How to make box joints (sometimes called finger joints) using only a router. Making box joints on the table saw requires a dado stack which isn’t available in all areas. The next best method is at the router table but not everyone has the space for a dedicated router table. This tutorial video shows a simple method on making a jig out of plywood for a hand held router that attaches to the base. Once you make this woodworking jig you’ll always be set up for box joints and finger joints. If you choose to change up your box joint finger width you’ll need to swap out the bit and make a dedicated fence for that bit.

I got some radiata pine plywood recently, best quality plywood I've used before. nicely smooth on both sides, good layers, flat with little to no warping. I'd highly recommending looking for it if you can, worth the $$ if you're wanting to actually make something nice. It was $38 for a 4'x8', 3/4inch slab, and I made several projects out of it. I think the 1/2inch option was something like $27.

I'm 61 and just getting started. I've watched a lot of video's to help me get the inspiration and I haven't seen any the adds up to yours. Wish I wouldn't have wasted my time with them but oh well. I bought a table saw and jig saw and brought home some old pallets, took them apart and spent a lot of time shaving and ripping. I have a lot of really nice looking pieces of wood and here I sit. I appreciate your jig videos, I guess that's what I really need to get started. I'll keep watching.Thank you for your knowledge.

The spiral bit is definitely the way to go for cutting finger joints with the router. I use a similar jig clamped to the top of my ancient Craftsman router table to make 1/8" finger joints. I use 1/8" keyway stock for the pin. No messing around trying to match the exact size of the router bit.
