I have watched so many concrete stepping stone videos, and it seems everyone does it differently! Your video was very straightforward and simple. I'm glad you can just use the one type of Quikcrete - others mix this with straight cement sometimes and I am so confused about what kind of concrete to use! Also, I have many relatives in Ontario, so listening to you brought a smile to my face. Hugs from Ohio! Thanks, Marina.

Thank you for so many reasons. You made it simplistic, you make it fun and all of your pieces turned out really really pretty. I've been looking through pavers/stepping stones and so on for a while. Some of them are so complicated that it's just not worth what I want to do. So, thank you again you did a great job and I'm going to pass this onto my granddaughters and maybe their kids to do as fun projects.

With white concrete, or pigmentation for the concrete, they would be truly beautiful. The gray atm detracts from the stepping stones' design, but still great nonetheless
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

Pigment for cement is costly so wanted to keep the price down for others wanting to try it out. Also the cement I used was very cheap compared to a white cement but you can can certainly use other cements or concretes if desired.

i like the rock people one. because it looks more natural. some of the things used in stepping stones feel like..... idk, like that trend when people used a Bedazzler on *everything* or just some materials look a little cheap to me. that rock people one looks like artwork. it's the simplicity but also the really interesting shapes picked and the monochromatic shades. (i'm not bagging on the other ones, hope it doesn't sound that way. i'm an artist so i overanalyze everything. really liked the spiral idea, and the clear bead things on the edge look interesting - picturing what a stepping stone that was mostly those would look like.) thanks for your really great instructions!

You can also add colored sand to the mix to make the concrete have more vibrant colors for the project.
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts 2 года назад
Yes, I looked into concrete colourant and it’s very expensive but perhaps the coloured sand is cheaper.
@oshafactcheckerexposethepl9245
@oshafactcheckerexposethepl9245 2 года назад
It's about the sane price depending on the result you expect to achieve. You won't need to much sand to have some tint to the project and with colored cement it will fe more of a full color. But you can also dye regular sand from the beach with things found in the woods, i.e. bake a batch of blueberry juice and soak the sand for a week before setting out in the sun to dry. Can't exactly dye cement untill after its used and mite make mistakes easy, so I'd avoid that altogether. Loved the painted rocks, I plan to do glow stones and or glow sand when I attempt my projects. Looking to make fire bricks decorative on the outside of a fire pit. Same type of project just add perlite 14 parts, 2 parts sand, 2 parts cement. And the chicken wire also great idea to add to the fire bricks as they break easy when dropped.
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

Thanks for your informative comment! Your fire pit sounds like it’s going to be amazing!

I like her ideas, one thing I would do differently is put the design at the bottom of the pan and use a small amount of glue to hold them in place before you put the plaster/cement morter into the mold. This step also helps those pieces set into the finished product securely so they are less likely to come loose from walking on them, as that is usually what happens unless it's in a garden and not part of a pathway.
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts 2 года назад
I did do a test and I tried placing pieces on the bottom of the pan first before adding the cement but when the stone is released I found that the cement seeped under pieces and they were covered with too much cement. I like adding the stones or embellishments on top of the cement as it gives me the chance to change the design if I want to. I have made many stepping stones and have never had a piece come lose so I prefer the method I demonstrated.
@oshafactcheckerexposethepl9245
@oshafactcheckerexposethepl9245 2 года назад
This step I use a bit of hot glue from a glue gun to do exactly that, I do want a small amount to hold the stones in place but not to much. The glue removes easy and heavy foot traffic won't make them come loose as fast. Good for path walks, not important for decorations that won't be stepped on. Like with flat glass thats harder to hold in place or seashells, less likely to Crack, shatter, and break if stepped on. God bless keep up the amazing projects, I'd love to see you make a bullet stove with some of those ideas applied to a fire brick morter recipe.

@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts 3 месяца назад
Oh my. I would have to go back and listen to my video. The concrete will harden in about 20-40 minutes. My test is looking at the cement after I have released it from the form. It will be lighter on the top and darker on the bottom if it is not completely dry. Sorry, I don’t remember a reference to your question. But the longer you leave the concrete or cement the more it will set up and be stronger.

