Happy New Year. Another year gone and here we are starting a new one........... Let's love each other more!
I didn't realise that I had never done a video on how to make Battenberg Soap. After many requests, here it is.
Please make sure you take all the necessary precautions, when making soap. You will find them in a google search.
RECIPE USED
WITH RECIPE:- A nice simple easy to use fool-proof recipe, that does not stick to your moulds, (ONE THAT I USED OFTEN) :- This recipe will make HALF the quantity amount I have in this video. Recipe as follows:-
1050 grams x Solid Coconut Oil
870 grams x Sustainable Solid Palm Oil
750 grams x Sunflower/Canola Oil
850 grams x Olive Oil (I use Extra Virgin, but you can use any)
175 grams x Castor Oil
125 grams Shea Butter
6% SUPERFAT
Water x 800grams (increase your water if you prefer, FULL WATER is 1260.60g )
Lye x 532.82 (you can round it up to 532g)
(ALWAYS add Lye to water)
Any marzipan type fragrance will work for this soap.
Usage at 1oz per kilo
Use this recipe to make the yellow and pink insert colours.
Leave overnight, un-mold, then cut as per video.
You will then need to make another full batch, to use to pour the cream colour that surrounds the pink and yellow inserts.
Note: you will have some batter left over after making the 3 loafs, use these left overs for anything you wish, such as embeds or piping decorations.
Any questions, go through my website.

I guess it could be considered a compliment when someone copies your work I am also a soaper for 25 years and I have had people copy some of my soaps down to the name, fragrance and packaging! I always have thousands of ideas in my head and I'm always ready to forge ahead leaving the copycats in the dust. lol

I got into soapmaking because of the science and art of it. This is why I absolutely love your creations. They're unique and original because you're a true artist. I just love seeing what you've created.

If you add a small bit of wood to the front bottom edge of your cutter, it wont keep sliding away from you as you are cutting. Just a thought.😀 love the idea of little battenburg soaps. I did what looked like small chocolate truffles and had them on a fancy plate to show a friend. My 30 year old daughter came in and spoted them and was just on the verge of sneeking one into her mouth! I scared her silly when I screamed NO, just in the nick of time!! Lesson learned for me, as well as for her!

Yep. I am a soap maker myself and have been doing this since 2008 and you are very right. You are the first person that I ever saw make beautiful, pipped designs with cold process soap. In fact, I remeber seeing one of the first videos from one of the more popular You Tube soapers and they mentioned that they were trying to make soaps like yours and had reached out to you for help.

I'm a new subscriber, recommended by Katie at Royalty Soaps. She was talking about your soaps being copied and sold with the same names and designs. She's disgusted by the abuse of your talent and can't understand how anyone can look themselves in the mirror and be proud of their achievements when they have stolen everything. You are one of Katie's soaping role models and she truly respects you and your work. I obviously had to follow up on her glowing review and I am very happy I did so. This is a beautiful soap. Best wishes from Sydney Australia.

Making of this soap is raw pain in the ass. So glad you find it therapeutic. The colour pallette is something else, sooo gorgeous. Just look at that creamy white colour, sooo delightful. This is pure craft! And you lady are energetic and pretty strong. I wish you more success. And the copycats? Never mind, they are always at the back. They should at least give credit to the original creator to make it fair.

Good morning Karen! I love this soap...what an awesome "original" design! ; ) The soft pink and yellow look so pretty together. It's such a shame how people can steal designs and try to claim them as their own. Riding the coat tails of other successful soapers etc for purpose of gain, just shows the world what kind of person they really are. I have followed you for YEARS and the love of your craft shows through in all your products. Plus your a total sweetheart!!

As always fabulous Miss Karen. 💕👏⭐️ You were one of the very first soap channels I watched that got me hooked into soaping. Copying is rife, I’ve learned in the short time I’ve been soaping and it is usually from seasoned soapers thinking no one will notice if its from the invisible newbies. One successful soaper won a design competition recently with another lady’s creation, it was near identical in both colour and design!! But I agree, leave it be. As hellish as social media has become for ‘uniqueness’, Time stamps are a wonderful thing when it comes to proof...
@EdensSecret1
@EdensSecret1 5 лет назад
Wow, that's the kind of thing I'm talking about, winning something by using somebody else's idea. Copying is gonna happen, I guess it is all part of the biz world. Yep, easy to prove who did it first, by looking at the date.

My daughter lives in Maidstone/London and has for 10 years now ( we 're from the US ) . I thought it would be cute if when she came here this summer to visit, I could have a soap like your Battenberg to make her feel a little more at "home" ( she considers the UK home now) . If you think it would work, do you mind if I use your inspiration ?

