года назад
Is it fool-proof? Are you really completely unable to stall the bike - that would be perfect for me ffs. Also, Im unsure about that second part, whenever you're coming to a stop with the centrifugal clutch: would you just downshift immediately to 1st without waiting to slow down inbetween gears then after you let go of the clutch does it just wait to kick into gear when youre down to the appropriate speed? I'm new to all this so any clarification is much appreciated!

Moped style centrifugal clutch while still having the hand clutch. Pretty cool idea, especially for older Goldwingers. Still get to use the clutch while moving so it is the best of both worlds. If you can customize the spring tension to have it launch at the start of the power band....win, as long as replacement slipper clutch plates for it are cheap and easy to install.

If anyone is concerned with the reliability of the EFM Auto Clutch, my brother has an EFM Auto Clutch on his 07 Yamaha Road Star 1700. He bought his bike brand new in 2007 and had it installed. He has cerebral palsy so he couldn't operate a clutch. His only choice for riding for years was ol Hondamatics, which isn't a bad choice (they are alot of fun, 78 CB750A was my first bike) but he always wanted a big v twin cruiser. EFM made that dream come true for him. He has had zero issues with the auto clutch, and or the bike since he bought it. Just does typical maintenance and rides. I've ridden it several times myself. It's alot of fun. Highly recommend the EFM Auto Clutch, or a 1700 road star.

I have a rekluse in my Vulcan S. It is great for stop and go traffic. It is hard to stall out on,but not impossible. In cold weather I have stalled out with it, but I was able to roll on 1st without any clutch modulation. The only complaint with it is that the friction zone is incredibly small. Reason I bring this up is on a twitchy, high revving motor it can cause for a very choppy ride when doing slow speed manuvers. I prefer a traditional manual clutch to the rekluse, but for stop and go traffic a rekluse is quite handy.

The clutch works quite well however constant adjustments, slipping under heavy load and short disk life are the downsides. Also on the Harleys with MMD reverse the gear will grind more than normal due to the viscous coupling of this clutch is more defined than a manual clutch.

Before I got too old, I rode a bike for years and the only time I used my clutch was to take off. I never used the clutch going up the gears and I got smooth and very quick gear changes.

this is crazy. do you still have to squeeze the clutch lever if you wanna change gear or you don’t have to??

I love this video! I wonder if this can be done to a Ninja 400... I found a 3 year old video a guy made about something similar. Have you ever heard of this? ShiftFX I guess it gives you the choice to do fully automatic, or semi automatic. I'm disabled and can't shift, I had a Ridley for years (years and years) I'd buy the Ninja 400 if it was automatic.. :)

I’ve never heard of this before but that’s cool. So I could turn any manual bike into an automatic? Wow! That’s really awesome. Who would be able to install it and make it automatic though?

Very interesting given that you recently took us for a blast on the Goldwing & that bike, correct me if im wrong, is an auto, so guess theres a place for it especially if your sitting in traffic a lot, im an occasional, fair weather only rider who heads mainly for uninhabited country lanes lol but very interesting none the less

Do you still have the friction zone with this? This would make low speed cornering and U turns difficult I think

What ever gets more people riding motorcycles. I'm all for. But if you're shifting it. It's not an automatic. Twist and go this is not.

Maybe not, but if you have ever felt how hard a Stratoliner or Roadliner clutch is , your see how much this could stop the cramping in the hand.

You still need to use the clutch with a recluse auto clutch when shifting.

@@Jay-jb2vr Yes. Only thing any auto clutch does is keep you from stalling the bike when stopping or starting.
@skoVBA2
@skoVBA2 4 года назад
Sry bud but that's not true. You put it in gear and twist the throttle, when you want to shift you blip the throttle and shift up. You do the same on the down shift.

According to Rekluse you still use the clutch for shifting as per: "Unless you have mastered clutchless shifting, the clutch lever is still used when shifting gears"

Sean, that is freaking awesome. Too bad Ridley Motorcycles didn't make it that way back in the day.( so long ago, I forget how many shift points they had.... before HD took them down over the hydra-glide branding issue). It kind'a reminds me of someone on a Burgman 650 doing the sport mode(?) with its DCT. So question(s) here; Does the clutch still operate normally if you want it to, and did you try it on a good hill from a full stop ? I ask, because that's where most stalls occur, ( wrong gear, not enough rev's, etc). Stay safe and ride on. W

On most bikes you only need a clutch to start from a dead stop. I shift my Harley up and down without using the clutch. My R1 is even smoother shifting up and down without using the clutch.

Do you have to be in the appropriate gear for the speed? I read up on it a bit and it's rpm based. Almost like a slip differential. No friction zone. Excellent for suicide shifters and maybe widow maker shifts

Rekluse FAQ says you should still use the clutch lever for gear changes.
@dawidos117
@dawidos117 4 года назад
Rekluse recommends. They say: “Shifting transmission remains unchanged (clutch lever use is recommended for shifting)” and “The Rekluse auto clutch is designed to eliminate clutching when starting and stopping. The auto clutch provides smooth acceleration without loss of power. It also prevents stalling when riding at slower speeds or maneuvering through traffic. You retain full control of shifting and can continue to use the clutch lever if you like”, so it’s pretty good idea, IMO 🙂

I'm asking 2900.00 OBO but i will let it go for 2500.00. Do you sell bikes on consignment?