This was a wonderful video Mrs. Patti! I wanted to use some glass I had to make some stepping stones myself but they're not tumbled and I would like to if I can use them as is. However I'm worried that the glass would be to sharp and might cut my feet if I use them and they're not pushed down far enough. Do you have any ideas so that I'll still be able to use them?
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts 2 года назад
For safety use some no cut gloves and then try and smooth your edges with some course sand paper. Or place the pieces of glass in the cement and then take a plastic spoon and try to neatly place additional cement around the edges of the glass, just enough to cover all sharp edges.

@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

If you use hard shells like clam shells and they are deeply embedded in the concrete than they will be fine. Same with the glass. Make sure it has smooth edges and is nicely embedded so on the surface of the glass is showing. I don’t wear high heels so not sure about that one.

Hi Patti, from Patti 😊. I’ve watched so many of these videos and they all stink. Thanks for taking the time to create this. 2 questions- if no one will be stepping on them, do you think the wire is necessary and what is the name of the round pan? Thanks in advance!
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts

So glad you found me Patti with an i! Glad you enjoyed the video. You might be okay with no chicken wire. It just adds more strength and helps it to not break in half. It’s called a spring form pan.

I'm watching your video on the stepping stones. I have a couple questions. Do you treat them with anything once they are done, like a sealant of some type? And are they able to be walked on? I would be concerned that shells would break if people were walking on them.
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts 4 месяца назад
I didn’t treat mine but if you want more of a wet glossy look than put a coat of varnish on them. Make sure that any shells or decorative items are placed deep enough that they are secure and not raised high above the stepping stone edge. Although I have named these stepping stones they can also be decorative stones in your garden for the ones you don’t want people stepping on. The rock people stone I did would be great for stepping on.

@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts thank you for your quick response! Another question… sorry to be a pain. Can I use a acrylic white paint or do u have other suggestions? I’m totally new to this & so excited to try!

Acrylic white paint is fine.

What adhesive do you use when a decorative piece falls out?
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts 10 месяцев назад
I would mix up a little concrete or cement and place it in where the object fell out and make sure the sides of the object are slightly covered in the concrete or cement so it doesn’t fall out again. Other than doing that usually epoxy glues will stick to cement but read the label to see what applications it can be used for. Or you can try gorilla glue. Again check label on package for application.

I see it's been a year, but never know unless you try. I see you used concrete with gravel in it. Is this what you recommend still? Or would you use Sand concrete? I went and bought two 80lb bags that were recommended by the employee there, but most of the diy videos suggest other cement/concrete.

My stepping stones have been in the garden the whole time and holding up really well. The concrete mix I used is really inexpensive so a good value and works just as well. If you want a smoother stone than by all means you can use the sand concrete. Both work.

What kind of concrete do u buy with out rocks??

If you don’t want any stones in it than you can buy cement instead of concrete.

@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Did you use sealant on the painted rocks? I've painted rocks and sealed them, but after a few months of being outside in the elements the paint wore off. What am I doing wrong?

Next best thing is not sand paper, a pumice stone works much better and last much longer.
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts 2 года назад
Yes, you are correct. Sandpaper does wear out pretty fast on the cement. The pumice stone is a great idea.

Thanks for the idea of the pumice stone. I will definitely be making some for my yard a bit larger. Can they be made in plastic also?

@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts yes, tons of pam. i used the fast setting quikrete though, maybe i should have used a different kind

@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Месяц назад
That’s weird. I used the quick dry concrete as well so it’s not that. I had all different kinds of pans and they all slipped right out. If you are worried about trying it again you can always line the pan with parchment paper. I want you to have success!

I would look better if u used cement u used concrete that has stones in it
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts
@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts 2 года назад
The concrete is a lot cheaper and I don’t mind the extra texture with a few stones but if you want a smoother edge than you certainly can use cement as you suggested. Most of my concrete is covered with embellishments so you can’t see much of the concrete and they are set into the soil so you don’t see the edges.
