You would only use a fruity send if you want to the original dry signal (pre-channel effects) to an auxilary. I guess it depends where on the chanel you place it but for example you could add an EQ and compressor to the sound then send the signal after that before adding another reverb and delay. That way you have more control over what effects are applied to the signal your 'sending' out.

I can't recall but I'm sure it was just my typical chord writing pad made using DIVA. Basically a saw tooth or two, detuned, bit of saturation then a Low Pass Filter to remove some of those higher harmonics until it sounds 'soft'
