My mom used to make this. Cooked it in a big cast iron skillet. Only difference was onions were diced and no soy. Served over rice. Side of cabbage, black eyed peas and cornbread. And in southwest Mississippi of all places. I can smell and taste it now. Thanks for sharing.

You mentioned butter. If butter replaced the oil will it taste maybe a little sweeter? Thank you for sharing, I like to try to cook recipes from different ethnicities.
Different than how me make it in the Marshall Islands. Here are the ingredients. 1 can of cornbeef and half a water fill it in a pot and let it boil up to medium level. Drop of joy sauce, not too much or too little, but just right. Open up the cornbeef and pour it in the pot. Cut half a full onion and cut it into square pieces. Dump it all in and make sure you have a 1 cup of flour and mix it with coconut milk or water. Either way is fine. Then dump it while you stir the pot. Make sure to keep stirring until it look starchy and not too hard to stir. You need to have a Sapporo ramen noodle and crumble it into pieces and dump it all into the pot. Make sure to use the ramen spice inside of it as well. Then last, but not least you could add corn, carrots and beans into the pots. I recommend the frozen bag that have corn, carrots and beans in it. You can also get rid of the ramen and just add flour mix water and the veggies I mention above. Don't forget the ramen spice if you don't like the noodle, just take the spice and added into the pot. Then let it simmer for 5 min. Oh don't forget to add Aji-nomo-to. No salt needed when you have Aji-nomo-to. It gives the flavor. Welp enjoy my Marshallese recipe.
My grandmother made this, my mom made this, now I make this. They lived on the big island in the 50s and I guess that is where they learned it. Just made it for St. Patrick's day. Do you have a history of this dish. I would love to know more. Thanks.
