In this video I show you how you can get started with Cricut cuting machines, including Cricut Maker, and Cricut Explore Air 2.
This video will get you started making decals you can use as a source of side income, or even to start a new business! You will learn about the Cricut machines, where they are available, things you need to know about upkeep and blades, cutting mats you will need, and different kinds of adhesive vinyl you can use to make any kind of decal.
I also show some different tools you will need to get started, and some of my favorite decals I make and sell to give you some ideas to get started!
Below are some links to these machines and items used in this video!

Loved this video! I just got a Cricut for Christmas and I’m trying to learn all there is to learn! I’m a bit confused from other videos, could you explain what the difference in Iron On and Vinyl is? I thought they were the same but the cricut has a setting for both! Lol
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 3 года назад
Hi thank you! Iron-on material is used for placing decals on surfaces, such as T-shirts, using an iron or heat press. You would cut most iron on material backward, or mirrored. Vinyl, or adhesive vinyl, would be used for car decals or wall decals, mug decals, etc. You can get it in removable or permanent but it is placed directly on the surface either by just sticking it on or by using transfer tape to transfer the whole decal to a surface. Hope that helps!

Thanks for sharing. I bought my Cricut Maker last year as an upgrade to my Cricut Explore Air. I am now retired so planning some projects for the cricut maker. Do you think that the vinyl would stick onto wax fabric or waterproof fabric. A friend has asked if I could make some pouches with his business name on them.

@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 2 года назад
Hi...there are two ways to fix this. It depends on which program you use. In Design Space I use the offset feature to thicken up fonts. I type out the word first. Then select offset, then I change the thickness to anywhere from 0.005 to 0.01. You may have to test different thicknesses to see what looks good, but this is a game changer for thin fonts. The other option is in Inkscape. Let me know if you need more info on that. Hope that helps!

How you do it when you have more than one color???? How do you put them in the correct place when we have to transfer it over? How do you guide yourself?
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 4 года назад
Hi! You can definitely layer vinyl of different colors. I start with the largest or top color layer (it depends on the decal), cut it out, weed, apply transfer tape, remove the vinyl backing. Cut out the next color, weed, and position the transfer tape with the first layer over the second cut, pick up the second layer vinyl and remove that vinyl backing. Then next color layer and so on. Then you can place it all at one time, or if making decals, leave the last layer backing on. Hope that makes sense I will post a video on that process.👍🏻

Hi! I really do like both. There are pros and cons to both ... I like how Cricut brand has a plastic backing and doesn’t tear and stick on the mats, but I like that Oracal has Permanent Vinyl that you can get in Matte finish. So I use them based on that mostly.

@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 3 года назад
Hi! Yes that happens it really depends on the combination of transfer tape and vinyl, and also how intricate your design is. I use medium tack transfer tape and sometimes I have problems with the backing but if I opt for strong grip it does better with the backing, but wants to pull off the vinyl when trying to apply a decal on paint. I would try strong grip if you are applying decals to glass or smooth metal, and stick with medium tack if you are making decals for signs and things. Hope that helps!

Sure! After weeding you will need to apply the clear transfer tape over the decal. I then roll over it to burnish everything down. The I trim around to make them look neater, place them in a clear bag to ship. Larger ones I roll up with the vinyl facing out. . No less than a 2" diameter roll. Then I ship the rolls in boxes or the flat ones I put in bubble poly mailers.

Hi! I haven't tried vinyl on that kind of material so I'm not sure how well it sticks,, but you can totally try skipping the transfer tape if the design is really simple. If you have a lot of letters and parts to the decal, it may take you a while to remove and stick each part seperately, so then I would definitely use transfer tape.

Hi! The thing I love most about having the Cricut is being able to make whatever pops into my head. If you like to make purely for the joy then you will enjoy a cutter. I love to make things even if they might be easier to buy lol. I have gotten comments from those who sold theirs because they got frustrated with it and I will say it is a learning experience, but I have had mine for three years and couldn’t imagine not having one. It is a lot especially for the Maker, I think Explore Air 2 is less. But if you love your hobby and keep learning with it, it will be worth it. Hope that helps a bit!

