How to: Make Dandelion Tea

I didn't intend on making a soft spoken video but it sort of became one. I already dislike talking in videos, so as I worked, the birds decided to speak for me. I might try it again intentionally sometime. At any rate, here's how I make fresh dandelion tea!

Thanks and welcome to the channel- Or at least welcome to the video! I am considering re-doing this video with the intent of ASMR. The beginning is a bit too loud for my liking because I hadn't really thought about it at the time.

Hidden Thicket I picked a bunch of dandelions out in the field the other day and spent the afternoon plucking the petals, you mentioned peeling the green- I noticed if you kinda squeeze the bottom really tight, the green separates really easily & all the petals just fall out in a clump, it makes for real easy work!

Just a little HACK for you'all. The easiest way to get the green bottoms off and save as much yellow petals. Just pintch the bottom green between your thumb and index finger, then kinda squeeze and wiggle. All the yellow petals fallout and green is left whole to toss
@HiddenThicket
@HiddenThicket Год назад
When I did that, it broke the bottoms off the petals, but if that works for you, great hack!
@NichaelCramer

I’ve found that if you let the newly picked flowers rest for a bit, then the flowers close up. This makes it easier to pull the yellow petals away from the green part.
@HiddenThicket
@HiddenThicket Год назад
If you let them sit for too long without pulling off the petals, they turn into fluffs overnight. They taste the same, but it's white fluff instead of yellow petals.

OMG...So, there I Was this morning, in Southeastern NC, bored. We have unseasonably warm weather and I saw a few other videos about dandelion tea. I also have some wild garlic and onion patches in my yard. After watching a few other videos, I spent an hour outside crawling around picking dandelions. I excitedly went inside with my fresh harvest. I carefully rinsed them in cold water after soaking them for a minute or so to make sure no tiny insects were in there. Using a medium pot I boiled some water and added some fresh local honey I bought from the flea-market this past weekend. Mixed the dandelions and honey together, put it in the mason jar and topped it off with the hot water. After that I placed it in the fridge to cool off. I sat back in front of my computer and came upon your video....then chaos ensued. I didn't take the green parts off, simply put the dandelions in as I plucked them. I rushed back to the fridge, grabbed the jar (thinking I had time to fix the situation) and forgot the jar was still hot. I dropped it on the ground and the jar exploded at my bare feet. Luckily I wasn't cut and when I tried to tiptoe away I slipped and fell busting my ass on the floor. I am ok, not hurt no worries. But I wish I had seen your video first lol.

As long as they are dried and stored nice and dry, I still have some from this very video years later. The taste does decline, though, after about a year. I found about 3 months dry, they tasted the best, then they were the same for another 6 months, and after that, the taste got a lot weaker. They were (and still are) never bad, just weak after a while.

Pinch all the yellow in your fingers, and with the other hand, snip off at the base of the yellow flowers. Scrape off the remaining green. However, I'll be willing to bet that the bitterness of the green is a concentrate of all the benefits a dandelion has to offer.
@HiddenThicket
@HiddenThicket 4 года назад
The bitter part of the flower is actually its "poison". It's not beneficial at all. It's a self defense mechanism. I also suspect it's something to do with protecting itself from the sun, because those grown in bright sunlight are much more bitter than those grown in the shade.

Can you pick a bunch of them and save them, dry them and such, and use them that way over the fall and winter? Will the nutritional properties remain once dry?
@HiddenThicket
@HiddenThicket 2 года назад
Yes, you can pick a bunch and dry them. They last for at least a year in an airtight container. I store mine in a washed pickle jar and I thought they were even better. The bitterness goes away on the sepals (the green part of the flower, but not the leaves) if you leave them on the petals, and they smell/taste more like honey than they do at first. Maybe aging is something to experiment with! As for nutrition, I think it's irrelevant in this case so I don't know and have never bothered exploring it.

I was going to at my friends house, but had to leave too early to try it. I might share dis with him!

Should I wash the dandetion first to get rid of dust etc.
@HiddenThicket
@HiddenThicket 2 года назад
If they are dusty, you can if you like. I would be more concerned with chemical pollutants. There are no dust or chemicals on mine, but there are a lot of little bugs that live in the flowers. Let the flowers sit for a half hour or so to let them crawl away. Anything else living in them, stray insects or bacteria, will be killed later by the boiling water.

I heard people make tea from the leaves; is that very bitter as well? Would you just let them dry first?
@HiddenThicket
@HiddenThicket 4 года назад
The leaves don't make very good tea, in my opinion. They're very bitter and don't taste very good. That's just me though. Drying them may make them less bitter, since drying the flowers makes them less bitter (if you don't take the green part off), but I have never tried it. Give it a try and let me know!

I have a big former pasture as a front yard and its filled with dandelions. I am 65 with a bad back but I went out there today and picked as many as I could...lol I pinched off the stems and saw the white latex you spoke of but a few of mine had a brown sticky fluid in them. Is this the false dandelion someone spoke of in the comments ? If not, do u know why some is brown? I only picked larger flowers.
@HiddenThicket
@HiddenThicket 3 года назад
It seems the false dandelion has latex as well, but it's white, too. I am not sure why those ones you found had brown latex! Maybe the plant was dying. I would have just tossed those aside and used the good ones. It seems that the false dandelion and another look-alike (cat's-ear dandelion) are both also edible, so even if you picked the wrong one, you should be just fine. Have a google of Pyrrhopappus carolinianus and Hypochaeris radicata and see if you have any out there!

Poor dear, she apparently doesn't know about scissors.😆😆👍 Awesome awareness video. Dandelions are not weeds! Well, they are, but not really. Dandelions are food. Really delish food. I start in late March and harvest my lawn until they quit coming up. I haven't canned any yet ,but I've definitely thought about it. Dandelion jelly. Dandelion wine. Dandelion greens ,for the adventurous soul , you can even boil the root. It will give your bowels a good scrubbin' ,a scrubbin'.😆👍😁

PFFTTTTTT I know about scissors! I regret that I put off picking this year's flowers by 1 day because it was about to rain, then the next day was sunny and my uncle mowed them all down >:C I will have to hope they come back again soon. Clean dandelions are a bit hard to come by where I am without trespassing.