Wow! I have never even attempted this in cake firm. I can't imagine making this as a soap. It was fascinating to watch. Thanks for sharing.

I agree with the duplication of your ideas, they should be kind enough to give you a mention as the original creator of the idea. The thing that puzzles me is that some ask you not to make it. Well if they don't want anyone to copy their idea don't put it out here on youtube... Just saying. Giving them the kudos or honorable mention for the design should be just expected though.

forgive my cheeky question, i am wanting to sell my soaps but the assessment i found prohibits making soaps that look like food and also is only valid if ingredients are purchased through them, please could you point me in the right direction so that i can sell food shaped soaps. or at the very least get one that doesn't tie me to one company only. thankyou so much. you inspired me to want to sell but i am struggling with uk red tape.

You already have pretty good views compared to some soap makers. But can I make a suggestion? I feel like if you made your videos a lot shorter, 25 mins TOPS, and left out alot of the down time or more redundant or mundane tasks, that your views would go up exponentially! Most people who watch soap making videos aren't watching them to learn how to make soap but rather because of the asthetics pleasing quality of soap making videos. They are pretty and satisfying to watch. Katie at Royalty Soaps has got it figured out. Her videos have a great balance of tutorial and entertainment value. I would suggest that you watch her videos and take notes of what to include, what not to include, when to do voice overs and when to just have music over the video, etc. I'm not trying to be rude. I just feel like doing these things could keep alot more people interested and watching your videos for longer.

Hi Karen I am in Australia and I find that it is such a saturated soap and candle market making it very hard to compete and most of all make profit. Can you share a tip or two on some platforms you use to sell your creations? :)
@EdensSecret1
@EdensSecret1 5 лет назад
The market is very very saturated now. I really do believe the best way to sell is get out there in front of the public. So they can smell and see how beautiful your product is in person. Although I don't go out selling now. I just have my website.

I realize you didn't ask me but I found a terrific market via being the only person selling anything that was focused on women. I am in the USA and not certain if this applies in other countries. I live in metropolitan Atlanta GA. I doubt this option be as successful in smaller cities/towns. I watch for weekend shows that focus on landscaping, lawn equipment, replacement window windows,, high-end fencing, fountains, etc and rent a small booth. I load soap, jewelry, scarves, tote-bags, purses and candles and set-up my booth for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday event. I am often the only female vendor. There's usually videos and Q&A sessions. One guy wanted to purchase a $15,000 piece of lawn equipment and the wife is was bored. He gave her his black AMEX card to shop while he bought a few 'toys'. She literally spent $2,000 in my booth. There's little he could complain about - she spent much less than he did. It was not unusual for females to gravitate to my booth - I had a 'decorated' booth, a nice table drape, a nice fragrance, a flower arrangement, a full length mirror and I added a strand of cool white lights along the edge of my table drape so it was eye-catching. I worked a maximum of 4 trade shows a year (I had a full-time job at the time), so free time was limited. I received orders from at least 35% of customers that made purchases. I had 3 clipboards on my table with space for their names and emails. I would send an email every 6-8 weeks re where I would next be vending, the dates and a few photos of my current merchandise. My emails often led to purchases. I did not ask for their phone #s and I did not share mine. All communications were via email or my booth. No mistakes due to any miscommunication - everything is written so there's an 'E-trail. Of course there's etsy.com and ebay.com but I prefer having the opportunity to be the only vendor that's Female Focused. (Just selling soap or candles automatically eliminated at least 50% of the females on-site making purchases. Some females would say the fragrances were overpowering. Inevitably they would touch many items including candles and soaps. My diverse inventory pretty much insured at least one item would appeal to just about everyone.) That is a unique market. My booth was always a novelty. Some of the male vendors and Security personnel would purchase jewelry, soap, etc for their wives or girlfriends.

Great video. I'm not sure why you put the white strip in the middle of the squares. I think it would look better with the coloured squares right next to each other. Also, I have a couple of ideas about how to get the squares perfectly level to each other. I have two ideas, one being, instead of doing two full things, one pink, and one yellow, instead do each half pink and half yellow. You'd have to measure to make sure the layers are correct, but then you wouldn't have to have 4 separate bars, you'd only have two separate bars, but they'd have both colours. My second idea would be to stick the coloured bars together right after you cut them, then you could line them up really well. Then when you put them into the white, you'd have one big block, already stuck together, and then you could surround it in the white soap. That way when you cut it, it would be very even, and look even more like the cake. Anyway, those are my ideas for you. Great video 👍
