Any tips on playing riffs in the style of Blackened? I'm decent at tremolo picking but I always get stuck on those downpicks from the 6th to 5th string
@efolik3579
@efolik3579 4 года назад
Just keep practicing
@KarriHanninen
@KarriHanninen 4 года назад
You want to practice in a few different ways depending on your current skill level: 1. Slow and continuous alternation between the 2 notes (open E and A 7th fret), practice until you dont have put any focus to do it 2. Speed bursts with few notes, after you got the motion down you should do a pattern of 70707 or similar at a high tempo with a long pause between the reps

I will hijack this Blackened question and ask how to mute the 3 thinnest strings while doing the fast tail part of the main riff? I mean the part played on frets 1-3 where the E, A and D strings are palm muted. Should I adjust my right hand so that its side mutes all the strings or should I just leave the thinnest strings untouched and wish that they don't ring too much underneath? Happy Friday from Finland
@KarriHanninen
@KarriHanninen 4 года назад
You can flatten out your left hand index finger to mute the thinner strings which are ringing in the ending fill in main riff

@joaopereira2096
@joaopereira2096 4 года назад
Thats a tricky one, seeing hetfields right hand playing it live twice as fast is mindbending. Anyway I just practiced that --7(a)-7(a)-0(e)- triplet until I manage to get a really loose/relaxed feel without worrying about how fast Im going, speed it up afer that and repeat with focus on tightness and staying in time hope this helps

Man you're on fire. Two vids same day. Nice tips, but I have also one question. Where would you place the speed on your last advice? First learn notes then tone but where speed 🤔
@KarriHanninen
@KarriHanninen 4 года назад
After learning the notes you can start working on other areas which require focus, such as the tone and speed building :)
@gherardomagnini1067

@Yupppi

Maybe worthwhile to mention about vibrato is also that some people prefer going around the resting position, up and down (physically) and some prefer to do the vibrato bends in only one direction. It can be used to taste in different applications, which one suits the best because they sound slightly different. I found, and it was ashamedly recent notice, that the best thing you can do when learning and practicing is recording your playing. You might play something for years and think that "yeah, cool, I got it" but when you record it, you notice that it's really loose and lazy sounding. Then get to practicing it and getting more focused on how you actually sound.
@KarriHanninen
@KarriHanninen 4 года назад
For vibrato in bends you can go around the target pitch but I havent yet seen anyone do 2 directional vibrato on a fretted note :o
@Yupppi
@Yupppi 4 года назад
@@KarriHanninen Back in the day when I was a beginner, I knew a guy who was actually flaming guitarists who do unidirectional vibrato :D the 2-directional vibrato creates a "rounder" effect, a bit like a sine wave in my opinion. Fits softer and smoother stuff. Unidirectional has that sharper edge feel that fits metal well for having that "aggressive" tone, especially when you do it fast and pick hard. The 2-directional vibrato that goes through the "root" note is at least fun enough to try, if nothing else!