Very nice content. But you should invest in a better camera! Soft focus, strange color.... a new cam would make you look a lot more professional! Just a thought.

do you have to use different blades for different projects?
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 3 года назад
Hi! You would use different blades for thicker materials such as leather or chip board, and also for fabric. For adhesive vinyl I always use the fine point blade.👍🏻

For decals that are meant for a car would you recommend the removable or the permanent vinyl?
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 4 года назад
Hi! For things like window decals and decorative decals I use temporary personally. I wouldn’t use permanent for decorative decals I would want to remove later on my own personal car. But for more permanent decals, like trailer numbers, racing stripes, or things that will probably stay for a long time I’d use permanent. If selling online I go with permanent (I think that’s what most decals are) and just put a note in the description that the vinyl is permanent so the customers know. Hope that helps!! 👍🏼

What's the difference between permanent vinyl and removable? What would use for both types?
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 3 года назад
Hi! Permanent is suppose to last much longer than removable vinyl, and harder to peel off after a couple days. Permanent al so leaves a residue when removed. Removable adheres really well but can be removed easily with no residue left on the surface. I use temp when I am making window decals for my car or seasonal sticker decor for windows and doors. You would use permanent for say, signs, mailbox numbers, business signs, and things you would not be removing.

Should the font color in design space match the vinyl color or it doesn’t matter because it’ll be the vinyl color anyway? Thx
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 2 года назад
Hi! It doesn't matter at all...I like to use the same colors when I am doing several different colors, just to help keep track of which color to place on the mat. But mostly I disregard the color of the text in Design Space if I am doing one color.

Hi! and thanks for your knowledge! I would like to ask you and if you can guide me, how to get the prices of the cuts? Thank you so much !
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 4 года назад
Hi! It all depends on the material cost for me. I add up the cost of materials including transfer tape, vinyl, and packaging and triple that. So if i make a 6x6 decal and vinyl costs $1.00 per foot, transfer cost the same, and packaging costs say 50 cents then I have about $1.00 in a decal material cost. I would make the price no less than $3, and probably more like $4-$5 depending on how complex the image is. But that’s just me and where I start when pricing stuff! Hope that helps!!

So do you suggest 631 vinyl for the decals or do you use 651? Thanks for all you informative tutorials, they are so helpful!
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 4 года назад
If you are doing signs I would go with 651. The 631 is great and I use it a lot and it’s super easy to remove from paint, walls, glass etc. The permanent is harder to remove than 631 so only use it if planning on keeping it a while. If you sell decals I would give both options to the customer. Hope that helps!

hi! my sister and i have just ordered the explore air 2 to make some decals and stickers with! could you explain what the purpose of the transfer tape is please? we aren't sure what it does :) thanks!
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 4 года назад
Of course! Transfer tape is applied over the decal after removing all the parts you don’t want to keep. The tape keeps all the parts in tact when you remove the backing when you get ready to apply a decal. Once the decal is placed on the surface you can remove the transfer by rolling and pulling it off the decal. It really just is a means of transferring the entire decal while keeping everything in place if that makes sense?☺️ Hope that helps!

How do you figure out how much to sell your products for and how do you know how much to add for shipping?
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 4 года назад
Hi! I usually take the cost of materials and triple it to start, then adjust a bit if I need to. I have an idea of what I want out of each sign and try to keep it reasonable and comparable to other prices. That seems to work for me! I only ship thru Etsy and Etsy does the work in figuring shipping. They figure shipping for the buyers and I purchase shipping labels thru Etsy ...it’s cheaper than at the counter. If paying at the post office you can get an idea of how much it will cost thru their online shipping rates. Hope that helps!

Can you please give more information about the blades? Like when would you use each degree blade?
@AppalachianHomeCo
@AppalachianHomeCo 4 года назад
Sure! I use the 30 deg (fine cut)for most thin materials like paper, HTV and adhesive vinyl. The 45 degree you can use for the same but it will cut thicker vinyls and 2-4mil stencil materials. For 6mil stencils and thicker materials like cork boards and such you can use the deep cut (60 degree) blade. If you go into your material list where you select your material (just before cutting) you will find what each material specifies, fine cut or deep cut. Hope that helps!
