Mark all pieces AA, BB, CC etc next to your pencil marks on each separate piece. That way you never lose or forget the original pattern of putting it back together. Also I never use sharpie as it can transfer smudges that are almost impossible to get off. I also take pictures with my IPad and keep it handy to throw those pictures up on a big screen TV that helps if I do have any questions about putting it together. And of course being able to watch RU-vid videos quickly if I need a quick reference from another upholstery Craftsman ❤

Hello Nicole, You are so welcome! I use a Juki LU-2810, But any new or used industrial sewing machine with a walking foot, reverse and a welt foot will do. I use both automotive and marine vinyl, which are really the same. It is very rare to have to replace foam. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I am hoping to get started in marine upholstery but it’s so overwhelming 😳 I already have a great career but the need in my area- I think a simple pillow runs $500 and a 6month wait! So would you recommend I find someone to teach me, like an internship? Or do you think just starting small on my own and watching RU-vid would be suffice? I already sew so I may just practice on vinyls today (husband works in boat industry and already bought material for me to practice lol)

Hello Michelle, I love your enthusiasm! Boat upholstery is a good place to start as you know there is good money in it. What I would do is try to get a used industrial sewing machine that has reverse, a walking foot and a welt foot. The best way to learn is by your mistakes. So don't be afraid to make them. See each project through to the end. You'll know when things are turning around when people are throwing money at you! Remember, learning is doing! (Also, watch my channel) Hehe. Not all marine vinyl is the same quality such as color depth or thickness of the color layer. When a boat owner has to get you to replace the skins on the seats which brands of marine vinyl have thicker color layer and more durable material?
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery Год назад
Hello Dew, A dirty little secret that manufacturers will hate me for. All vinyl is basically the same. Plastic over a fabric backing. Some are thicker than others that's all. Marine vinyl is also a scam, they make more money off of it. It gets old just like any other vinyl. If it didn't, I would never have boat or jet ski customers. I will tell you my shop is full of boat cushions and jet ski seats that have shrunk, brittle, ripped, rotted vinyl. Please keep watching!

Curious if 1/2" or 1/4" foam is necessary under the cover? I've seen it with and without. 🤔
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery Год назад
Hello Stacey, Sure you can use 1/2 or 1/4 inch foam if you want depending on the look that you want. 1/2 Inch will look pillowy. 1/4 inch will look fuller. The cover in this project never had this foam. Many times it's just the vinyl itself. There is no standard so you have freedom to make the choice! Thanks for watching!

Steam your old cushions!! They will come right back almost completely to original form, steam and let dry for several days if possible but at least while your pattering and sewing new covers. You can usually pick up and old stand steamer from Goodwill or other thrift store. They are an amazing tool for reusing old foam in upholstery work if the customer doesn’t want to pay for new foam, if it is in really bad shape, I turn the job away because it will never look good and in the Marine business our reputation is ruined if someone say I did that job
@oldschoolautoupholstery

Hello John, Yes I do use my steamer that I bought new. Bottom line, I always give my customer what they want. Most of the time I give them more than they asked for. Hello Roman, Thank you so much for saying so. When someone needs their upholstery recovered, I am happy to do that for them. It is very rare that the foam needs to be replaced because it has been protected by the cover. When it is necessary it gets done. The bottom line is if the customer requests something be done and pays for it, I have the time. For most people, replacing wood, foam and vinyl would all be cost prohibitive. What is the width of the staples? Some sources are touting 1/2" staples and others are saying 3/8". Just curious what you are using. I also noticed a new staple gun in a newer video. Why the change from Harbor Freight to what appears to be an Arrow? Another question, Do you use a sander on your foam repairs? Again, thank you for the techniques and education.

Hello Bogo, You are so welcome! I only use T50 staples for everything I do. Not sure of the crown size, I never pay attention. The HF staple gun wore out so I replaced it with the Arrow. It uses the same staple. You can use a sander on foam, but I never do. Please keep liking and watching!

Good morning… I have a back rest for a pontoon bench that has a small mid section that is gathered… I thought I had it all figured out until I tried it in the bench …I will email pictures….there were big gaps, now I’m trying to figure out what to do to make it look and fit right… I added foam to sides…I think it fits good, now to figure out my vinyl cover that is gathered… I may also need to make a new backer board as original one is a lot smaller… I don’t want to pull vinyl too much and get gaps….do I make my skin a couple inches larger than foam then gather? Would I apply sew foam after gathered (stretch vinyl out then sew on?)…took me all day yesterday to try and get it right now I’m reaching out… I’m hoping I have your email to show what I’m talking about

Hello James, Oh, you are a brave one! I am so happy you can make a decision for yourself like this. I think you will do just fine with your boat. Ok, I would do it in auto or marine vinyl, I use T-92 bonded nylon or polyester thread for everything, and I would use an industrial sewing machine. Please keep liking and watching!

When you top stitched… you stitched reverse side first then flipped it on to the face of the vinyl and “top stitched “. Did you stitch the 3/8” tag vinyl from reverse side the the top stitches? Or is top stitches just the stitches that create the look but your not stitched to anything on the underside of that bead???

Hello Thelab, Merry Christmas to you as well! I would try the easiest solution first. Try to super glue the holes so they don't spread. Hello All Construction, As you can see plastic was not under the old cover. Some people use plastic to aid in slipping on a seat cover. Helps it glide better. Plastic actually traps moisture in the foam and it doesn't breathe, therefore, it never drys. Thanks for watching!

First of all, thank you so much for all of your valuable information. I am just starting my own marine cover/upholstery business. You have taught me so much in so many different areas already. Your videos are invaluable as I start my sewing journey. One question (I’m sure of many to come) is regarding your listings. It looks like you just used scrap vinyl? Is that true or is there a specific type of material you like to use the most for listings?
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery 6 месяцев назад
Hello Miss, You are so welcome! I love hearing good news like this. I think you will do just fine in your new business. Marine upholstery is a great place to be as you can charge more than you could for auto or furniture, but not as much as you could with aircraft. That being said, you should not limit yourself. Accept all upholstery work. You will have a better life for you and your family if you do. Yep, scrap vinyl. Any vinyl will do. Remember this is not rocket science as I always say. Some boat makers use vinyl piping on all of their seat and deck covers where there is a seam. I was told that adding the piping to the seam would increase the strength and help it from tearing out as seat vinyl age and people stepping on the seam. I have seen this in Sanger and Malibu boats to name two. What do you think? Does adding the piping to a seam increase its durability? Also picky boat owners don’t allow shoes on their boats and also they keep the vinyl clean and uv protection on them.
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery Год назад
Hello Dew, Piping or welt does nothing to keep the vinyl from splitting once the vinyl becomes shrunk and brittle. The seams fail first where the needle perforated the vinyl when it was first sewn. I replace the old "Skins" all the time and see this is true. Thanks for watching!

@@sherrybailey2420 Hello Sherry, I have thousands and thousands of comments on my RU-vid channel, and I have answered every one of them, just as I am answering yours.
