Just purchased a kit for the Assyrian bow from Dave and it is on its way to New Zealand. It is for my son's birthday and is a surprise. I intend to assemble the bow with a little help from my woodwork savvy son in law. Really excited to start this amazing project and hand the completed bow to my son. He has no idea what I'm getting him and he will be over the moon when he receives his completed bow. I own a farrier's rasp and I must say that this is a great tool for this sort of work. Thanks again Dave, I'm always amazed and in awe of your skill and fantastic products. There is nothing on the market like this, at this price. Flaxen Saxon.

Hey Dave. I've got a great suggestion to improve the longevity of these bows. A suggestion that will help to prevent set. If you use another bamboo slat that's fully tempered on both the inside of the bamboo and rind side of the bamboo. If tempered well. Then if this bamboo is used as the belly and a thinner bamboo slat is used as the back. Then the rind side of the bamboo Wil combat compression and the rind side of the bamboo is good under tension as the back of the bow. So then the back and belly should just be made thinner. It might not change the efficiency or it might..maybe it will be more springy because the wood can be made thinner. But the positive is that the bow will last, because you won't get that crushing of the fibres under compression..even if heat treated as one single piece of wood. It will still loose its efficiency. Just a suggestion that I'm about to try out. Have you perhaps tried this out before?

Dude, still blows my mind how you’re able to sell kits like this. So awesome. Hey, I thought you sinewed your kits though? This is what the customer wants - a bow-building experience blended in with a finished product. You’re up there with Thad, Billy, Ryan, and all The best of the best youtube bowyers. Cheers.

It’s inspiring watching your videos, Sir. Would it be possible to get some more dimensions on the bow and it’s parts? I already have all the materials and tools to complete the bow itself. Thank you in advance for your help.

It’s a great build and there’s nothing like a bamboo bow light in hand light for its mass but it takes more set than most being only a grass I think the only way long-term way to get around that is to sinew back and then you’ve got compression problems that’s why they horn belly them anyway nice build
@toravnerflyr6911

Yes, they are fun to build and light. No. I'm saying people with little experience and patience are going to experience failure. Dave knows what he's doing. There is nothing wrong with the bow's design, bamboo is simply to fickle to be used alone by a novice. Still a great platform to learn the fundamentals of building one. I'm sure there are successes. Fun to try, but I'm tapping out. I'd rather shoot than build because I have a day job and prefer riding the motorcycle. Am I saying it can't be done? No. Not for me. My experience: I'm not a boyer. After making 6 of these I've got one that hasn't failed, because it's 25lbs, which isn't going to work for me. Sourced a variety of different bamboo, because $69 a pop for 2 limbs that failed isn't cost effective. Quality Bamboo is as expensive as wood and costlier to ship. Bamboo is strong yet splinters and cracks easily under stress. You've really got to baby the sanding. It has to be sanded completely flat/level on the belly or it will split (it's arc'd). That channel cannot exist (That's stated in the video). This results in lower and lower poundage. I've noticed while bamboo makes a decent backing, solo is a no go unless it's got a sinew backing. Hide really does nothing to prevent breaking. That can drive the cost up another $60-120 if you purchase pre-processed sinew and that doesn't prevent splitting. The only one I have with high poundage is still being tillered, bamboo backed, ipe belly for compression. It's likely a 90lb bow without a lot of work. I'm tapping out.

Hi Dave. How does one process bamboo for the core of a laminated bow. In your other video to make high efficiency bow. Do you process the bamboo yourself that you use for the core? Does a person literally just strip it off by cutting into the wood from the top like maybe 3mm thick and then peeling it off gliding the knife down, then sanding it down to 2mm? Also should the strips be heat treated before using it for the bow core? Or can the strips be used as is after splitting? I can't find this process anywhere on the internet. I'm curious to see how its done so that I don't waste a lot of bamboo in the process of trying it out the wrong way. Thanks.

loving that there are natural bows in this style around. Very interested in a kit, though I'm a bit concerned about my own ability to properly shape the Siyahs. Also how quiet are the bows when shooting as opposed to say a longbow? Thinking of hunting and reducing noise.
@MeadLongbows
@MeadLongbows 2 года назад
Very quiet, I've used only these bows for hunting during the last 8 yrs. No problems and never needed string silencers. Shaping the siyahs is easier than you think, a rasp or file and sandpaper and your done

Just out of curiosity, why do you leave the gap between the limb ends were they mount to the handle?
@sherrattpemberton6089
@sherrattpemberton6089 2 года назад
its so that when the limbs flex. That force is distributed across a greater area, as opposed to being focused on a single point. If that force was focused on a single point - that increases the chance of the bow breaking there
