as someone probably going through a midlife crisis and slowly turning into a "whisky after work guy", super clear ice makes ya feel *so* much more classy about casual alcoholism :P
No one does there just pointing out the obv. It's the same as saying shes drunk af no one cares. But saying she's high af weeds bad blah blah blah you know the rest then yeah I get what you're saying
The top doesn't freeze clear by "freezing the purest water first." Trapped air in the top layer is pushed to the lower level water as it freezes from the top down. In a regular ice cube you can tell what part froze last from looking at where the air bubbles are trapped.
Can't you make a bunch of cubes and keep them frozen and make more and stockpile them for a party? I've got some molds for geometric spheres and I'm thinking of doing that. The sphere melter you have is so cool! I'm gonna give this a try
The cloudiness to ice isn't "impurities". It's from gases that are in suspension in the water. This is why even if you make ice with distilled water, it's cloudy, because of tiny gas bubbles trapped in the inside of the ice cubes. Directional freezing gives the suspended gases somewhere to go (down, in the unfrozen water) as the ice freezes. If you let that cooler freeze completely by leaving it in the freezer for 3 or 4 days, the bottom of your ice block will be cloudy as heck--and that cloudiness is the gas bubbles...
Couple question: 1. Do you need to close the lid when you put the box into the fridge? 2. What’s that thing you use to make the ice ball? I want one of that! Can you link it? Really appreciate!
I'm thinking of stacking blocks of this for a party, only the outer layer would need to have short contact with the surface of the bigger blocks in order to make it clear again. Right?
@Tipsybartender or anyone that could answer my question.. Could you put the chunks of ice back in the freezer and they still stay clear when ready to use??
well I guess If I'm going to have a small get together, I can make a couple batches every day beforehand and store them. They do look really cool and fancy.
So if I want numerous small cubes, like the usual ice tray size, I can theoretically make it? Punch holes in the ice tray, put it on top of a container with kinda temperature insulating walls, and fill the water from the top until it fills the container and the ice tray. Also, for temperature insulation, maybe I can cut styrofoams the size of the container, and stick them outside, or even inside of the container.
So correct me if I'm wrong but what I take away from this is another form of water purification. All the pure clean water freezes first and the dirty water settles at the bottom of the ice chest leaving clean clear pure ice. Then let it melt into pure clean water?
If you were to cut the shapes you want and put it back in the freezer it would stay clear right? I don't think I'm dumb and I like science so in my mind I would guess it stays clear because there's no air getting back into the ice. Just a thought if you needed ice for a party, you could just make it all beforehand and stick it back in the freezer to use later.
Her: "My hands are full, how do I open the freezer door?" Men everywhere: "Put the f*cking thing down and open the freezer door, then pick it back up again!!!!"
