Step by step boilie making guide and recipe to make your own carp bait with Blue Oyster base mix. Fishing with my homemade boilies has given great results: www.frenchcarpandcats.com/blog...
This video shows in great detail my boilie making process. I've been making my own carp bait since the beginning of the year. In March, I tested it out properly at Beausoleil. After pre-baiting for a week with 5kg of 22mm baits, I got a new PB of 48lbs 4 oz and followed that with a 43lb mirror to give me my first ever brace of 40's. The hook baits were 22mm dumbbells that were air dried for longer and boosted by adding a few drops of liquid every few days. I've also achieved my goal of catching a river carp and again after pre-baiting with 3kg, took a 24lb 12oz mirror carp from the river Mayenne.
Filmed at Beausoleil French Carp and Cats, one of the most beautiful fishing lakes for big carp and monster catfish in North West France.

2020 Note: This video shows you how to make boilies from a ready made base mix, not totally from scratch. I used the Blue Oyster mix for a few years, now I use a different mix that has more nutritional qualities for my carp but I essentially use the same method to make the boilies. I don't mix the ingredients by hand anymore though, I've bought a second hand Hobart mixer and that's made the mixing a lot easier!

Hi Mathew, I've been Rolling my own Baits for many years and have always put the shells in with the Bait mix this way it gives the Bait some crunch when Carp feed they crunch the Bait with their throat Teeth and if you can imagine the sound this makes under the water, sounds travel a long way under water and the crunch let's other Carp know that some of there Buddy's are on the Munch. Also a good tip if you can get any Seaweed put that in your Bait mix as Seaweed has Iodine in it remember when you was a kid our Mum's used to put Iodine on our cuts and Bruises to make them heal quicker. It helps the Carps mouths recover from hook marks in the Mouths and also with Raw spots on their Bodies whilst Breading with the expansion of their tums with Egg's and Milt a spoonful of salt wouldn't go a miss just think of Cows and Sheep in a field with a salt lick ? Put the shells in a Blender with some seaweed, I also Steam my Baits in a three tear Vegetable steamer that way your Baits will keep all of the goodness in the Boilie's. just like cooking Vegetables for ourselves. Hope this has given you food for thought ( excuse the pun ) Best wishes Dave the Carp Hunter.

Thanks for sharing your tips Dave, all good stuff. These days I use Oyster shell in the base mix to give the crunch factor. I use iodine to treat wounds but hadn't thought about using it in the mix. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Mathew, Reading through some of the Massages on your website. ...I thought I'd share my thoughts on rolling Home made Bait. The Best thing with Rolling your own Baits is you know Exactly what's in it also you can tweak the Bait slightly from Summer to winter in Summer I always use a little bit more Oil as the water is Warmer and as we all know oil won't mix with Water and it floats through the Layers to the top of the Lake giving off the flavours as a career the Carp swimming through the Layers will pick this up and turn and home in on the Bait just think when you pop the freebies round your Hook Bait it's all giving off Flavours good stuff. A good Carrier in Winter is a Spirit Like Vodka or Scotch especially in winter as it won't Freeze in the Cold Water it works like an Antifreeze in a Car Radiator. Have I got your Attention? A Word of warning in winter cut Back on the Oil as it Congolese Because of the water is Colder and isn't good for Digestion, also in my Opinion Freezer Baits will out fish off the Shelf Boilie's as there are no Additives in Freezer Baits and think How long has shop Boilie's been made kept in stock then go to the Shop then on the Shelf then to the Customer. NO CONTEST === All you Guys reading this make your Own Baits and just think of all the Fish you Catch are on your own Mixes What a Thrill? if Any of you find this interesting I'll dig out my Bait Book and send you some Recipes. Remember making Bait is an Art Form and is a subject all on its Own. just to mention I've fished all over Europe, France, Belgium , Holland and Spain. I live in Spain and with the Internet I can keep in touch Best wishes Dave the Carp Hunter

Hello! I am Vietnamese and admire the way you guys fish for carp. I want to learn about the ingredients for bait and what factors help boilie float, hope you can help. I have subscribed to your support channel
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 2 года назад
Hello, thanks for commenting and subscribing. The thing about boilies is that they are designed to sink not float. We call baits that float "popups". There are also baits with neutral buoyancy which are called "wafters". I'm afraid I'm really not the best person to ask when it comes to bait ingredients. I've only used ready made base mixes and I’m not fully familiar with the science behind the design of the actual mixes. I'm sorry that I can't be of more help. Regards, Matt.

roll your own Hello mate, thanks very much for your comment. Glad you enjoyed the video. I use 7.5ml of the matching UTCS Blue Oyster liquid per 5 eggs and per 500g of the Blue Oyster base mix. It's very strong stuff by the way, my advice would be to open it at arms length and don't sniff to hard! I've accidentally made friends throw up after smelling it! I quite like the smell actually but then again I'm very used to it now. Happy rolling, Matt.

