Watched the video and read the comments, then watched again...she was talking about the returns which are the side seams she was sewing when she said she cut the lining 8” “shorter” than the fabric - and yes she could have said narrower or talked about width! Her video is very well done and I appreciate her instructions! Thank you!
I have been struggling to finish the task of making curtains on my own, so my uninspired self decided to search for a video, much to my surprise this very insightful and clear video, showed my what i was doing in my own curtain-making and I was able to finish the and hang my very own curtains, thank you very much for this Jean French!
I'm about to make us some block-out curtains, its been sometime since I have done any sewing so I decided to watch this video, I found her instructions were very clear to understand, thank you so much, I look forward to sewing again. Melbourne, Victoria
Hi Lauren Just wanted to thank you for your time in showing me how to sew on the Thermal curtains. This video will definitely come in handy. I ordered the wrong size curtains for my front room, as they were too long, I had a choice to return them to the shop or order the right one. But as I love sewing, decided to add a thermal layer to them and then cut the bottom. My parents had heavy thick curtains which were older than me. So a good twenty years which we learnt to hand wash every year. So I’ll be making my own curtains (with thermal lining) in future thanks to your tutorials! Thank you!
I'm an experienced dressmaker but never done curtains. My best friend asked me to make her some curtains for a caravan. Your tutorial was so easy to follow and the finished product was amazing. Thank you.
THANK YOU!! Iso hope you see my comment. This is by far the most detailed and easy to follow instructional video. I've watched at least 10 other videos and printed out measuring/sewing instructions from various website. I threw it all away after seeing your video. My first panel came out perfect...3 more to go! Thanks again!
I got a bit confused doing this, so maybe it needs a bit of clarification. The lining is not 8 inches shorter (i.e. in the vertical) but is actually 8 inches LESS WIDE (i.e. horizontally). I cut mine 8 inches shorter and then couldn't work out what was going on when you pinned them!
Have been putting off making my daughters curtains for a year. Thanks to your excellent tutorial I've made them in 3 hours, they look fantastic and she will be utterly delighted. I'm going to wrap them up for her birthday.
Loved this video, so clear and precise giving step by step clear instructions, useful tips along the way. Very professional and giving me confidence to have a go at making curtains. Thank you so much.
Jean, you are a diamond! Such generosity with your expertise and the clarity of your instruction gave me the confidence to pull off making my first curtains. Thank you!
Brilliant, hadn't made curtains for years, got a new sewing machine and a naked window! This lady is fantastic, my Mum thought the curtains had been made professionally!
What an excellent video! Making my own curtains seems so much less daunting now. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this very informative video!
I love the cleverness of getting the returns by sewing the lining fabric, which is 4” of inches smaller, each side, then the drapery fabric, to the edges of the drapery fabric on each side. The hack of then marking the centre of each, and then aligning the marks, and sewing from the centre marks out. So much easier then hemming everything and still risking the two fabrics not being flat together. Thea 🐨🌻
Thank you so much for this brilliant demonstration!! I made two pairs of curtains that turned out lovely and I had never made curtains before. You are a fantastic tutor!!
I absolutely love your video. I have made 5 pairs of lined curtains in the past year or so, and I could not have done it without your wonderful instruction. I am getting ready to finish the 6th pair of curtains so for good measure, I watched your video again. Now I feel as if I'm ready to finish this last pair! Thank you so much.
This video was just perfect for me as an absolute beginner. Using the clear instructions in the video I’ve managed to make my first pair of lined curtains and I’m very happy with the finished product. Thanks Moving Curtains.
Thankyou for this wonderful tutorial. I've never lined curtains before and my daughter asked me to make blackout curtains for my 1st grandchild's bedroom. I was nervous but your very clear instructions made it easier than I thought it was going to be. Thankyou very much.
Thank you so much for this. I have just made my very first lined curtain. Your explanation and demo was clear, concise and easy to listen to. It has given me the confidence to make more curtains. Of course my curtain isn’t quite as lovely as yours and there is room for improvement in my efforts but the point is that you have given me the confidence to do more and I'm very grateful.
