Pro tip: I like pouring the tallow into a mini silicon ice cube tray, let it solidify in the freezer, then pop them out into a container or zip lock bag. This way, I get exactly 1tsp of tallow for every cube, and it's super easy to use! It's a little bit of extra work at first but worth it. I never liked having to spoon it out from a jar. Pro tip: Render the tallow outside in your bbq so that your whole house doesn't smell, unless you want it to!

I doubt our ancestors literally knew about all the health benefits of tallow, but they did eat and cook with it because that is what was widely available in their day and age. Good for them. We should do the same.

I have a crockpot full of chopped deer fat right now. My first time butchering and my first time rendering tallow. I am thankful for RU-vid University lol! I’ve watched a few videos and decided to do the wet method using water. I’m using the crockpot and will have it on low overnight. I quit eating plants including plant oils earlier this year as plants just give me so many symptoms. I love my meats, eggs, and animal fats and have learned how to pressure can a few months ago and now learning to hunt, butcher, and render tallow. Next time I will be sure to save the visceral fat but it was way too cold when we got the deer to mess around with the organs out in that cold wind. I did save the heart tho as that is my favorite part to eat (and is loaded with the nutrients that my body craves). Thanks for this video!

I have been a meat cutter for over 26 years and I retired. Now I work at a processing center and I could get all the kidney fat (suet) that I want. I have some now that is snow white and I am going to render it. To be truthful I haven't a clue on how to render or use it
@lukepippin4781
@lukepippin4781 Год назад
So something I’ve seen others do (I haven’t had the chance to render tallow yet) is add a little water to the mix. The tallow cools and leaves the water at the bottom, and most of the impurities end up in the water. I feel like that makes sense cause then you don’t have to scrape off as much of your tallow.

A course grind works well if you have a counter top grinder. My grass fed tallow from trim fat is very yellow, it doesn't look like she is getting true grass suet. I pour mine through a milk filter. Tallow is done when it stops bubbling, that means the water is all cooked out.

Sorry to hear about mold in your home. Don’t mess around with mold it’s a silent killer! My daughter and I have had our health very damaged from indoor molds then we got more tick bites which wrecked us even more. The two together have caused critical health issues that nearly killed me several times a few years ago and has left me chronically ill. I’m always trying to learn more about mold illness and tick diseases and how to heal my body. Thankfully I love to learn especially about health related things and these illnesses have given me much opportunity to learn!

Could you strain with cheesecloth inside the strainer to keep those bits out? Also wondering if you gals still make sourdough bread? I saw on your IG a few weeks ago you made einkorn sourdough and I recently started my sourdough journey but havent worked with einkorn yet.
@StrongSistas
@StrongSistas 3 года назад
yes! That is the ideal strain method. My parents just don't have one at their house. We have our sourdough on "pause" - our guts don't like starches too much right now with the mold stuff going on. But working on fixing some gut issues and looking forward to enjoying some homemade sourdough again in the future! The einkorn was definitely more "dense", but it is a traditional/ancient grain that has some more nutrients!

I know you Sistas used to eat raw suet with your meals. I have tried to eat it raw, but can not find a reliable source that is palatable for me (too strong of a taste and texture). What do you think about using it to stir fry shrimp? Or just stir fry in general? Is it good for lower heat applications? I've seen its used in baking so I would assume so. Would the beef flavor throw off shrimp/seafood? I wanna buy some, it's very cheap where I just moved to. My two uses would be to quick fry shrimp with a bit of cornstarch, and to stir fry chicken and veggies.
