Love this! Was wanting to color rice for edible sand mandalas, but now I want my children to have sensory bins like this! (Note: I know it's normal for people to eat the sand, but that's not my vibe, and I discourage the consummation of sand)

How long can you preserve the prepared rice?
@PocketfulofParenting
@PocketfulofParenting 2 года назад
Hi Cynthia! I usually store mine in Ziplock bags or airtight plastic containers and they last for months! I just inspect them before each use to make sure they look okay. I try to have my kids wash their hands before and after each use. I just use my judgement for when to get rid of them and make a new batch (for example, if one has been used many times or if my son happens to drool in the bin or I find anything gross in it lol.) Hope this helps!

How did you do that very dark color?
@PocketfulofParenting
@PocketfulofParenting 3 года назад
I mixed blue and red food coloring together directly in the bag, but after this video I got an actual purple food coloring which makes it come out way more “purple-y” lol. Hope this helps!

Is it with liquid or gel food coloring
@PocketfulofParenting
@PocketfulofParenting 10 месяцев назад
I’ve only personally used liquid, so not sure how the gel would work. Hope this helps!

Can we dry in the oven faster?
@PocketfulofParenting
@PocketfulofParenting 2 года назад
I’m not sure! I’ve never tried this. It dries fairly quickly though if you spread it out well. Or maybe a blow dryer could help speed it up?

@@PocketfulofParenting it did ! I had a bit of a challenge trying to create brown by mixing colours. Got there eventually! And I popped it under the grill to speed up drying 😅

My son is throwing the rice any tips to stop that ?
@PocketfulofParenting
@PocketfulofParenting 2 месяца назад
This is super common for little ones and all part of their exploring, but can be really annoying for us as parents! Before I start any sensory bin, I always state my "rules" - which I keep VERY simple: 1) everything stays in the bin (no throwing) 2) nothing in your mouth I will usually give one warning if a rule is broken, then if they keep doing the action (like throwing) I will calmly state, "It still looks like you're having a hard time keeping the rice in the bin. We're going to take a break and we'll try again (later, tomorrow, whatever time frame is right for you) and then remove the bin. The more you do this, the less they will throw - as long as you stay consistent with removing the bin when it happens. I also lay a disposable table cloth down for the inevitable rice spilling that happens during sensory play. I hope this helps! Happy playing!

Can you cook and eat the rice after dying it? That’s what I’m wondering
@PocketfulofParenting
@PocketfulofParenting 2 года назад
I wouldn’t recommend it because of the vinegar used in this recipe - probably wouldn’t taste too good! If you want to dye rice to eat, I would just cook it first than add about 1-2 drops of your preferred color of food coloring (and maybe a few drops of water if necessary) before mixing and eating.

Reason for adding vinegar ?
@PocketfulofParenting
@PocketfulofParenting 11 месяцев назад
Hey! The vinegar helps to spread the color and lock it in so it doesn't transfer. I've also heard of using rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer or lemon juice for this, but I've never personally done this myself. Hope this helps!

I’ve tried it with vinegar and It didn’t work that well as with hand sanitizer. Also the rice smells from vinegar.
@PocketfulofParenting
@PocketfulofParenting 2 года назад
Yes, rubbing alcohol works too! I just prefer to use a more "taste safe" option when possible in case anything winds up in my son's mouth. Thanks for sharing!

Why did you need the vinegar?
@PocketfulofParenting
@PocketfulofParenting 9 месяцев назад
It helps to lock the color in, help it spread while mixing and prevent transfer after it dries. I’ve also heard of using rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer or lemon juice, but I’ve never personally tried these. Hope this helps!