Hello Adrian. I just wanted to let you know that, in all of RU-vid, yours is the very best, if not the only, instructional video on lining draperies. I found it to be very helpful. I am buying some 100% cotton Indian block printed tapestries and will be turning them into curtain panels. I've used them for curtains in the past and found that they sun ruins them in short order, so they need to be lined. I've never done that before. I'm so glad that you took the time to make this video to help us with what is a very confusing process for a beginner. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Hi Michaela thanks for your feedback we wanted to make something that people could follow. Jean is brilliant at what she does and we had great fun both writing the script and filming. Our team consisted of Jean French Natasha Sial and myself. Glad you found it useful.
I have come back to this video every couple of years as it reminds me every time I make curtains of the simple and effective method that Jean explains.
So glad I watched this. Have made lots of curtains before but these are for a special room and I wanted them to be professional....such clear and precise instruction and some great advice.
Great tutorial, succinct, informative, and well delivered. Makes it so easy for the novice to understand. Now making curtains to this standard. Chuffed!! five star!
I love this video, am a total beginner and my only comment would be that it’s not clear to the layman that you should sew on the wrong side. I went to turn everything the right only to learn that I sewed my 230cm long curtains inside out so now I have to pick it all apart and start again. But I will be following the video again. Thank you fur taking the time to make it
Excellent tutorial! I have watched it over and over again like someone said earlier on! Great! I am going to do my own first lined curtains now! Thanks again!!!
Very nice ..clear tutorial....I made them with plies that I stitched . I was a bit scared to make lined curtains ,but with this tutorial ..piece of cake
I have made many curtains over the past 35 years but never done professionally looking linings, brilliant tutorial. I am making some curtains for my sister and feel confident now in doing the linings thank you ....
hi; actually it can also be used for doors; you can see a lot of images of it and other models too, when clicking on chekout button at the bottom ; if you want of course :) have a nice days
Hi. My first ever attempt at making curtains and this seems very straight forward - well, until I actually start, no doubt!! I've watched this quite a few times now. Thanks for a great tutorial. I do have one question though...sewing down the sides...you stop before the 'bottom'...how far before please? Thanks again Steve
Excellent Video I made my very First pair of Curtains using this tutorial for a customer only a few weeks ago and everyone said they looked really proffeshional I was really pleased I want to do all curtains for my house now Thank you
Thank you so much. I like the way the side of the curtain looks hiding the thread inside, I will do it that way from now on.Also the hem by hand is much better.
I’d kind of worked out my own way of making lined curtains, not altogether successful or foolproof - but this is brilliant, thank you very much for your expert help.
Thank you so much for this I have just finished my first lined curtain following your instructions and it was so easy! One more to do tomorrow then I'll have a pair!
Thank you for your great video... I've watched it through again and again to understand everything. My first set of curtains look brilliant and I'm just starting my next pair. Really enjoying making them my own, and they come out really well following your instructions step by step.
Thanks so much for sharing this information. Your instructions are very clear and most helpful. I’ve made a lot of curtains in my time but it’s good to know the professional way to make them for a good finish.
do NOT try to follow Jean French's instructions without reading the correction by Jane Doe, below, about cutting the lining. You must cut the lining 8" NARROWER - not shorter. Watch the video closely and you'll see that's what JF has done. Your panel won't work otherwise. Just a slip of Jean French's tongue. Thanks, Jane Doe, for the correction.
Your video is educational and straight forward. Some clarification as far as "return" or other terminology as you talk would be helpful. Other than that I look forward to creating my own curtains.
thankyou for this i have never made curtains before and i have know made new curtains for my caravaan and am so chuffed with myself once again thankyou
Love this, other than the instruction "divide the measurement by the width off the fabric, aren't we doing those calculations to work out the width of the fabric? So how will we know what to divide if by if we don't yet know how much fabric is needed? Some really simple
This , I think, contains a huge error. Jean French says to cut the lining 8 inches shorter. If you cut the lining that short it won't reach the hem ! Surely she means cut the lining 8 inches NARROWER ? This then gives you the returns. It took me two viewings to work out what she meant . Pretty important if you are new to curtain making ! Other than that is is a wonderful video and taught me a new technique on the heading tape.