Hi there how much is the base mix and liquid roughly and can you freeze these and if so when you can then out the freezer and they are not frozen anymore will they still have a string sent to them
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 7 лет назад
Hi mate, I don’t use this mix anymore myself as I have someone make a mix just for the lake. I think I paid £7.50 trade but it’s more like £8.99kg for the mix and £16.99 per 100 ml for the liquid. Very expensive! You’ll get 1.5kg of finished bait per 1kg of base mix. Plenty of good base mixes out there if you want to buy it readymade though. The boilies are designed to be frozen mate. They keep for months but as with all freezer baits if you keep them too long they will suffer from freezer burn so I always try to minimise the amount I freeze. When thawed they will have the same texture, hardness and smell as they did when you froze them. I also air dry some of my bait for river carping and it works great. It loses all its smell when dry but as soon as it’s wet it will leak off flavour and the fish will find it no problem. You can re-freeze freezer baits no problem. Don’t worry if you see a bit of white powder on the surface if you re-freeze a couple of times. That’s enzymes getting to work and it makes the bait even more attractive! Good luck with whatever mix you choose. Cheers, Matt.

what is a good all round size boilie? i fish on a lake that mostly has 10lb to 20lb only a few 25+ carp but want to catch bigger in the future but i don't fancy buying many different size boilie rolling tables . thanks
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 3 года назад
Hi mate, thanks for your question. A good all round choice of boilie size is either 18mm or 20mm. They're perfect for the size of carp you're targeting. You don’t need to increase the boilie size to catch larger carp, you just need to fish waters that contain larger carp 😊 All the best, Matt.

Hi I've made my own boillies over the years, to make the boillie a bit firmer so you can drill it for corking, would I firm the boillie slightly by boiling it longer ? or air dry it longer ? Hopefully that makes sense.. KR Gaz
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 4 года назад
Hi mate, thanks for your comment. Yes boiling for longer will make the baits tougher and more suitable for drilling to balance with a cork insert. No good just air drying them as they are more likely to crack open as the outer crust will still be quite thick without the longer boil time. I've experimented with putting cork inserts inside baits etc. over the years but TBH I don't believe it's made any difference! All the best with your fishing. Cheers, Matt.

@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 9 лет назад
+james moore Hi James, thanks for your comment. It all depends on where you buy your base ingredients from. I have an account with Nutrabaits so I'm able to buy at trade prices. This give my the margin I need to roll the bait and make a little money. It's easy to work out what the cost of the ingredients are and I can tell you that 1kg of base mix produces approx 1.3kg of finished baits. From memory I would say that if you buy the Nutrabait mix and liquid at normal retail price from a distributor it's going to cost around £8/kg in ingredients including eggs to roll your own. There is much more to home rolling than cheaper bait. You'll get a better product that meets the exact needs of your fishing for every situation and the satisfaction of knowing that you made the bait yourself! Hope this helps, Matt.

@matthewcollinsangler 4 года назад
@@azaz... Yeah mate that will work! I started rolling a new mix this year that we call the garlic special. It's a nut based mix with dry garlic flakes in it and it smells fantastic and works really well! The garlic cooks when you boil the baits. If you're looking to keep costs down, I’d not even bother with boilies. I would go with particles en masse. Check this video where I show you how to create an incredibly cheap but highly effective particle mix: 2 x 25kg sacks of wheat and cracked corn should set you back less than £25 from your local pet store. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6beCyhjnM_0.html I fished this method a lot this spring with just a single hook bait over the top. The other alternative is just a single nut on the hair. Anything will do, tiger nut, a peeled peanut, I found cob nuts (hazel nuts) work really well too! Have fun, Matt.

You folks are insane. I get a two to one bite ratio, and a three to one hookup ratio, with plain old doughball that's ten times easier to make, and that covers the entire hook. I've yet to see any boilie, home made or store bought, that's even half as good as any one of at least a dozen trypes of American doughball. And I'll never understand why those in the UK think carp will suck down a naked hook as fast a sthey will one that's covered. Maybe the fat, lazy carp in the UK will,, those things get caught over and over, and often have names, but our carp simply won't.

I bought a rolling table, a sausage gun and a cooking pot, I had the compressor already, I made a table and my drying trays with bits of wood. I made hundreds of kilos per year for my guests at the lake so this was the right level of equipment investment at the time for me. If I made boilies for my own fishing only, I can do it with a much simpler setup of course.

You know it is very easy to make a boilie mix yourself right. And making recipies is also pretty easy a lot of sites that sell the ingredients also state how much % you can use in your mix. It is waaaaay cheaper and fun also. For under 3 quid you can make an insanely good bait per kilo. Something that your crappy scopex squid boilies can' even look at cause they are so bad nutrition wise 😂 nice set up though! I am gonna mount my rolling table on on a board like that aswell, good idea. Also you can just make 3 rolls at once mate. also your boilies shouldn't stick at all if they stick the mix isn't right. Even when not cooked they shouldn't stick together else there is something wrong in the recipy mate.
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler Год назад
This was very much in the early days of my bait making! I've changed mixes and tweaked my setup afterwards, got the mix just right and yes, I did 3 rolls at the same time. Did it for a number of years for myself and our guests but had to stop for a variety of reasons.
