Hello, getting ready to make my first pair of chaps for a teenager, without fringe. Do I just glue the edges like you did on the outside? Also what measurements do I need, just from the waist down? How do you measure for the belt, is it one size fits all?
Pretty talented!! I have a pair of leather pants made out of deer hide I used for a Mountain Man Rendezvous. Do you think I could change them into chaps? Thanks.
I've started doing custom chaps, beginner, and have had some trouble with the back belt. My customers are really into the bison leather which is really heavy, any material you recommend for more stability for the belt ? Thx
If I am understanding what you mean by 'bowing', it is when the cut of fringe shows a slight change towards the end of one piece. This 'bow' progresses until the fringe is no longer straight pieces. If this is what you are experiencing, I left some pointers for you in hopes that this will help. To prevent 'bowing'; 1. Insure your lines are cut straight. A. Adequate amount of hand pressure on guide (ruler). B. Use painters tape on sections being cut to insure no movement occurs in the body of the leather being fringed. C. Use weights on ruler if necessary, to keep it from moving 2. Insure that each strip of the leather fringe is cut the same width. Use an awl to make a small hole on each end of the ruler. Keep the ruler aligned by insuring the ends have stayed on the tiny holes during the cutting process. 3. Insure the fringed leather is the same thickness for each piece being cut.
