Make colorful beads using rigatoni pasta, food coloring, and a spot of alcohol on this Emmymade How-to: colored pasta.
Colorful Pasta
1 lb. box of pasta, divided into 6 parts if making several colors
1 tsp. alcohol, rubbing or vodka
10-20 drops of food coloring

I thought it would be coloured pasta you could eat. LMAO! And when I saw the necklace I was like "Or you could cook it?" But then you mentioned you used rubbing alcohol and was all "maybe not the best idea to eat that." XD

Well once it air dries... it's okay to eat it- they alcohol evaporates away.

You could dye macaroni or a smaller shaped pasta, and print out coloring pages on sturdy paper and let him make mosaics with the colored pasta and glue. I did it with some kids at a daycare and they loved it so much.

Pasta collages are fun...we make coloured rice too and use non toxic pva glue and sprinkle it on with glitter and then some days we just put it a container with spoons, cups and funnels and the kids love it...

In theory if you use vodka instead of rubbing alcohol and dyed the pasta, you would still be able to cook and eat them right?

Have u tryed making slime with clear glue? I did it and it looks amazing i love it specially with the food die color. I only added 1 drop of blue and love it.

A fun thing to do with this craft is to make it into a race get to really long pieces of string or yarn and have one person stand at the top of the steps or on a hill or something and another person at the bottom and put the two pieces of Pasta on each string and hold it up in the air I'm racing down to the bottom and you could see which pasta wins

Such deep vibrant colors! Pinterest, perhaps. I did see a site that had lasagna stained glass! Maybe you can make sculptures using pipe cleaners as a substructure? And of course, gluing onto paper plates is always fun!

I am trying to preserve pasta to use as a decoration in glass front kitchen drawers. I want to keep the original colors but want to avoid the weavers from making a meal of them. Does just alcohol work for that? Or should I try clear spray paining? Thoughts?

You could glue them onto the same pasta box and create buildings or robots. Maybe even a self portait! When I was younger I glued macaroni onto the macaroni boxes and painted them silver to create cool robots.The head and other parts made up of smaller boxes, paper, or straws of course. ^ ^

why do you need to put the rubbing alcohol? what would happen if you had just used the food colouring alone, or used water to dilute it?

אסתר מרגוליס You need something to evenly disperse the food coloring. You could use water but the pasta will take a lot longer to dry. I've heard vinegar works too, but my son doesn't care for the smell. Food coloring alone will give you splotchy pasta, but experiment and see what works best for you.

I teach preschool, and made these with vodka. I didn't let them take it home though, b/c at the last minute, I freaked out that they might put them in their mouth, or that a younger sibling might chew on them. Would they get sick from it?

Maybe you could sort the different colors into decorative glass containers that you put out in the kitchen or dining room when you have guests. It sure beats buying the expensive decorative pasta jars.

Kat It's not the vodka that makes it inedible, but the food colouring. Food colouring usually has a pungent, unpleasant flavour, but since in most recipes you only use a few drops you can't really taste it. But I bet that, since she used quite a lot and the pasta doesn't have much flavour of its own to mask the dye's taste, this pasta probably won't taste very good. I think the goal here wasn't to make the pasta edible, but to make it non-toxic, since kids often put things in their mouths.

you guys could do the reuse station we did that with the kids when I taught pre-school we used the bag and then made many types of beads and tied a bead at the end of the string and then tied a loop at the other and they could make different necklaces everyday some made giant necklaces with multiple strings.

If you did it with vodka as opposed to isopropyl it would be interesting to see if the color lasted through boiling. I would, of course, expect some color to leech out so only one color could be used; but I would not be surprised if some was left behind. Then again, if edible green pasta was the goal it would be much easier to die once cooked.
