Omg I just cut some branches off of my willow tree, keep them moist bcause I wanted to replant them couldn’t find a place in my garden so I’m definitely will be trying to make some charcoal since my son is an artist and I myself enjoy drawing quite often ❤Thanks for sharing this interesting method And good info!!!!

On one of my charcoal sticks roasts, I opened the can too soon (still warm) and the whole contents burst into flame.

Have been making artist's charcoal for a year or two now as per your suggestions but this year we have a problem with the sticks we have made. Whilst the sticks have 'cooked' perfectly, when used for drawing they feel 'gritty' or scratchy as they move over the paper. Some sort of crystals in the wood? Any ideas anyone?

What kind of wood did you use, and how long did you let it char for? Density of the wood is going to matter, and if it doesn’t run for long enough it can have little bits of unburned wood inside that would feel scratchy.