Thank you Jane! As a complete novice in curtain making I followed the instructions to the letter and made the lining shorter - I did wonder if that was right at the time, but thought hey ho I've never made them before so perhaps some magic will happen - well of course it didn't. Resulting in a wasted curtain. Then I read Jane's comment and all is now good in my little world. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Why didn't I read these comments first?!? AAAHHHH!!! I've just cut my curtains according to what Jean says in the video, and now my lining has been cut completely wrong :( I liked Jean's curtains for how professional they look, but now I have to follow a different video that does not look as nice.
I'm sure she meant 8 inches on the width not 8 inches on the length which would give a return of about 2 inches on each side when sewn.. That's how it looks in the video and the lining length is much longer than the main fabric - from memory about 5 inches.
Whew! Am I very glad that I read your comment before attempting to make my curtains. A big thank you! I do think this is one of the best instructions for making curtains, because I love her helpful hints. Thank you, again, for helping this novice sewer 😃
I have this technique down to a perfect match did a practice one following all instructions and it worked made three sets since thank you for all your help June very appreciated and a fabulous video well done
I just made some really nice bedroom curtains (even if I do say so myself). Thank you, I would never have been able to make them without your tutorial. The only part I had a problem with was the header tape. Yours looked like it was doubled over at the ends and mine were not so I had to stitch it closed to stop the hook falling out of the end ones. I doubled up at the ends of the second curtain I made and this one was fine. Thanks again :)
Thank you for the tutorial. It caused me to think for myself as I learned.🏆 I have followed and made new curtains. I also amended heavy curtains I made previously as the lining was not 8” shorter than fabric and there was no return’……😎
Hi the clarity of your video is brilliant. Thank you. I've to make two sets of 12ft curtains (floor to ceiling) one set needs lining. The other set is for dress only for over the bed. Can you give any tips on sewing with incredibly slippery fabric please? I'm fairly new to sewing and so far have only made clothes. Thank you.
Arrr, bless you .... thanks. Brilliant. Lovely to see handcrafted things. Everyone with money want handmade evertthing as well. Thats where the wonga is.
Excellent video. Thank you! I see a comment about an "error" of shorter vs narrower. I understood it meant from side to side because I had seen that technique in something else. I have to have things in my hands to understand things sometimes so cannot picture the length yet. I thought linings were also shorter top to bottom. Will watch again. Excellent presentation though! More sewing videos.
I wondered where I went wrong lining my curtains - makes total sense now (although the mistake makes a cream stripe down one side of the curtains that looks intentional). Now I know how to do it properly I can have another go - I sure have time 😔😷. Thank you for the video :)
Great tutorial thank you. I haven't made lined curtains before, lots of curtains, but always thought lining would be hard, but it looks OK. Thank you. What do you do when the window is 240cm wide? Most fabric is 140cmor 150cm wide. Do you stitch together two drops to make the width? Or is there a better way?
Hi Jean. This is a great video. Thank you. My only area of confusion is - is the calculation for how much fabric you need, giving you the amount needed for 1 half of the curtain pairs? Or is it the total amount needed for both pairs and then you cut in half?
I have viewed this several times and notice that the lining is not sewn all the way from top to bottom on the sides and want to know how many inches short of the bottom of the curtain you stopped. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks.
Hello again I have just been watching the video back to see what was said. The hem is folded over to match the width of the return it looks like to me and the lining is about an inch or two shorter. I think the reason for not sewing the whole length of the bottom of the lining is to ensure free movement of the fabric to avoid puckering...It's a long time since we did this so I am just going from what I see. I hope this helps.
Hi, very nice video! I was wondering why the lining at the bottom remains loose, only stitched at the corners? Doesn't it separate and make funny looking pouches as it folds once hanged? Again, I love your method, so neat and perfect! :)
I've never made anything since I left School & that was only a Cookery Apron LOL, hopefully if I follow your instructions that are very clear & helpful I will be able to make curtains for my Motor Caravan, I'll let you know how I get on or not LOL. Jackie T x
i know this is an old video, but I just started planning draperies for my bedroom and have fallen toally in love with the drapery fabric you used. Is it possible to find something similar, perhaps a description of this style of print? Great video, but moves a little fast for beginners (me!).
